- Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] In those trying years of the Depression the achievements of any Walton family member were a source of pride for all of us. But the visit to our home of an extraordinary young man gave us all a new, and perhaps more balanced perspective in our views toward academic brilliance. It happened on a weekend when we were getting ready for a church bazaar.
- John-Boy Walton: Lyle's gonna help me out with my physics this weekend.
- The Grandfather: Oh is that so? I didn't know you took physics John-Boy.
- John-Boy Walton: Oh yes.
- The Grandfather: The only physics I ever took was stewed prunes!
- [laughs uproariously]
- Lyle Thomason: They demonstrate a display fix nitrogen with fertilizer Most of the fertilizer comes from Chile.
- Mary Ellen Walton: I bet. Is that why you came to the Garden just to talk about manure
- Lyle Thomason: There's an astronautics exhibits. Since they found Pluto in in 1930 some astronomers thinks that there's more planets out there.
- Mary Ellen Walton: Well if they keep searching maybe they'll find lives in other planets.
- Lyle Thomason: They don't search them visually through mathematical calculations. Hey why did you get me all wet with with hose from the water , Mary
- Mary Ellen Walton: Because I felt like it.
- Lyle Thomason: But I'm all wet.
- Mary Ellen Walton: Yes , the evidence would indicate that.
- Lyle Thomason: Well I guess now I need to change dry clothes.
- Mary Ellen Walton: That would be a great idea.
