There are few genre films of any kind quite as respected as 1954's "Godzilla." Directed by Ishiro Honda, the film was an examination of post-World War II Japan, a nation that had experienced the horrors of the atomic bomb. The now-iconic monster was a narrative device used to reckon with those horrors, and even though some 70 years later the movie has secured its place in cinema history, it wasn't always a sure thing. So much so that composer Akira Ifukube was advised to back out of doing the project by his peers for fear that it would ruin his career.
In the 2019 book "Life Godzilla," it's explained that production company Toho was not confident in the film ahead of its release. "Godzilla" was a movie that could have ended a great many careers. "We couldn't reassure them," said assistant director Koji Kajita. "There was still no soundtrack and without it the film looked stupid.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire premiered on March 29, 2024, as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, but fans are amazed, as the movie became a box office hit! The movie was directed by Adam Wingard, whom we have recently talked about as the potential director of a live-action ThunderCats movie, which was rumored to be the director’s next project, following Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. But, as the most recent reports confirm, Wingard’s next project won’t be the planned ThunderCats movie, but it won’t be a sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire either.
Namely, as it has been confirmed, Adam Wingard has accepted to direct an action movie, Onslaught, for A24, as the indie production company is moving up in the movie world, becoming...

Warning: This article discusses spoilers for "The Fall Guy."
It may seem like the next "Deadpool" movie already has the market cornered on breaking the fourth wall and making meta jokes about its own existence, but Universal's "The Fall Guy" just might have it beat. The David Leitch action movie/romantic comedy has all the makings of being the exact kind of blockbuster audiences need these days (just read /Film's review by Jacob Hall for more), but despite its old-school movie star charm and "Romancing The Stone" vibes, writer Drew Pearce loaded the script with some of the wittiest and most self-reflexive observations about our current state of the industry. The idea of giving some love back to the hardworking yet underappreciated community of stunt people takes top priority throughout the (mis)adventures of Ryan Gosling's stuntman Colt Seavers, of course, but the main villain of the story...

A24 have announced a new action-thriller from director Adam Wingard called Onslaught. A24 will work with Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company to produce the flick. The film is reuniting Adam Wingard with his long time collaborator Simon Barrett. Annoyingly, and of course, details were not divulged in the announcement. Other reports claim that Onslaught will be in the vein of The Guest and You're Next, which is not a bad thing, at all. A24 will handle worldwide releasing. Principal photography will begin in Fall 2024....

As Kong continues to terrorise us in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, we rate some chilling chimps
Despite the English title, there’s only one “ape” in this cheesy slice of Mexploitation, once labelled a video nasty. A mad doctor transplants the heart of a gorilla into his dying son; the youth turns into a homicidal simian creep who sexually assaults women. Also features a lady luchador.

Horror fans have had a whole lot of zombie entertainment sent our way in the last couple decades, much of it broadcast on television by AMC. There have been so many flesh-eaters and brain-munchers on our screens, some of us are feeling zombie overload. But if you’re still looking for zombie stories that do things a little differently from the others, we have a recommendation for you: a Japanese film that mixes the walking dead with shootouts, swordfights, and lengthy martial arts fights. It’s called Versus – and if you haven’t seen this one yet, it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Versus (watch it Here) was an independent production made by a bunch of unknowns, and many of the people involved with the movie remain unknowns to this day. It marked the feature directorial debut of Ryuhei Kitamura, who has gone on to have a solid career,...

Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order is the third film in a trilogy that The Asylum began in Ape vs Monster and continued in Ape vs Mecha Ape. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Box Office Collection Day 34: Enters 100 Crore Club( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has entered the 100 Crore Club. The film was always on course to achieve this feat but still it had seemed that it would reach there in the coming weekend. However, the kind of hold that it had demonstrated, despite playing at lower levels, has been better than expected and that’s what has allowed it to reach there with one more day to spare in the current week.
The film had hardly fallen from Friday (46 lakhs) as Monday numbers were super solid at 41 lakhs. Then on Tuesday the film in fact went on to grow further to 47 lakhs which was even bigger than Friday. However the major push came in Wednesday when collections almost doubled up and then went all the way to 85 lakhs, which is actually pretty good.

There has been a constant battle of human vs AI in art as the technology now seems to be tempting to many artists. Sure, sometimes, AI does marvel bringing out the acute wonders our minds can imagine with prompts. But how can prompts be an art form? Fans now question Millennium Films’ President’ justification as he openly admitted using AI in the new Hellboy film.

