People on the train are hungry and one of the men shoots a buffalo against the wishes of Adams who has an agreement with the local Chief, White Eagle. Adams forces the man to bury the buffalo and puts him in chains. Flint returns with permission to kill five buffalo from White Eagle. However, Adams against the advise of Flint keeps the man in chains. Flint quits the train and finds a job as Sheriff in the nearby Tent City owned by Will Hardisty. One of White Eagle's braves see the buffalo buried and reports it to White Eagle. White Eagle understands Adams did not break their treaty but wants the man to punish by death but Hawks refuses. A second man from Tent City kills a deer and is arrested by Flint. White Eagle confronts the Major and Hardisty wanting the two men so he can punish them. Flint suggests he and White Eagle settle the argument the Indian way - a fight to the death.
