(1964)

John McIntire: Christopher Hale

Quotes

  • Christopher Hale : You can sleep in the supply wagon there and you can take your meals with us.

Nancy Styles : You'll pay for this stupidity.

Christopher Hale : Oh, yes. And, ah, speaking of paying, with no money, you'll be expected to do your share of the workload in exchange for your passage.

Nancy Styles : I WILL NOT!

Christopher Hale : It was a rule that Frank Styles made himself.

Nancy Styles : I WILL NOT WORK!

    Christopher Hale : We'll see.

  • Christopher Hale : I don't care if she's the Royal Crown Princess of England. I would not let Frank Styles himself talk to me the way she did.

  • Christopher Hale : Well, Barney, all I'm trying to do is make sure she's worthy of your affection, that's all.

Barnaby West : No, it isn't all. You're doing everything you can to make her look bad. Well, it isn't going to work. We're going to get married anyway.

Christopher Hale : No, you're not Not now.

Christopher Hale : What right have you got to stop me? You're not my father.

Christopher Hale : I'm responsible for you.

Barnaby West : Not any more you're not. Not any more.

  • Bill Hawks : Looks like Barney didn't take my advice. Guess he figures she's changed.

Christopher Hale : Is that the way you figure?

Bill Hawks : Nope. The switch was too quick.

Christopher Hale : Yup. I'm afraid there's a selfish reason behind every thing that young lady does.

  • Christopher Hale : You think I'm a tyrant too?

Barnaby West : It doesn't seem to be bothering any of you that she hasn't had one single thing to eat all day.

Christopher Hale : She hasn't done anything to earn it either.

Barnaby West : Well, she's just a girl, Mr Chris.

Christopher Hale : Is there any reason I should take orders from her?

Barnaby West : There must be some other way to handle her. It's cruel to starve her like this.

Christopher Hale : I'd say she was starving herself, wouldn't you?

  • Christopher Hale : Barney knew enough about this stuff not to ride into something like that.

Bill Hawks : I know how you feel., Chris. He was just like a son to me too.

Christopher Hale : My son was just about Barney's age when he killed. I was 200 miles away when my family was massacred. I couldn't have prevented that. But, Barney, I could have stopped him.

Bill Hawks : No, you couldn't. You tell him Nancy was using him as a quick way to get her to Denver? You did all you could. You want to blame somebody, blame that selfish, little female BRAT.

  • Christopher Hale : [Voiceover]  From the time the train moved out of St Joseph, Missouri, and sliced off the top corner of Kansas, to beat a long, flat trail across Nebraska, to the fork of the Platt River, and even after we'd swung out along the South Platt route, an had nearly reached the border of Colorado, Nancy kept pretty much to herself.

  • Christopher Hale : Seems to be me she's a little headstrong. I think somebody should keep an eye on her, see that she doesn't do anything foolish. I was kinda hoping I could depend on you to do that. 'Cause if you'd rather not...

Barnaby West : Oh, no, no, no. I'd be glad to. Well, I mean, anything you say, Mr Chris. Well, after al you are the wagon master. Well, he does give the orders, doesn't he? Well, anyway, I bet she's not a day over eighteen.

  • Christopher Hale : You'll think differently in the morning. Brothers and sisters always fight but they always make up.
