The presentation of the character Virgil Incanto went through several permutations, initially conceived as a creepy Phantom-of-the-Opera-like recluse and as a butcher who would be able to cut the fat from his victims before the final fairly normal-looking version was decided upon.
The substance secreted by Virgil Incanto was mainly a veterinary product called J-Lube mixed with some food products to make it essentially edible, albeit not very pleasant.
This features the first appearance of Steve Kiziak, David Duchovny's stunt double. Kiziak was discovered in true Hollywood fashion coming out of a Starbucks by locations manager Louisa Gradnitzer who was immediately struck by Kiziak's similarity to Duchovny both in looks and gait. She shouted after him that she needed to talk to him. Kiziak had just moved to Vancouver looking for work as an electrician's apprentice.
2shy was apparently supposed to air earlier in the season. 2Shy takes place in late August, and Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose (1995) (aired earlier) is supposed to take place sometime in September.
The character Virgil Incanto uses Italian poetry to lure his victims. Italian poetry, like Dante Alighieri's "Inferno," is broken in cantos. Also in "The Inferno," Dante's guide is the poet Virgil.
