Interesting, worth watching.
hfelsh2 August 2006
Unlike the previous reviewer, I found this made-for-TV movie, "Fallen", to be interesting and well done. Though I think it would have worked better as a mini-series, and certainly needs to be fleshed out more, as a 2-hour made-for-TV movie, it certainly wasn't bad. Interesting concepts, and not overly religious (though it is based on "Fallen Angels", of course.) Seeing as it was A.) Free, B.) Made-for-TV, and C.) done without a HUGE budget, it was entertaining and kept me interested. The plot did meander at times, and the main characters weren't built up enough, but this is TV we're talking about. This isn't a big-budget movie, nor were there any "major" stars, though a few of the supporting actors are well-known. Overall, it's worth watching, and if you have TiVo (or your cable company's DVR), recording it to watch later isn't a bad idea.

Strong enough for a show, but made for a movie...
AHinMaine24 July 2006
I liked this movie. Obviously I'm not the only one who thought it seemed more a premiere of TV show. Tina's review of the movie clearly indicates that she thinks this is a new show. It watched like a premiere, it talked like a premiere, it acted like a premiere, and it ended like a premiere. Unfortunately, it's just a book made into a TV movie.

With the exception of Tom Skerritt, the acting was excellent. I've always love Tom's work, but his performance was very overdone and contrived in this movie. It did serve to contrast against the great performances by the other actors. Dialog that could have easily turned into groaning, eye-rolling diatribes by an unnecessarily wordy and preachy script was, instead, smart, funny, and well paced.

They could have gone crazy with the flaming swords and weapons, but subtle and creative foley artwork kept it from becoming some sort of Holy Light Saber battle. The only really annoying thing to me was the dog's voice! Scale it back a bit! I thought it would've been better if they touched it up a bit to sound as if it were more like he were hearing the dog's words in his head.

I hope the networks get enough positive feedback that this does eventually get developed into a regular show.

So is God dead or what?
cherold28 July 2006
I haven't read any of the Fallen books, but I'd like to take a look at one now. The movie was pretty entertaining. Paul Wesley was an unfortunate choice for the lead - he's one of those generic square-jawed types like the leads in the TV series Supernatural - but the rest of the cast was pretty good. The story was interesting and I just loved the dog, who was very funny and really caught the spirit of dogginess.

I'm not sure what to make of the show's bizarre mythology, it's sort of like that Broadway musical about the Wizard of Oz in which the bad witch turns out to be a good, misunderstood witch. Here, the good guy is a Nephilim (who are very bad guys, incidentally, in the TV series Hex) and God has sent angels to earth who are horrible and murder innocent people with abandon.

So I'm curious as to what sort of God we are expected to think put all this in motion. Is God a big picture kind of guy who sets things in motion and then sits back and lets them play out? Or did he have a plan and actually die and now it's up to everyone to manage as best they can? I'd be curious to know if it's as easy to come to the same conclusion by reading the books; perhaps they have a more detailed mythology that would allow for a different interpretation. But as angel movies go, this one doesn't really wind up putting God in a very kindly light (I've no objection to that, I just find it interesting).

I'll also go against one of the other critics here and say I thought Tom Skerrit was the best actor in the movie and also that I liked the huntress angel, who apparently was a guy in the books.

Passable
HallmarkMovieBuff6 August 2007
Depending on how one breaks it down, this movie can be seen as the first two hours of a six-hour miniseries about Nephelim (also spelled Nephilim) who are hunted down and destroyed as abominations (they are half angel, half human) by The Powers, one of The Creator's clans of angels who helped banish Lucifer to Hell and a contingent of his angels (the Fallen) to Earth where they mated with mortals to create the Nephelim.

The first two hours were first shown little over a year before the concluding four hours, so that on IMDb, they are broken into this two-hour movie and a four-hour miniseries. {See "Fallen" (2007).}

On the plus side, the story moves well enough to sustain interest, and most of the actors turn in satisfactory performances, particularly Tom Skerritt as fallen angel Zeke (who appears only in the first two hours), Rick Worthy as Camael, formerly one of The Powers known as The Punisher, now reformed and out to protect Nephelim Aaron Corbett, a.k.a. The Redeemer, played by series lead Paul Wesley.

Nephelim come of age on their eighteenth birthday; and when Aaron, who grew up in a foster home, learns he's a Nephelim, he wants none of this angel stuff, but wants only to live a normal human life. Aaron protests his true nature at every turn, until a fatal showdown with The Powers, and he is forced to decide which path his life will take.

