Saw this one today. It was well-done and not too bad, but it was not enjoyable to watch.
The main plot was the sudden return of Ashley Longworth, Junior, who had been most attracted to Erin when he visited a year ago. His return came at 3 a.m. tossing pebbles on the bedroom window of Erin--and Elizabeth and Serina--who happily got dressed and left to visit him immediately.
He wanted to propose, and did so right away. Now they had known each other for just a few days on his one earlier visit--unless I missed something, and supposedly exchanged a few letters. He had seemed just right for Erin before, but wasn't able to stay long enough to really know her because he was already in the Navy, and was only on leave.
Here, he had just a couple of weeks before going overseas, and wanted to visit the justice of the peace later that same day. Erin convinced him to wait for Saturday of that week and we heard nothing more of any plans.
To me, this seemed like a juvenile view of romance. The dashing young sailor whisks her away and they get married right away. It seemed obvious that they had not known each other nearly well enough to get married and had not even talked about plans for their future. These things are usually considered important in the real world, just not in TV, at least, not often enough.
Erin's parents were distressed at this sudden marriage to someone they barely knew (Olivia had not yet met him until that day). But they were going to go along with it because Erin was old enough. At the family supper table, Ashley was invited to say the blessing and he stopped without speaking, then, suddenly excused himself and left the house.
Outside, he told Erin that he had become an atheist, but he refused to discuss the matter with her. Later, he said he planned to never again set foot inside a church.
Erin at first was still intent on marrying him, but was distressed at the thought that since he changed so much in the past year (he used to be a churchgoing Baptist, like Erin) in ways beyond religion, she wondered how much else had changed. Ashley got upset at just discussing things and called off the wedding, which naturally caused all kinds of stress to Erin.
We later got to understand some element of what drove Ashley away from God, but the marriage was still canceled as the young couple, apparently, came to understand they needed to get to know each other better. Since they couldn't do it until Ashley came back from the war, their relationship was put on hold.
The minor plot was Serina tagging after Elizabeth too often until Elizabeth exploded, hurting her feelings, and, of course, like any sisters, or sister-brother conflict, was later resolved when they spoke while calmer.
