Superb '70s sitcom silliness.
BA_Harrison1 November 2019
Poor Burt (Richard Mulligan): just as soon as he starts to patch things up with his stepson Danny (Ted Wass), and Danny has orders from the mob to kill him. Meanwhile, Burt's wife Mary (Cathryn Damon) is deeply concerned about her husband's lack of interest in the bedroom. How can Burt tell her that it is because he feels guilty about killing her first husband?

Confused? You might be, but you'll definitely be having a good time, the gags coming thick and fast, the players delivering their lines with perfect timing. This is definitely one of those shows where one episode a night simply isn't enough (was it really a week between shows back in the '70s? That would have been tough).

Episode 3

Following the disastrous dinner party meant to introduce Peter to the Tates, Jessica attempts to confess her infidelity to Chester, who misinterprets that she's accusing him (an accusation she would never make, as she believes him to be a faithful husband). Mary confronts Burt about his lack of interest in the bedroom, offering him a book titled "The Cookbook of Sex," complete with illustrations. Burt's joy at a reunion with his son Peter helps him patch things up with his two stepsons, Danny and Jodie. Danny cannot acknowledge that his brother is gay, believing him to be a practical joker with a wonderful sense of humor. When Danny decides to take the contract offered by the Godfather, he learns that he's now required to murder his own stepfather Burt, with whom he is just starting to develop a real relationship (the Godfather even gives him a paper bag containing a gun, saying "what did you think it was, spumoni to go?"). Danny has little choice in the matter since, if he fails in his task, the Mob will rub him out instead. The Godfather enthuses about his mother's linguini ("it's better than sex") as he gives a shocked Danny the gruesome details, adding that he himself would have done the same thing if he were Burt (Danny's father, Johnny Dallas, was not a nice person).

Plot gets into motion on this, the third episode of "Soap"
tavm12 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This ep of "Soap" continues the Campbells at the Tates' manor celebrating Burt's long-lost son's return as they all have dinner together which everyone except Jessica are enjoying as she stays in the kitchen to wallow in her misery at realizing that not only has she committed adultery but also-as Benson delightedly exclaims-incest though Mary helps explain that Peter is only her stepson with no real relation to either her or her sister. After a food fight because of Jodie's expressing his hots for Peter, the Campbells leave in a huff. At bed, Mary tries to get her husband in the mood by giving him a "cookbook on sex" to no avail. In the morning, Burt resolves to have better relations with Danny and Jodie especially the latter when he explains that he just wants to be treated like a human being. Back at the Tates, Chester gets a call from Claire to meet her at 2 in the morning just before Jessica arrives as she tries to tell him about her affair but Chester takes her euphemisms to mean she's accusing him of not being faithful and leaves in a huff. And Danny meets with the Godfather at that guy's mother's restaurant to agree to the contract...until he finds out that Burt is his father's killer. Well, I guess it will be a while before Burt and Danny become friends...Another hilarious ep of "Soap" especially whenever Benson makes his comments. Still not much on Eunice Tate but it seems Billy-who's fourteen here-already knows what it means to sit in a car with a girl as he asks mother Jessica for the car key to open the door but that same mother is clueless as what his intentions are! Can't wait for the fourth ep of "Soap" when I get around to it. Until then...

More brilliance.

Tennis coach Peter is introduced to his new extended family at a dinner party, an evening get together that isn't a success, ending up in a food fight.

This show is proving to be addictive, this third episode was yet another belly laugh fun ride. No time is wasted, no lines are wasted, genuinely funny from start to finish.

The format works so well, I am loving the way one episode leads into the next, it's such a novel idea.

Wonderful, old fashioned slapstick humour, the food fight was a riot, and once again it's the wonderful Benson who steals the show, his scathing remarks about the entire family are a joy.

Who'd have thought that food fights could be so much fun!!!!

9/10.
