The art style in this episode is very different from the rest of the series, with stylized "anime-like" character models and proportions. In fact, the character models for this episode are based on the Studio Ox designs rather than the standard animation models used for the other episodes of the series. It is widely believed that this lone episode was animated by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, though little evidence has been found to confirm this. Still, the episode is considered to be the most beautifully animated one in the whole cartoon.
This episode marks the last appearance of the Dinobots, Trypticon, Ravage, and Jazz (who can be seen running in the background in one shot) in the western cartoon.
This is the only time that Soundwave's two dinosaur cassettes, Slugfest and Overkill appear.
Although the story centers around animal-based Transformers, two well known bird Transformers, Laserbeak and Buzzsaw are strangely absent.
Instead of using stock footage from The Transformers: The Movie (1986), the animators created completely new animation for the flashback of Unicron's destruction. It is surprisingly well animated and detailed, and would not look out of place in the movie itself.
