Karate was not that well known in 1961. So when the diminutive Paulie uses it on the much bigger man, Coombes, it's a grabber and an effective opening hook. Actually the plot deals with a rather sensitive subject—mental problems following war service. Seems Paulie is suffering from a residual form from service in Korea, especially that of being ridiculed by other servicemen because of his short stature. Now, in a clouded state, he's seeking revenge against them. Worried, an old flame hires Pete to find out what's going on.
Edie puts in a cameo, looking really unhappy with Pete's PI preoccupations to her exclusion. Catch the Biblical-looking John Dierkes sporting a big mustache as a mental health professional. His Tall Man role in 1951's Red Badge Of Courage remains striking tribute to the distinctive looking actor. Much of the series's success comes from the Gunn-Jacoby chemistry again on meaningful display. All in all, it's a poignant and even thoughtful half-hour striking a slightly different note.