On the down side, the aforementioned fatal showdown involves an angelic battle which utilizes special effects intended to create wonder and awe, but which is rendered less exciting by the effects' familiarity from prior works.

And Elizabeth Lackey as Verchiel, leader of The Powers, who was so good as the lead character Alexandra DeMonacco in the TV series, "Just Cause", is miscast here -- her emotion is clearly false, and her menace is unconvincing. (Due to reasons which are made clear during this movie, she is replaced by Will Yun Lee in the miniseries. Some fans will remember Lee from the TV series, "Witchblade".)

Still, the story holds promise, and I'm hoping it tightens up in the coming four hours.

Addendum: Both the miniseries and the story itself pick up one year later. There are a lot of new characters introduced, and it takes a while to figure out who is who, and whose side each new character is on. (There are at least four different factions involved in the action.) Lovely Fernanda Andrade as Vilma Rodriguez, who was introduced in the movie, reappears in the miniseries and asks the questions that are on viewers' minds designed to clear up various plot points. (Sometimes obscurity doesn't generate mystery, but leads only to confusion.)

Still entertaining
ashleyhailey6 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Not at all like the books! The books were so good! Also the characters were so far beyond good and evil, black and white labels. It was complex and interesting! Although Bryan Cranston did a great job as Lucifer the book version was a way better story line. Book Lucifer was sincerely repentant for the pain he caused and the deaths of his fellow angels and all the deaths and pain since the fall. He was good and bad. It was poetic that his redemption come at the hands of his son. He never asked for it but wanted to earn it and help his son, and earn his trust. The actors did do a good job, but the writers should have stuck to the book. Perhaps they strayed because people can't deal with a grey area. Lucifer bad, god good. Can't handle god good, Lucifer complicated makes mistakes was bad kid angel but doesn't want to be 5000 years later.

Anaylisis on Fallen
Cripsarecool23 July 2006
I thought that Fallen was a great Movie the first time I saw it. It contained a interesting plot that always kept you wanting more. It's a story about a boy named Aaron who is an orphan. He just wants to have a normal life with his family. Aaron is an excellent student and has a specialty for languages. He also has a fascination for angels. One day he notices strange things are happening to him. For example he meets this homeless man who knows too much about him. He can speak a ton of languages he didn't even know, fluently. Now he starts to realize he can do these things for a reason. He has a purpose in his life, but he doesn't want to accept the fact that he has "special" traits and abilities that are very noticeable by "some" people. Now he must find out what is happening and why. Also he must fulfill his purpose on earth. Because earth depends on it.

Very Tedious...
fearfulofspiders18 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The first two-hour part that aired on ABC Family back in the summer of 2006 was so ridiculously cheesy, I didn't think anyone would have the stones to return for future ventures. When split up, there's six-hours worth of story to be covered, but split up into three parts: The Beginning, The Journey, and The Destiny.

PART ONE - THE BEGINNING: First off, the acting is horrendous; whoever does the voice for the dog, Gabriel, is so lame, I cannot believe the director/producers thought it was worthy to be included in the final cut. The main star, Paul Wesley is probably the strongest actor of the bunch, but even he stretches the ham to its utmost potential. Fernanda Andrade is inexperienced and, just like the guy who voiced Gabriel, she brings the believability of the movie to a screeching halt. The story is okay, but the flame-swords (lightsabers, anyone?) seem horribly conceived and well-worth a few revisions in look. All in all, with a budget nearing that of a Sci-Fi Original Movie, the first part of the Fallen mini-series is off to a bad start.

PART TWO - THE JOURNEY: Okay, now if the origin-story aspect of the first part was enough to make the film drag at a snail's pace, then perhaps The Journey would prevail in more excitement, insight into the characters, and at least some better acting. NOPE! Just as incredibly lame as the first part, this "sequel" is full of nonsensical scenes that prove to have no meaning or further depth into the characters; that all we get is "blah, blah, blah" from everyone, and had I not recorded this lame-fest, I would've missed out on what I had fallen asleep through. There's hardly any action to keep one's attention, and no drama or tension to engage us in the story, and a cavalcade of uninteresting characters that make us wonder, "what's the point of all this?"

PART THREE - THE DESTINY: Just like the first two parts, Fallen has done nothing but foreshadow for what's to come in the final installment. Unfortunately, it all leads up to the father of Malcolm in the Middle as a foreseeable Lucifer, and a climactic duel that is anything but cool or enthralling. The first hour is basically equal to tedious pacing as The Journey, only this time there's a bit more action and drama to keep one's focus. For a finale, this is just too weak. There's hardly any conclusion, and no reward for having its audience just sit through six-hours of talk, talk, and more talk.

