The practice of sending oversized patients to the zoo or a veterinary hospital is a myth. According to the staff at Auburn University Veterinary Hospital, MRI companies do not manufacture machines for larger animals. Most animals are small enough to use human-size machines. Larger animals can be sedated and have partial MRIs done of various body parts, mainly the head and limbs, in regular machines, and now in larger bore machines that became more common in the 2010's,, but they do not have special machines available for veterinary purposes as it would be too costly.
Larger humans are often seen at labs with open MRI's and now, machines with a wider diameter bore, but the myth about sending fat people to the zoo has been discredited for decades. It is sustained mainly as a way of mocking western countries where obesity is more common.
As long as a patient's hip bones are narrow enough to fit into the machine, body fat can be compressed to allow them to use the normal machines.
