Exceptional in every respect
planktonrules28 February 2008
This is a wonderful documentary about modern South Africa and their struggle to build a democratic government post-Apartheid. Oddly, while practically the entire world shunned the racist government in South Africa in the 1980s, once self-rule was achieved, you practically never heard of this country again in the news. Many were predicting a blood-bath and anarchy--so what DID happen since the White government was eliminated? Did they ultimately become a reverse-racist and self-serving government like Mugabe in Zimbabwe or did they embrace freedom and justice? These questions are answered but done in such a unique and refreshing way that blew me away. Instead of a normal and dry documentary, the film begins with a short cartoon that is a metaphor for South Africa. Following this, actual interviews with South Africans (Black and White) were animated in a very colorful and beautiful manner--and accompanied by wonderful traditional African music. The result is like a gorgeous kaleidescope--colorful, beautiful and mesmerizing.

I am a world history teacher and would really love to know where I can find a copy of this documentary to show my class--in only about 12 minutes it's able to capture so much and instill such hope. A truly exceptional documentary in every respect.
