It makes you appreciate John Ford's direction but it's also way, way too short.

This is a special feature included on the DVD for "The Informer"--a film John Ford made for RKO and which was released in 1936. Victor McLaglen received the Oscar for best actor for this film.

"The Informer: Out of the Fog" is an exceptionally short special feature. It's only about 10 minutes long--and that's my biggest complaint about the featurette. Fortunately, it IS a good short despite this because it manages to draw attention and discuss the best part of the film--the great use of cheap sets and a minimal budget. Learning about Ford's cost-cutting measures was pretty interesting and it really made me appreciate his direction--even though I was NOT a huge fan of the original movie, as McLaglen's winning performance, when seen to day, seems VERY overwrought and a bit silly at times.

It's as if THE INFORMER exists in a political vacuum . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . to hear OUT OF THE FOG's quartet of film technicians raving about "German Expressionism, Surrealism, Art Films, and Back-Lighting" with nary a peep about the fact that INFORMER director John Ford himself was perhaps the biggest Real Life yellow-bellied Rat Fink Fascist Gestapo-Style Snitch in American--if not World--history. "Snitches may get stitches" in the land of THE INFORMER, Ireland, but in Hollywood they become weighed down with Oscars. Just look at the trio of Elia "ON THE WATERFRONT" Kazan, Ford, and Ford's prized puppet, M. Mitchell "John Wayne" Morrison as examples proving this Truism. Professional jock sniffer Peter Bogdanovich is among the best here at turning a blind eye toward the Real Life havoc wreaked by his over-rated idols at whose clay feet he continually grovels. This all reminds me of that German Death Camp Commandant who raves for 15 minutes about how "his" Jewish string quartet has outdone themselves with their latest virtuoso performance. "Unfortunately," he sniffs, looking at his watch, "your time is up, so into the ovens with you--Snell!"
