"Kasperletheater" is something like the Punch & Judy show in other places - hand puppets on a plywood stage. In Germany, the cast used to include Kasperle (Punch), Gretel (Judy), as well as a king, a robber, a policeman, a devil, and a crocodile, and more.

This East German animation centers mostly on the Devil. He escapes from the puppet chest, and steals the cakes prepared for Granma's birthday. All the gang soon goes on hot pursuit (in the course of which the Policeman breaks his leg), but can't prevent him from eating them all.

The easy solution is to buy another round of cakes at the baker's. The party goes on as planned, and even the Devil joins in, albeit with a heavy indigestion. Gretel supplies medicine for him to get better.

This curious but quite enjoyable piece came with the "Das tapfere Schneiderlein" DVD of SuperIllu, Sep. 2008. An interesting, and quite nice glimpse into German socialist movie-making for children, almost 50 years ago...
