Did you know
- TriviaThis is the second and last time The Skipper is referenced to by his real name Jonas Grumby. This is at 6:35, by the radio announcer.
- GoofsThe whole reason Mary Ann went to go into her and Ginger's hut was because something she was cooking was burning. Yet when the hut collapses due to Gilligan recklessly trying to get the door open, it was clearly empty of anything.
- Quotes
Gilligan: [Inside the Professor's hut] Could I get back the saw and the chisel that you borrowed?
Professor Roy Hinkley: Oh yeah. I loaned the chisel to the girls, but the saw's over here some place.
[as he looks, Gilligan looks around at the hut rather impressed, then pulls out a small palm leaf no more than three inches long, and the wall it was in immediately falls down, surprising both the Professor and Gilligan]
Professor Roy Hinkley: Gilligan! What did you do to that wall?
Gilligan: Oh I'm sorry, Professor. All I did was pull out this one little palm leaf, and the whole thing fell down.
Professor Roy Hinkley: [Disbelieving] Oh, Come on!
Gilligan: Honest, Professor! That's what happened!
Professor Roy Hinkley: You can't tell me that pulling out one little palm leaf could make a whole wall fall down.
[With that, he walks over to the opposing wall, with Gilligan in tow, and pulls about three feet of palm leaf out of the wall and shows it to him]
Professor Roy Hinkley: I built this place! You remember?
[Gilligan then looks closely at the wall, and pulls out a similar short palm leaf to the one he originally pulled out, making that wall fall, and the rest of the hut to collapse as well]
- Alternate versionsOn the Sundance TV and IFC airings, the part where Gilligan pulls the ladder from under The Professor causing him to fall. Is cut.

Words and Music by George Wyle and Sherwood Schwartz
Probably the best example is both the Skipper and Gilligan swinging back and forth in skimpy hammocks, CRASHING, knocking heads --and let's do it all over again!
The theme is privacy... Should the castaways all live in one gigantic hut or build separate huts? That's the question. More over, an approaching monsoon storm requires immediate action. It seems logical --since there's both men and women present -- they build their own huts, setting up a makeshift outdoor woodshop?
This scene is what will begin an endless cycle of questions over the next three seasons. Where do the Skipper and Gilligan get all the tools? Where do all the clothes come from? Where does anything come from? Simply amazing. However, the gang gets the job done and constructs some really cool huts.
Mr. Howell comes off with the best lines, and immediately adopts his cuddly teddy bear. Jim Backus was a real find for the series, the perfect over the top character that Gilligan and the Skipper needed to play off. Very true, his character was more than likely modeled after the drunk millionaire (which Backus portrayed) trying to fly an airplane in the wild comedy, ITS A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD, the year before.
Also... it may have been Mary Ann (and/or Dawn Wells) who started a fad with Daisy Dukes, ya think? The series had the best wardrobe changes, everything from fur bikinis to suits and gowns.
We also get another glimpse of the famous man-made lake on the Studio City lot, where the castaways are stranded in the middle of the lagoon, all huddled together in the Skipper's and Gilligan's hut following the storm.
Great direction by Richard Donner, who had just finished several episodes for the TWILIGHT ZONE. Donner would head the SUPERMAN and LETHAL WEAPON series years later. The famous radio announcer is character actor Charles Maxwell, who would read more news bulletins in the next several episodes.
Note, the first season was filmed in black and white, later colorized, though the color is not as distinct as the next two seasons, which was natural color and beautifully remastered.
