According the David X. Cohen in the DVD commentary, the reason that Hermes is eating popcorn out of a jai-alai scoop is because of a scene that was cut out. In the original script, the worms inside Fry needed metal to build their city so Fry developed a craving for eating silverware. The Planet Express office ran out of silverware so they were forced to eat with jai-alai scoops.
This is the first episode to feature Fry playing the holophoner. Throughout the series, the holophoner only makes appearances in episodes centered around Fry's love for Leela.
The writing in the alien alphabet on the side of the tanker reads Human Milk.
Peter Avanzino has stated that episodes with challenging new scenes to draw are his favorites. In particular he notes that he thinks this episode is fun because "It has microscopic characters inside a human body, a 3-D colonoscopy, a sword fight, a holophoner sequence (involving otters and characters dancing on Saturn's rings), some sweet sweet lovemaking, and a space-truck stop".
Leela's apartment number is 1I (Leela only has one eye). Also, in the show's pilot, she says that her officer code is 1B-DI ("one beady eye").
