Conscience on a Rack

Warning: Spoilers
Dorothy Wyley (Dame Flora Robson) is an elderly spinster. A headmistress at a school facing enforced retirement.

She is a religious woman who is being plagued with nightmares.

Dorothy is also facing blackmail demands and she's giving all her worldly goods away.

After what looks like a suicide attempt. Dr Corder tries to resolve the issues plaguing Dorothy Wyley.

It might lie with a mink coat she stole from a nightclub some 25 years earlier. That is the reason why she is being blackmailed. It turns out that event did not happen. Dorothy is blackmailing herself.

Dorothy's guilt is unlocked by hypnosis. A crush she had with a female pupil just during the outbreak of war. Racked with guilt she had the pupil expelled from school.

Guest star Flora Robson was already a Dame and an Oscar nominee by the time she appeared on this. She certainly gives an acting masterclass. There are no histrionics but a portrait of a troubled woman.

Dorothy's present trauma due to her delayed retirement because she lied about her age. It caused her to feel guilty about her past actions.
