A must-see for fans of old westerns.

While this live television episode is far from perfect (which I'll get to in a bit), it's a must-see for western fans and is currently available on YouTube.

The show is hosted, as usual, by Dave Garroway and he spends it interviewing a variety of western stars, directors and stunt men. It's obviously done to help promote many of the network's western shows (which were super common back in 1958) but also gives you a chance to see the likes of John Ford, Gene Autry, John Wayne and many others talking somewhat off the cuff about westerns.

So what didn't I like about the show? Well, they feature a lot of western movie stars and the like but many are never mentioned, so it's far from comprehensive. Roy Rogers, Tim McCoy, Hopalong Cassidy and dozens of others aren't included among the guests...though the show does show clips and talks about many seminal actors, such as William S. Hart and Tom Mix. In other words, it gives a lot of history though it is spotty. As for why Autry is included and other B-movie stars aren't is probably because of the filming location...Autry's Melody Ranch where quite a few TV westerns were made.

I did enjoy the interviews (though it was obvious some of the folks weren't all that comfortable without cue cards), loved seeing how they did various stunts and thought it was a lovely look at westerns...albeit an imperfect one.

NBC Live Performance at Melody Ranch June 1958

If you like Westerns this compendium is for you. One must follow 1958 TV Production rules.

It was a "live" performance with cue cards. Production vales were top of the line for the period. Looks dated now; but tv and theater majors will appreciate the no take effort.

Cowboy Singing Star Gene Autry's Melody once was the setting for many cowboy movies by Monogram, Supreme, Flying A (gene autry productions) and many other Poverty Row movies. In 1962 the whole place burnt to the ground. It took out historical railroad rolling stock, buildings, amusements and personal collections that will not be replaced.

This program presented clips the 1903 Great Train Robbery interview with Bronco Billy Anderson. Then later a live vignette with Gary Cooper,Maria Schell, and Carl Swenson in The Hanging Tree. Filmed in Washington State.

There were interviews with cowboy stars, directors, producers, stunt men and a Chickasaw sharp shooter. Wow. Must see to believe.

Great Western Documentary
hines-20001 October 2021
Great to see many of the stars of the Westerns staged on Gene Autry's Melody Ranch. After Autry and Chill Wills kicked it off, the opening was quite fitting with Walter Brennan, Gabby Hayes and Gilbert M. 'Broncho Billy' Anderson in a crooked poker game. The scenes with John 'Duke' Wayne, Pappy Ford and and Ward Bond were priceless. Also, Rodd Redwing put on a spectacular shooting clinic with Annie Oakley (Gail Davis) herself holding the target. Great to see a cameo by the Lone Ranger himself, Clayton Moore and sidekick Jay Silverheels. My only complaint is the the greatest stuntman ever, Yakima Canutt did not get a mention.
