riveting but ultimately unsatisfying
dwoolfe9931 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching this movie about 10 minutes ago on Netflix, and I want to write this out while it's fresh in my mind. It wasn't until a few minutes after the credits rolled that I began to consider what it was that I disliked about it.

The movie is well made. The photography, lighting, pacing, editing, and acting are all above average. This is a film maker who could make a stunning film with the right material.

The plot has been described by other reviews. A "businessman" with unspecified ties to the US government is kidnapped while in Europe on business. He is held in an unspecified place, charged with unspecified crimes, and tortured in a progressively brutal fashion. Whoever wrote this screenplay is obviously a devotee of Kafka.

The problem lies in the thematic content of the film, or actually, how the thematic content is expressed. The film embraces more or less three interlocking themes. They are:

First, the idea that everything is theater and entertainment to the masses, not just including the suffering of others, but *especially* the suffering of others. This theme is not original in an of itself. It's echoed in films embracing such diverse settings as the Roman Coliseum in Gladiator, or the tortured rantings of Howard Beal in Network.

Second, the observation that people will go to the worst, most barbaric extremes in service of an ideology or belief system to which they fanatically adhere. In his mind, the extremist believes he is morally justified in what he does. So what if he takes a man's eyes out with a spoon. His Enemy has done a million fold worse than this. This too is not entirely original but it is certainly a theme worth exploring.

Third, we have the theme of sin, penance, and redemption, either in a religious or secular humanistic sense (the two are depicted as parallel). This is where the trouble lies. By the end of this movie, this man has had practically everything taken away from him, his body being taken apart piece by piece. At this point, no one cares what the man has or hasn't done, whether he was truly sincere when he read his scripted apology to his neighbors when he stole from them as a child, whether his business dealings were black, white or grey. None of this matters because the over the top cruelty of his tormentors has rendered him a pure, unmitigated victim. We are horrified and sympathize with him entirely. His kidnappers are are psychopaths with no redeeming qualities.

This kind of simplistic emotional reaction from the viewer is less than a movie of this apparent thematic complexity suggests. This unending torture acts as a thematic bulldozer, causing everything else hinted at which may have been interesting about the movie to recede into the background. At the end, that's what you get, to feel pathos and nothing more.

Creating a good thematic mix in a film is like cooking. All ingredients in their proper portion. Overdo one ingredient and it overpowers the rest and produces an unsatisfying brew.

I recommend this to people who appreciate film-making for its craft, especially that done on a limited budget. For all others, well, you just read the review. Make up your own mind.

So this guy wakes up in this room....

Warning: Spoilers
The movie Senseless was one of those movies I risked renting on iTunes. The premise seemed to display some promise in the suspense department. I am a bit split on my opinion of this movie as it primarily takes place inside this white wall confine in which Jason Behr's character is being held hostage for a televised torture porno. Apparently online viewers can pay his captors vast amounts of money just so they can watch our protagonist undergo sporadic and systematic torture sequences.

Overall, it was well produced and acted. Senseless operated effectively within its budget and didn't take any economical risks since most of the screening is dedicated to that one white walled room. The main villain had some depth but his henchmen other than the villainess Nim were just bodies behind alien masks. The protagonist is well developed yet still remained mysterious as one of the innocent victims. Senesless is a movie with deeply disturbing psychological roots that uncovers certain moral issues. This was a movie that definitely made me think.

Senseless tried to keep me intrigued and sustained in the protagonist's cubicle but nonetheless made me impatient to watch. The occasional supporting cast that play his captors are temporarily refreshing but it gets old quickly when they systematically continue throughout the film maiming Jason Behr's character. Yes, I found myself wincing at the bazaar torture sequences every time they bound him. But it did get repetitive, and it felt like a run around. I hastily anticipated a pivotal escape scene or something else other than a meaningless flashback, but none of that happened.

My other problem was the sensibility in the writing and yes, the questionable flashbacks that didn't really applied to the story but rather too much on Jason's Behr's character. I was asking myself if people are contributing money to the captor's cause, wouldn't the money be tracked straight to the captors hideout? To where a much desired SWAT team could make an intermittent imposition? That part just doesn't make sense and needed more elaboration to why the protagonist was held for 6 weeks without any hope to be rescued.

What would have worked for Senseless was maybe a better side story that would lead to the inevitable "release" of the main character. Maybe some more funding to create a slew of extras to add some richness to the story. Some plot holes could have been covered.