All in all, there's not one aspect of Fallen I could applaud, except for the fact that it was made with an estimated $7,000,000. The title itself does not live up to anything exciting, and with terrible acting and a pace to match, I highly recommend viewers to steer clear of this garbage, because it is just too boring.

Fallen Angels are Good?!?
ajcutler23 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Fallen Angels are Good?!?

Apparently so. Or they could be. This movie blends mythology and modern day drama into a whirlwind of prophesy fulfillment. "Fallen" brings together faith in the "Creator," explanations as to Angel's walking among humans, and that some Celestial Beings can be as crazy as we are. Hard luck befalls a teen and getting his crush to notice him does little to soften the blow. Magic and destiny plaque the mind of the viewers as they begin to wonder if the Angelic saints, that they know so much about, should really be considered saints at all.

While the movie is a straight to TV movie, it did surprise me in being mythologically accurate and fairly well acted. Not an all-star cast to be sure, but all with obvious talent that I hope to see grow in many future films. This feature combines action, and family/school drama to tell a story that everyone has a destiny; and everyone is unique.

All I have to say....
deranged_Writer24 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
is no. If you, like me, had already read the books behind the movie and had been eagerly awaiting the release, then I bet you were severely disappointed with what you got. If you said this was 'loosely based' on the book, it would be an understatement. The books delved so much more into Aaron's character(which was much more reserved in the book) and the others then the movie did. And why would they want to turned Verchail into a girl? He was a very menacing character when he was actually a he in the book, and there are many actors who could have played the part better.

The one thing I was most disappointed in was the lack of Aaron's transformation. Sniegoski captured it wonderfully in the books, and the movie basically just skimmed over it. Overall, it really makes me wonder if the producers took the time to read the book before they massacred it.

We are ready for this type of show
tina-29424 July 2006
I was attracted to this show due to my profession. I am an Angel Interpreter, and professional psychic. Before you dismiss my posting, let me say I have done this professionally since 1995, and have several publications concerning the Angelic Realm. So, although I would never consider myself an expert, let's say I may have more experience than most viewers concerning Angels. Upon saying that, I have to say this show surprised me.

Fallen was far more accurate (as far as my experiences have been) than many of the "fluffy" Angel shows that have been previously aired. FALLEN not only addresses the issues of "Good and Bad" Angels with more neutrality and balance, but will allow us to view Angels as a part of the collective, yet individual. I like the fact that CHOICE was referenced several times. Choice vs.Victim.

I have to say you have a winner here. I can only foresee a good life for this show, as it seems humanity may be ready for more "truth" and less "fluff". Whomever your writers are, kudos. They may know more than they are even conscious of.

I will recommend this show (more than once) in my newsletter to 9000 people.

Feeling of relief when the DVD finally stopped.
accountcrapper8 February 2011
I watched this a few years ago and I just happened to come to this page and all i can remember about this series is how truly boring it was. I rarely remember bad films. I filter them out like boring days. Oddly though I remember how awfully dull this was. I knew it was going to be cheesy, I mean Angels and Demons and all that, but you never know with these things. You're always hoping it might be The Prophecy or maybe Constantine not great but good fun American Gothic. Fallen is just tedious all the way. Predictable generic characterization with a side order of poor stiff lifeless acting. You know those poor shows with lots of pointless meaningful poses and heartfelt nothings followed intensely lightweight and bad action. I vaguely remember one or two bits where you think oh this looks good and then .... oh no it's not. I force myself to watch it because I rented the series but I remember a feeling of relief when the DVD finally stopped. Like I said I don't remember bad films but it struck me odd that I remembered this feeling by the sense of relief I felt when it was over. Truly a bad one - you should watch it.

Almost perfect
SilverSpiderTM225 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I found the Fallen books almost immediately after they came out in 2004/2005 and fell in love with them immediately. The story has everything anyone can ask for and more. Aaron is a very believable character. He's not the perfect messiah that everyone expects. He has his faults but that's what makes him so perfect for his role of redeemer of the fallen angels. Gabriel, his Labrador retriever, is one of the most dynamic personalities I've ever seen and I am so glad this was shown well in the movie.

