Warning: Spoilers
Wycliffe is under pressure after a murder trial collapses. His acting Detective Sergeant Noble failed to follow proper procedures.

Interrogating a suspect in the back of a police car, writing incriminating information down in a police notebook and no signing it.

At court Wycliffe admits that the suspect should had been questioned at a police station, where the interview could be recorded and the suspect has a chance of having a lawyer present.

Wycliffe feels like an old dog who cannot learn new tricks'. Even his kids are getting older and doing their own thing nowadays.

He still has experience but realises that he needs to be more careful. Something DI Lane learns when she has to reopen an old case but it goes nowhere.

As for the collapsed trial. Th young thug who was released gets mowed down by the victim's father later on.

It is one of these cynical episodes designed to make the viewers angry at the state of the criminal justice system. Leaning towards getting the accused off technicalities. The poor police getting bogged down by paperwork.

It does transpire that Noble was probably a poor policeman and too lazy to do proper paperwork.