I am a bit iffy on recommending Senseless. But overall it was okay and wasn't entirely disappointing.

senseless - pointless

Warning: Spoilers
i found the plot synopsis for this movie pretty interesting and for sure the basic ideas could have been easily transformed into an excellent movie, so i found it very promising to check out this flick. usually i try to stay neutral and don't get my hopes too high upfront and would for sure have been satisfied with an at least mediocre thrill ride.

it all starts with our main protagonist captured and been held captivated by a group of people that claim that he is a guest and is about to change. to archive that they want to take away what means the most to him. as soon as he gets tortured for the first time and they take his sense of taste away the viewer instantly knows what that is: his senses. since there aren't too many of those we it becomes clear very early in the movie what will happen within the next 90 minutes. as a movie buff it always worries me when they reveal most of the next events so early in a movie. there are very few directors to either manage to dig themselves outta that hole use that to their advance. Hitchcock would be one of those rare examples that even used this as a stylistic element. unfortunately we don't see such brilliance here.

we further get explained that his sufferings are being broad casted. by that they can only mean an internet stream as TV would be way too off. people can contribute money, write letters and vote his sufferings to stop. the main goal according to the kidnappers is to get together money for their operations.

our protagonist also gets some time with a seemingly innocent female that claims that she doesn't support the ways of the group she's in. this might have been believable in 1960 when this genre wasn't as overused as it uses to be, but nowadays this is simply not plausible.

to justify that exactly this guy has been picked for the operation we see some flashbacks and some explanations by the protagonist himself into the camera, showing that he has been a ruthless idiot without morals in his life. not, necessarily evil, but just not a good guy. i have no idea why that should be a justification for keeping him captivated, torture him for weeks and then cripple him for life, but alright.

all of this counted together makes what we see completely random. the main character is not sympathetic and not evil. the evildoers are simply villains without a reasonable justification. after 45 minutes it just gets mighty boring as it is completely random and pointless. as the graphic violence shown has no real meaning but to shock and disgust the viewer it gets extremely boring. i don't enjoy watching someone getting tortured for 90 minutes. there is no thrill in that, it's just stupid.

nevertheless i was hoping for a clever conclusion AND twist at the end to make up for my lost time. disappointingly this doesn't happen and the movie simply ends.

don't get me wrong, i am a horror movie fan, but this is not a horror movie. there is no thrill in it. i enjoy getting scared and i have seen quite a few Japanese extreme horror movies, but without justification there is no thrill. if this would have been an action movie it would have been transfered to this: i guy drives around in a car and just kicks the heck out of random people and shoots some other, without no reason or background story behind it.

also this genre of movie is not new. if it were there would at least been the justification of going beyond everything else that has been done in other movies just to prove a point. i know for a fact that this has been done much more extreme to prove those points. if you take a look at the guinea pig series then even in the genre of wannabe-snuff-movies this example is just a very lame attempt to even reach those limits.

overall this has been a very disappointing experience.

Tortured
kosmasp9 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I won't spoil the ending, but I will talk about the (paper thin) plot, that's why I put the spoiler alert/tag. If you haven't seen the movie, but have plans to do so (although I wouldn't recommend that as you can see by my voting), I'd tell you not to read this beforehand.

This movie is in the vain of similar torture movies (or "gorno" as they are called). While the American business man is supposed to be a everyday man we (or let's say a "western" audience) can relate to, but still stay ambiguous enough, that never fully gets "exploited". Instead it's more exploitation and in a bad way. Robbing a man of his "senses" and making it as painful as possible. But watching this is even more painful, especially because it is as predictable as it can get. While Saw (at least the first one) had an intelligent twist to the whole thing, this movie tries to disguise the whole torture thing with a social commentary, that just doesn't work ...

What I didn't know, but read here on IMDb, is the fact, that this was based on a novel. As a read this might have been more interesting, but after watching the movie, I don't feel the need for more ... "torture"

Provocative, stimulating thriller!
pointblankprods14 June 2009
A shocking and thought provoking film, Senseless is a low budget thriller from the talented, Bafta award winning, Scottish director Simon Hynd and starring American TV star Jason Behr.

A moral maze, the film tells the story of Elliot Gaast, an American executive of dubious ethical standards who is captured by a mysterious group and tortured live on the internet with the systematic removal of his 5 senses.

A clever, subtle script works both as a straightforward and gruesome body horror film and a driven, satirical stab at American globalisation and consumer culture.

Reality TV is also a target, with the sporadic use of Big Brother-esquire CCTV footage to underpin the implication that maybe these events aren't so far removed from our current reality or future. At a time when middle eastern terrorists are using video footage to show bombings and be-headings, the film seems remarkably current and prescient.

Never an easy watch, the torture scenes themselves are disturbing and unpleasant but help to reinforce the mood, tone and structure of the piece. You will almost certainly struggle to look at a cheese grater in the same way again. Jason Bher, who belies his status as a former teenage TV sex symbol throughout, is particularly effective in these scenes and gives his character a humanity and empathy that the audience can cling to in the more grizzly moments.

A serious and interesting film, Senseless demands attention and rewards it with a challenging and contemplative look at our troubled society.

**A point of warning to anyone watching the German DVD version of this film - it is a total mess, cut to shreds by the distribution company to avoid a costly censorship battle. My advice is to skip this version entirely as it makes no sense.**

Like SAW/Hostel but better
jennifer-25-96523130 July 2011
This movie is somewhat comparable to the SAW/Hostel type movie but in my opinion it was much better. Overall this movie was greatly produced and acted and I felt sucked into this movie almost from the start of it. The torture is horrible as most torture movies are but you feel so connected to this flawed main character you can't help but watch the whole time rooting for him to get back at his captures.

