Mama Knows Best: A Retrospective (2005)

Nice 30-minute documentary taking a look at the making of BIG BAD MAMA, a Roger Corman produced, Angie Dickinson vehicle that pretty much came out of no where and became a monster hit for the King of the B's. Unlike a lot of documentaries out there, this one here manages to gather up the majority of the major members including producer Cormer, stars Dickinson and William Shatner, director Steve Carver and writers Frances Doel and William W. Norton. All of the members do a terrific job at talking about various aspects of the film including the fact that they had less than a half-a-million dollars to make it and they were working on a tight 20-day schedule. Dickinson talks about her original thoughts on the screenplay and how she automatically saw herself in the part. She also talks about the now legendary nudity she did for the part and also a couple scenes, which she felt simply went too far and crossed the line. Shatner has a fun time talking about the making of the production and of course Corman is as energetic as always. Clips from BIG BAD MAMA are sprinkled throughout the film and if you're a fan then you're certainly going to want to check this one out. It's now available with the MAMA Double-Feature from Shout!
