Warning: Spoilers
To this date I still hate Shane Vendrell. This is still as shocking now as it was when I first watched it when it aired. Terrific episode that punches you in the stomach.

The best televised drama period
juancdominguez1 August 2006
I will dispense with bombast or unnecessary effusive superlatives and simply state that to this day, never has a televised program of any genre captivated me to this extent. The Shield is one of those shows that we will still discuss decades from now, and use as a de rigeur benchmark to categorize and qualify anything even remotely similar. From the pilot episode, to the gut wrenching season five quasi-finale, the writing, its characters and genius story lines will engross you like nothing else on the tube. Hats off to Shawn Ryan for making the idiot box, less idiotic, and pulling together a near perfect ensemble of brilliant actors. There is no one I would change, from the merest walk on and extra, to the key cast. If Walter Goggins, Jay Karnes & David Rees Snell would all retire to live as hermits on the Aelutian islands, never to apear in public again, their record as actors would still surpass that of 98% of their peers just for their stint on The Shield. I sincerely hope that there are more seasons than five, 12 to 15 should do it, then again maybe not.

Have you ever "felt" a television show?
KimV7824 March 2006
I will not spoil this episode or this season for you. This is just a note from one fan to hopefully another! I started watching this show in it's third season, and I had a lot of fun catching up on the first and second seasons while I waited for the fourth, I urge you to do the same. Rent them one at a time if you have to, but please start with season one, episode one.

Fans of this show have different opinions on how we feel about it's characters, it's plot-lines, it's recent direction. One thing that many of us agree on is that we never believed that a television show could reach out and grab you this way, until The Shield.

The Shield is not for the faint of heart, and don't let them kid you, it is not just a cop drama, it's something else. There aren't many television shows, or movies, or actors that I have a respect for, as in they really spoke to me and made me feel something. The Color Purple is one movie that has, just as an example. And everything about this show gives me that feeling, I cannot tell that anybody is acting and for that hour, I am lost. You cannot reach me.

I had to sit down and write a few lines about the show that I and so many others love (also speaking for my sister and b/f) especially after this episode. I watched it Tuesday night, and tonight again, and for the last 20 minutes, the second time I watched it, I shook...again. I sat and shook for 20 minutes, and when the credits rolled, I had to get up and take a walk.

I might be ashamed to admit this, had it ever happened before, but I'd rather look at it as a compliment to everyone involved with this show.

"Shane? Shane!"

Yeah. I don't need to say nothing more.

He was my favorite since the first season. He didn't deserve none of it. He was the best.

Props to Kenny Johnson for giving life to Lem, what an amazing and underrated actor.

Some of the best acting you'll ever witness.
RJBrez23 October 2020
I'll keep this simple. The actors in this episode, especially Walton Goggins, are incredible. No spoilers, but it's one of the best episodes of television I've ever watched. Every time I watch I'm more blown away by it. 10/10

When I was a teenager I watched this series every now and then but I was bad at the time to watch the series: thanks to streaming services I watched the first season about half a year ago and thought it was at least above average series. Now I have looked at two week periods seasons 2-5 and now I have come to the conclusion that this is one of the best ever series. There are a lot of different characters in this series and they are all extremely believable, everyone plays the series as if it were reality TV. The shooting style of the series where the cameras swaying hanging around to the actors and the locations and events brings a series that realism that is still not often seen. The script is in a class of its own, the plots are skillfully constructed, the drama is high quality, the dialogue witty. Above all, the series tells about choices and their consequences and makes the viewer think about right and wrong. Much more than just a series of cops.

Caesar

Warning: Spoilers
I don't even know where to begin. I can't believe Shane killed Lem. I had it spoiled for me and I still gasped out loud when it happened. I can't believe he used a grenade to pin it on the El Salvadorians.

This is one of those times when a TV episode has left me in a funk. Experiences like these are few and far between, but spectacular when you find them. The acting and writing have come together to create a masterpiece.

This doesn't even feel real. Seeing Lem's burned and battered body in the car literally felt like a nightmare. My heart raced through the last half hour. Seeing Shane's breakdown after he set off the bomb was just so screwed up. I was choking up a little myself.

Billings' Caesar reference near the start of the episode may have been foreshadowing. When you examine every layer, who is truly at fault for Lem's death? Shane is an obvious answer, but beyond that - Aceveda planted the seed of doubt in the strike team, Kavanaugh launched the investigation to begin with, and Emolia was the one who gave Lem up. Shane is the show's "Brutus." While he was the one to deal the killing blow, perhaps the true killer was everyone behind it.

No more words for this one. Bravo. 10/10.

Most suspenseful and depressing episode.
richardharold25 January 2022
Oh my goodness.

This episode was the perfect ending to the perfect season.

Everything come together, all the character & plot.

This is the saddest episode I ever saw.

I cried so much.

The characters & acting is the best.

I can't even think what to say from this episode because it was so amazing. All this season is a 10/10.

Still shocking and unpredictable after all these years
dierregi18 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm watching this show now for the first time and it's definitely one of the best cops show ever. I am no expert of criminality in LA, but they do an excellent job in showing what a desperate situation it may be for a cop facing unsustainable odds.