My only complaint is, of course, Verchiel. It seems like his entire character got changed. Never mind the completely unnecessary gender change. I thought the actress was weak and completely unfamiliar with the character she was portraying. Verchiel was an excellent villain the books. The movie version was a travesty. The character's untimely death is also baffling. I don't know what they're going to do for the other 4 hours without the main villain who lasted throughout all 4 books of the series.

Aside from that I thought it was amazing. I can't wait for next summer and I really hope ABC Family decides to make this a regular series. I'd especially love to see more books.

Please tell me I wasn't alone
recentinsanity27 January 2008
I'll try not to make this a horribly long winded rant, so please bear with me, but am I the only person who in fact read the books then became excited about the mini series only to cry when watching it? Not because the story is sad, or anything or the sort, but because they've ruined the plot and the beauty of the original? It became so bad that I couldn't even finish the watching it, and would hardy let my mom tell me what had happened. I just couldn't stomach it.

Verchiel is female, which had me blinking confusedly at my TV, and then everything that was to follow was just plain.. Outrageous. I found Aaron as a protagonist to be.. A disappointment, which is maddening, because in the books he is.. Very deep, and wonderful, and so many other beautiful things they didn't take the time to capture in the mini series. Sure.. I know they didn't have the time.. But honestly they could have done a much better job. They could have done him justice, they could have done the books, all the deep, rich and thoughtfully pieced together characters justice, but they just didn't.

I don't recommend this to anyone. The books, yes.. I love them, and they have many a wonderful moment, all that make a sort of sense that's hard to find anywhere else.

Great For An ABC Family Thing!!!
truefam12 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I have to be honest. I was into this for the special FX. But as i Watched it, I thought, Great plot. I got more into it than i thought i would. With a budget of 7,500,000 , I thought it did a great job. What i liked most was Tom Skerritt. I think I like his work most in Category 7: The End of the World. This Movie is a pretty good Movie for a family with a little older kids. I did get a little anoid with the actress which played the leader of the powers. They did good though with the casting. I Thought the directing and script was also pretty good. They should get some points for that. Its worth seeing. I hope it comes out on DVD.

I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up says Old Scratch
michael_poff8 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, he's back and up to his usual tricks, hoodwinking mortals and angels alike. This is 4 1/2 hours that would have been better spent having my back waxed.

You can't really point to any one thing where this movie fails, but the sum of its failures is greater than the individual faults. The characters were unbelievable, the special effects were atrocious.I thought the flaming sword thing was the most pitiful aspect of it all.

This aired on the "family channel" but has language I would not want any of my kids exposed to. I have noticed that a lot about this channel when they aired the original version of Hairspray and the high school girls are talking about Hair-do girl being a "whore."

Really great family entertainment,ABC. Keep up the good work. I just blocked this channel on my youngest daughters satellite receiver.

Nuff said.

Fallen also includes an online story that follows another nephilim
dummy-2016 August 2006
After Fallen aired, there was a promotion that sent me to a website called www.oculareffect.com - this professor is looking into an online object he calls the Oculus (www.00112358.net) - almost every week it updates with a strange symbol (just like the ones that Aaron Corbett sees burned into his skin!). Inside there is a puzzle that unlocks a vision of the past or the future - so far it has sent us to another nephilim called Faith Arella who has a weblog (www.faitharella.com) - on it she is chasing these symbols to meet people around the world. It's another story that's happening online during the break between now and the next episode of Fallen - it looks pretty cool and I've already registered for email updates.

Disappointed...
icy_wind_200115 August 2006
As a lover of angels myself, I was quite disappointed and/or saddened to figure out that a, how should I put this, the negligence of research and lack of knowledge in this particular field. For example, in Biblical accounts it is clearly stated that God had stricken ALL angelic creatures from being able to reproduce or have such sexual organs. I would LOVE an explanation on how the protagonist of this show was able to fraternize and continue to have a history of human relationships. I don't see how such a big oversight could have happened when movies such as "Dogma", a well-known film, clearly pointed out that angels no longer have such organs, secondly, the sword fighting leaves a lot to be desired.

my opinion
fallen_forsakenever8 December 2012
it was good i think it could have been better in some areas like a little more with the book it was based off of but other then that i like it it was pretty accurate angels were able to reproduce but were forbidden to do so at one point cant really remember why which makes me wanna do some boring reading but i do know there's no where does it says he took away there ability to do so it might sound it it says that but if that were true then other parts of the scripts wouldn't make even more sense then they already do. when it comes to religious things like this nothing is gonna be 100 percent accurate and there is many reasons why that is but too many for me to wanna list.
