Good detective series
rockhurstobrecht30 October 2015
Cool male Italian detective, Soneri, with likable goofy sidekick and good looking girlfriends. Stories in the series are interesting and easy to follow. English subtitling is so good that this viewer and his spouse found the dialogue easier to follow than many stories in English, for example, in the Inspector Lewis series.

The hero's constant cigar smoking seemed phony when first encountered but we got used to it. The Russian girlfriend became tiresomely predictable after a while but the series editors found a way of sending her home and providing Soneri with a new love interest.

Good cinematography. Fun to experience Italy.

We like the series. Hope to eventually see all available episodes.

Subbtle and Moody, Funny and Cunning

Far more intelligent than any of the popular detective shows out of the USA, this is a fantastic series set in the town of Ferrara in the Po River Valley, famous for its fog and rain. One of the great things is you rarely see a sunny day in this series. The intelligence and dry humor of the detective, the affectionate and comical relationship with his assistant, the romance with the stunningly beautiful blond Italian speaking Russian attorney, the character who plays the coroner. This all may be too subtle for the other reviewer, but the character and plot alone place this series up with Morse.

Each episode is pretty ingenious, raising both moral issues and the perennial issue of the detectives stubborn insistence on getting to the truth above all else....

Not too bad, but definitely not good enough

Warning: Spoilers
what we got here is a tired looking middle aged Italian inspector, a loner who thought his wife was in love with him before she died in some mysterious problem during pregnancy, but later in the 2nd episode turned out that's not the case. this cigar chain-smoking (trying so hard to give the viewers a look so aloof, deep, well thoughtful?) guy was not an energetic person and his skill of suppressing the culprits when he tried to catch them right on the spot were so lame and so laughable even he was the only person who held the gun aiming at the suspects. we saw him been kicked on the tugboat by a suspect when he held a gun in the 1st episode, then we saw he lost his gun again and been kicked viciously by the suspect in the parking garage. his weak self-defense skills were such a disgusting image that only made me wonder how this guy could become an inspector. by his brain? yeah, maybe. this series is a very slow going drama series, the only interesting part is that he always got a soft spot for the victims and he himself is also a romantic fool. the 3rd episode's screenplay was about a murder case of five women from the catholic school, the culprit is a female lawyer who weirdly connected with this detective's lover. there's no way that this two women would mixed up together but it did. the final scene was this lame detective threw down his gun and begged for the mercy of his lover's life. he was facing the kidnapper/murderer, while there were at least two or three cops aiming their guns behind the murderer. the scene was so disgustingly stupid. then we saw when the episode came to an end, the guy accompanied his lover to visit her mother in Russia, the jet took off and the subtitles showed that the captain announced they were on a boeing 747, yet the plane was obviously a mcdonald douglas aircraft.

this 'fog and crimes' is just an okay but also very lame detective TV series, only a little bit better than what the MHz international channel is replaying now: the most boring 'Don Matteo', a catholic priest ridiculously involved in lot of murder cases. Italian TV drama series are simply far inferior to those drama series in the same genre out of Scandinavian countries, because the main characters are always too lame to be likable, and also got a sidekick who was better than what we saw a clown-like jerk policeman in 'Detective Montalbano (Il commissario Montalbano) 1999-2008'.

The Series was doomed from the start.

The writers of this series broke two GOLDEN RULES early on. Rule #1 Don't force the viewer to start to dislike the main character.

Luca Barbareschi'S treats his girlfriend, Natasha Stefanenko like crap. By doing so he pushes her away. You keep yelling at him to stop acting like a jerk and start treating her nicely. She is in love with him and he can't see it.

Rule #2 Don't have the girlfriend of the main character sleep with a total scum bag. I thought her character was smarter than being taken in by this dope head. Why was she even talking to this low life?

From that point on I never cared what happened to either character.

Fortunately the series was canceled.