The Detective Conan movie franchise has achieved a monumental milestone, surpassing a total of 100 million viewers in Japan. Ostensibly a big-screen reboot of the 1980s television series of the same name, “The Fall Guy” is actually director and former stunt performer David Leitch’s love letter to both his wife, producer Kelly McCormick, and the undersung art of stunt work — only not always in that order.
Working closely with screenwriter and executive producer Drew Pearce, who previously scripted his “Fast and the Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” Leitch creates a clearinghouse of gobsmacking stunts (some truly record-breaking) while chronicling the tumultuous relationship between veteran stunt man Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) and first-time director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). It’s quick-witted (and quick-footed) fun that bridges multiple generations of Hollywood moviemaking, melding together rom-coms and bombastic action into one blockbuster package.
Since making his screenwriting debut on Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3,” Pearce has developed an aptitude for conceiving stories that maintain a singular yet cohesive tonal balance.

After years of being on the cusp of going completely mainstream, the latest anime film in the Detective Conan/Case Closed franchise, The Million-Dollar Pentagram , has finally put all the pieces together and in just 18 days has made over 9 billion yen at the Japanese box office. Not only that, the latest film has pushed the entire movie series past 100 million tickets sold, making it the third franchise in Japan to do so. As of Monday, April 29, Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram has brought in 9.29 billion yen (US$59.51 million) on the back of 6.44 million tickets sold. This makes it the 61st highest-grossing film in Japan of all time and the 19th highest-grossing anime film in Japan ever, passing Studio Ghibli’s Arrietty . The Million-Dollar Pentagram is currently outpacing Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine ’s box office gross by a wide margin, likely to overtake the highest-grossing film in the franchise at 13.73 billion yen very soon.

The past two weekends at the box office have been, in a word, miserable. Yes, "Challengers" won this most recent frame with a $15 million opening, but the total take for the weekend domestically was just over $60 million. Last weekend, when "Abigail" and Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperformed, the weekend total was barely above $65 million. When total ticket sales for a weekend are less than what would be a so-so opening weekend for a summer blockbuster, things are dire. Fortunately, there are a couple of bright spots among the darkness.
On its fifth weekend in theaters, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" pulled in $7.2 million domestically, dropping just 25% from weekend four. It held the number three spot on the charts behind this weekend's newcomers, "Challengers" and "Unsung Hero" ($7.75 million). That was also enough to bring it past the $500 million mark globally. Godzilla is back in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. There isn’t a more intriguing monster in movie history than the Kaiju, better known among the English audience as Godzilla. The resurgence of the Monsterverse in 2014 with Godzilla signaled the exciting return of humans trying to stay alive with a gigantic, mutated monster terrorizing their town. While there have been a handful of movies in this franchise, it’s the Apple TV series spanning different decades about the secret organization documenting everything there is to know about Godzilla that’s caught everyone’s attention. The kaiju must battle! Srs Cinema has revealed a short official trailer for War of the Ninja Monsters: Jaron vs Goura, a homemade kaiju movie from Japanese filmmaker Shinpei Hayashiya. It's set for a Blu-ray release this summer from Srs Cinema - available to pre-order already on their site now. The ninja monsters Jaron and Goura appear in the city of Chichibu, and rival ninja clans manipulate the ninja beasts into a fierce battle. The cast and crew includes suit actros Mizuho Yoshida and Akihiko Ohashi, cinematographer / VFX / editor Masayuki Nagata, composer Yasuhiro Ueda, monster designer Shinji Nishikawa, suit and prop makers Naofumi Kanamori and Tomohiro Matsumoto, and many others. The Mummy Box Office (Domestic): Here’s How Much It Earned On It Re-Release Opening Weekend(Photo Credit – IMDb)
Universal Pictures is bringing some classic movies back to the theatres in the United States. On Friday, the fan-favorite adventure movie The Mummy was re-released. People went into the theatres despite several other releases like Challengers and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire running there to boost the classic’s box office collections.
The movie will turn twenty-five this year and will always be one of the best movies about Egypt’s mummies in cinema history. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz‘s chemistry captivated us and will always remain close to our hearts. The film did well at the box office back then and has managed to bring some loyal audience to the theatres.
Earlier this month reports about The Mummy re-releasing in the theatres were all over the media.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Box Office Collection Day 31: Hits 1 Crore Mark For The Last Time ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
For the last time in its theatrical run, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has seen 1 crore mark being crossed at the box office. It was a push for that to happen, especially after Friday had dipped to 46 lakhs and then premium IMAX and 4Dx screens too had gone to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Still, courtesy the equity that the film has managed to build for the last few weeks, there is a residual audience that’s stepping in, and that’s what’s keeping it alive.
This was seen from 1.14 crore more than it gathered to collect in theatres on Sunday. It’s good to see that at least there is one holdover release for over a month that’s still managing to collect some moolah at least, though...

