Patience Miller's husband is killed by the Comanche on the wagon train on their way to teach at a school for the Arapaho. They along with daughter Prudence are Quakers. Flint drops Patience and Prudence at the school. Mr. Wise decides to stay when he learns the women are alone. Patience is confronted immediately by Chief Spotted Horse and braves but they back off when they see her red hair calling her a medicine woman. She uses their beliefs about her along with the desires of Chief North Star's son Evening Star to convince the Arapaho to send their children to school. Evening Star becomes a prized pupil but Patience becomes concerned when Evening Star talks about the Chiefs deciding they should attack the Comanche - their traditional enemy. Patience pleads with the Arapaho tribal council to cancel the attack which they do. However, shortly afterwards, Evening Star is killed by the Comanche. The Arapaho take the son of Comanche Chief Dark Eagle prisoner to be executed in return. Patience with the aid of Evening Star's mother release and return the son with the request that the two tribes meet in peace. In the end Chief North Star decides they can each learn from each other.
