- In Mr Collins' math class, Kevin has been getting by on a 'respectable C-average. However, when he notes that Paul has gotten an A- along with a comment that he did a good job, this causes Kevin to reassess his work.
Kevin eventually works his way up to a 'B' on his next paper, though in discussing his grades with Mr Collins in private, Mr Collins tells Kevin that he believes he can help him get an 'A' on the upcoming mid-term exam in 2 weeks.
Kevin is at first reluctant, but agrees. Soon, he is enjoying the after-school sessions with Mr Collins, and feels that he may very well succeed in getting a better grade on the mid-term...until one day he finds the classroom door locked. Kevin then finds Mr Collins in the parking lot, who apologizes that he will not be able to help Kevin over the next couple of days, but will return in time to give the mid-term exam.
Kevin feels this to be a harsh brush-off, and on the day of the mid-term, he writes in bogus answers on his exam, and hands it in to Mr Collins personally, before leaving. After quickly looking over the failed test, Mr Collins calls after him, but Kevin does not look back.
Kevin spends the weekend first feeling good about what he did, but on Monday, he goes by the Teacher's Lounge to talk to Mr Collins...only to be told that Mr Collins passed away that morning from a heart condition. It now becomes clear to Kevin just why Mr Collins did not finish his lessons, and he is beside himself with misery.
Mr Diperna assumes substitute teaching duties for Mr Collins' math class, and soon calls Kevin to the classroom after school. Mr Diperna then explains that Mr Collins had graded all the student's mid-term exams, but Kevin's is missing. However, included in the stack of exams, Mr Collins included a non-signed exam with Kevin's name on it.
Mr Diperna gives Kevin 50 minutes to fill out the form, and Kevin remembers the help that Mr Collins gave him, but relies solely on his own knowledge. When he finally turns the paper in to Mr Diperna, he confidently claims that it doesn't need to be graded...and that it's an 'A' paper.
As Kevin then turns to walk out of the classroom, he gets a small vision in his head of Mr Collins, calling after him with a smile on his face, before the shot fades to an empty desk, and a picture in memoriam of Mr Collins.