When cops are underpaid and overworked, risking their lives every day for the ungrateful, resentful citizen, corruption is just behind the corner.

Vic and his team are not justifiable, but certainly I can understand why they do what they do. The problem is, once they start to slide they can just go deeper, as proved by the heartbreaking Lem's story. Lem was my favourite character, I wanted something better for him.

I'm now eager to see Kavanaugh's downfall. He's a master manipulator and my top disliked character. I totally hated him when he asked Vic if he was happy, when he himself is the cause of Lem's demise with his irrational hatred for the Strike Team, his illegal dealings with criminal Antwon and his tunnel-vision pursuit.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode of 'THE SHIELD' was one of the best I've ever seen. I sat through each scene with a sick feeling in my stomach.

Honestly, I've seen better things from these writers, but at the moment Shane kills poor defenseless Lem...I lost it. My heart dropped, my stomach ached...it was horrible, but so amazing at the same time.

I cannot wait for next season! The repercussions of Shanes evil doing should make for a perfect season six.

We can't underestimate Dutch either...he is one of the best Detectives in the world...people just don't realize it. He'll find out about Shane hopefully around the same time Vic and Ronny do...

Never, in my whole life, have I been this wrecked by a TV show
GhostOfPerdition6431 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
(SPOILERS) The Shield is, far and away, the most engaging, emotional, addictive television show I have ever seen. The characters are brilliantly drawn and have been masterfully developed throughout the last 5 seasons. We have watched the Strike Team and those around them grow, we've gotten to know them, better than any other show I've ever watched. That level of involvement made 'Postpartum' especially devastating. We've always known Shane was a selfish dimwit who would look out for himself when the heat was on, but we never believed that he would stoop so low as to murder one of his best friends. Lem was not completely innocent, he made the same choices as the rest of the team, but he was the only one with a clear moral compass and most definitely did not deserve this. Shane must now reap the windfall of his actions, with Vic on a war path that is going to lead straight back to him. Walt Goggins and Kenny Johnson deserve Emmys for that one scene alone. January 2007 cannot get here fast enough.

Warning: Spoilers
Wow,I kind of suspected it to end this way for Lem.Especially when him and Shane were alone,The mood of the show kinda gave it a way,but when it happened ,i was still in disbelief i was amazed at how fine these actors are .I'll never forget the look on Kenny Johnsons face when the smoke settled and he just stared at Walt Goggins.I'll have this scene stuck in my head for awhile.Shane using a grenade to do it and realizing Lem not going right away is going to chew him up.This show has to have the most talented actors, writers and crew around. The way they take the reality approach at filming is awesome. It appears season 6 is going start off as intense as ever, and i cannot wait to see where it goes!

Total agreement with KimV78
desertskies15 April 2006
I have viewed all but ONE episode of The Shield. I simply forgot it was a Tuesday night and Shield was on (season one).

From the first promos that had Vic muttering "Good cop and bad cop have left for the day. I'm a different kind of cop.", I knew I was ready for something different in a police drama other than the likes of Adam 12 or Dragnet.

Granted, it's a stretch comparing Vic Mackey to Officer's Malloy and Reed from Adam 12 or Friday and Gannon from Dragnet, but the style of the story lines are diametrically different. The closest police series would be NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues or maybe Police Story.

Sheriff Andy Taylor? Get out!

To avoid a "spoiler", I will say that the way the last season finale ended, was not the way I saw it coming for many reasons. Much the same way that Six Feet Under ended its series run. I had an idea, but did not see it the way the writers did. The writers won.

I will be purchasing the box set of The Shield. All 5.1 seasons. I have to see which episode I missed. I doubt it will have any impact on my opinion of the series.

The ensemble, the writing and the camera shots and movement in no way hurts it. It actually adds to it.

Thanks F/X for picking it up.

Lem
seod199921 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
In a soap opera, he would be back next season as a twin brother or something like that. Lem dead....it is enough to make you stop watching the show. I almost puked when I saw Lem die. It was like loosing my own partner. Lem was the innocent one, the moral conscience of the team. Hell, of the show. He was the one always trying to do a good thing, until the end. He was trying to help the little kid who cut his hand. He was the guy who never had anyone else. He always wanted to do the right thing. You know who should have died? Kavanaugh. I wanted to see Vic give one good kick to his face in that final fight scene. Make the man bleed. But, the show can only go so far. I think it will take nine months for me to decide if I want to watch the show next season. The show is on the downhill now. THey have jumped the shark.

I have followed this season very closely. I waited all week to see the final episode, that was all I talked about all day. I must tell you I was very disappointed in the final episode. It wasn't as intense as other episodes. You still never really said who Danny's child's father was. I would like to know when the next season will start. I love Michael. He is such a great actor. I would like to see Vic and Danny get together. I would also like Vic to really have it out with Kavanaugh, I don't like him. Someone needs to put him in his place and Vic is the only person who can. I hope there will be a new addition to the team. I'm not sure a new person could be trusted with all the teams secrets.