I also have to give credit to the villain. His friendly and super polite manner just made him seem so much more wicked and evil. As he descended deeper into his madness he became out of control with anger but still kept his polite and friendly manner making you want to hate him more.

I loved the lighting in this movie as well. Everything seemed so bright from his hospital looking prison to his flashbacks on life. Great movie overall, I enjoyed every second of it.

Simulated Audience Participation
sitabanu9 July 2011
Watching this 'movie' was an awe-filled exercise in simulated audience participation. The viewer is quite aware - on one level - that it is a movie within a virtual reality show but on another level does prove - if one watches it to the end - that we are fascinated with pain as long as it is not our own to borrow a phrase from the writer. The truth of one statement certainly lingers..."Debt is better than any treaty," and finds its equally horrible juxtaposition that "Sin is nothing without judgment". I cannot say this was a likable movie and no doubt the lesson is as ironic as the statement "Being innocent didn't make anyone not get beat up." If nothing else the viewer goes on a philosophical journey into man's inhumanity to man's steps at civilization versus being civilized. Still appropriate and should remain so...but at some point won't we really have to get better at it?

A unique and fascinating film.
gilmartin0918 January 2009
An American business man is held hostage and tortured for his crimes. His captivity is broadcast on the internet where the public vote on his fate.

If the mention of torture in the synopsis leaves you expecting a variation on Hostel or the Saw series you will no doubt be disappointed. In many ways Senseless is the antithesis of those films which use violence and torture to titillate the audience. Instead it actively engages the viewer, forcing them to question their motivation for watching.

This is a brave and provocative film. It plays out in a white, featureless room with only one flawed character for the viewer to root for, and yet within these restrictive parameters the director has fashioned a tight, terrifying story that sucks you in almost despite yourself and gives you that feeling of desperately wanting to turn away, while being too tied up in the characters and story to stop watching.

Yes, the violence is sickening at times, and in many respects it is totally senseless, but I think that's the point.

Excellent in every way!
tyler-swain924 January 2012
I was on Netflix last night and saw this movie. Just the cover alone with the tagline got my attention. The movie itself was very well done. The acting for me was very believable. It really makes you feel like you are there. During the entire duration of this movie, all I was thinking was how would someone like that keep his sanity without going insane. It truly makes you think about this world and how far the business world will go. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a torture movie. I love Saw and love any movie where someone is being tortured, but the difference is major; This is a political torture, not strictly teaching someone a lesson, for them to appreciate life. This movie made me think in a way that i didn't think I'd be able to. Im very glad I read.

Brilliant thriller
chavisatkins11 August 2011
This movie is a movie that is a true gem in the rough. It tells the story of a man whom is kidnapped and tortured for the crimes of America in a whole but to prove a point at the same time. The acting was really flawless and real but the torture was just gut wrenching. Senseless is really about the lost of this mans senses but how many will he have taken from him or will there be any at all? Well by the title it is obvious but I didn't quite see the blatant of it while watching as you become so involved with the characters humiliation, loneliness, pain and suffering that you want it all to stop.

There are parts in the movie that get very disturbing and sad because you ask yourself "Is this really going to happen?". Not just that but then "Is this method really being used?". I can't imagine the pain in reality one would go through in what the protagonist did but it has to be out of this world. The story could have been developed more in particular parts such as a bit of the captors motive in specifically him and behind the scenes of where the main actor was confined. The story is deep and more than just a sight for blood lust and horror. Watch closely and listen to all that is being portrayed as it is important.

I really don't understand the voters at all on IMDb and Netflix but this movie should be seen for its morality and message of todays politics and such. Such that brings today's society in such uproar and battle. I am very much satisfied with what I have seen and give this movie a 8.5 out of 10. Not for kids or squeamish but a true piece of art.

Not for kids under 40.
meytipeyti23 February 2009
This is a once in a lifetime film that reminds me of Benjamin Button. It is surely over the top and reaches the highs as The Lord of the Rings. Characters' performances are very acceptable.Action is JUST enough to keep you going and sometimes more than enough. No foolish romance and sympathy is expressed and the story leads you to the essence of the human nature. The film is full of bright moments and they are just flickers in time ,as in the real life is the case. It is left for the viewer to capture the essence of the moments as in real life. I think it is why the rating is low for this film. I would have voted 20 out of ten if it was allowed.

A man is tortured for his supposed sins
LordMittensXXIII6 December 2011
This is definitely worth seeing. Aside from the violence, and the manner in which the writer chooses to write the viewer into the participation of the violence, this is a movie about ethical choices, and about the man being tortured. Flashes of his back story are interspersed with his imprisonment and torture, and you get the feeling that, regardless of the unfairness of his predicament, he is actually thinking about, and regretting, the choices he's made.True to a great many indie stories, this might not turn out the way you want, but it is a satisfying story.

Fleshing out the movie are a couple of vocal antagonists, a man and a woman, who seem to play a "good cop, bad cop" game with the victim. The bearded man seems to know he is doing right because he is doing what most of the viewers want him to do, and he believes he has morality on his side. The moral overtones start to wear off, and it becomes clear that he is there because he is enjoying his role. The woman appears to want to help the victim. It's worth it if you have 90mins to kill.
