The Virginian is mistaken for a man named Boss Cooper. When asked to describe Cooper, John Smith stated that he "hired out to cattlemen, who paid him to get rid of rustlers, by laying wait and shooting them down." From this description, Boss Cooper could have been based loosely on Tom Horn.
This is the only episode from the entire nine seasons of The Virginian which was never shown in the UK, where the series was broadcast by the BBC.
