In 1954 there were Senate hearings on comic books and juvenile delinquency. These hearings used the same tactics of demagoguery that characterized Joseph McCarthy's red scare witch hunt. The hearings went so badly for the comics industry that publishers established the Comics Code Authority in self defense, resulting in decades of sanitized and 'inoffensive' content.