It's been six movies since Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" in 2014, and Adam Wingard seems to have finally cracked the code. Wingard's sublimely silly "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" happily abandoned all the portent and dourness of the first MonsterVerse movie, choosing instead to celebrate shallow monster mayhem and sugared-up, Saturday-morning-ready fantasy conceits that gleefully abandon logic. Kong lives in the Hollow Earth and fights jackal monsters, while Godzilla rules the surface world where he fights crabs and naps in the Colosseum. These are the basic tenets of a skewed universe lousy with monsters. There are magical stones under the earth that control gravity and miniature wormholes that monsters use to teleport around the planet. Everything is wild and nothing makes sense. And there is an integrity to that.
It seems, however, that there was some injection of actual reality into the film's production. Wingard and his crew filmed "Godzilla x Kong" in Gold Coast,...

April came to a close with a number of smaller releases, ahead of the start of the summer movie season launching in May, though one movie definitely stood out ahead of the others. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Luca Guadagnino‘s tennis romance, “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, opened in 3,477 theaters on Friday with solid reviews, racking up $1.9 million in previews from Thursday and earlier. After pulling in $6.2 million on Friday (including previews), “Challengers” won the weekend with ease, making an estimated $15 million, and receiving a fair “B+” CinemaScore from audiences polled, as the movie became the talk of social media all weekend. “Challengers” also added another $9 million overseas in 52 markets to bring its global total to $25 million.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues the success streak of the Kaiju-verse following Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Godzilla Minus One. The film showed the triumphant return of frenemies Kong and Godzilla after their intense brawl in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. While critics were mixed on the film, audiences lapped up the epic reunion of the two monsters.

Godzilla X Kong The New Empire Box Office Collection Day 30 Update (Photo Credit – Instagram)
After bringing in 46 lakhs on Friday, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire managed to grow again on Saturday with 88 lakhs more coming in. Last week, the film had collected 80.10 lakhs on Friday and then grown quite well to 1.45 crore on Saturday which had helped in keeping the momentum alive. Now even though the numbers have increased on Saturday, they still haven’t touched the 1 crore mark.
One now waits to see if there is a good jump today which will allow the 1 crore milestone to be crossed. As has been seen for so many months now, growth between Saturday and Sunday has been rather muted for the best of the films, and hence, it would be challenging for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as well. Still, from a sheer academic perspective, it’s always good...

Did you know there are only two perfect horror movies? Or that there are only two perfect sci-fi films? At least, that's what Rotten Tomatoes would have you believe. The great arbiter of our collective cinematic taste has bestowed the hallowed 100% Tomatometer rating on just a handful of films across cinema history, and the result of this incessant ranking of art has apparently left us with two perfect "Toy Story" movies and just a single perfect "Godzilla" film. What a world.
Anyway, for whatever reason, Rotten Tomatoes scores remain consistently alluring to us all, even showing up on our streaming interfaces and instantly deciding for us whether a movie is worth a watch. Now, it's time to put cinematic legend and Hollywood hero Charlie Chaplin under the microscope and see how this giant of the industry can stand up to the mighty Tomatometer.

Warner Bros, the studio who just might win it all this year, can celebrate $1.2 billion being grossed around the world between Legendary’s Dune: Part Two, which just crossed $700M, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire surpassing $500M. The moment comes as the studio re-released Dune: Part Two this weekend in Imax, just in time to coincide with Zendaya’s other movie in release, Amazon MGM Studios’ Challengers, which Warners is handling overseas.
Dune: Part Two so far is the highest grossing movie of the year and buries the first 2021 film’s $407.5M global gross in the sand, that pic’s domestic release siphoned due to the studio’s pandemic theatrical-day-and-date release on streaming service Max. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong is less than $25M away from overtaking the first Legendary Monsterverse 2014 title, Godzilla‘s global gross of $524.9M. Box Office – Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Is Fair On 5th Friday (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After being quite stable during the weekdays, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire did see a bit of a drop on Friday as 46 lakhs came in. On Thursday, the film had collected 56 lakhs and it has gone down by around 10 lakhs.
Now, given the fact that no major Hindi release has arrived, one would have expected the numbers to stay stable at least instead of taking a drop. However, as mentioned in yesterday’s report, since Hollywood’s own Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has arrived, it has taken away all highly priced properties like IMAX and 4Dx.
Hence, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has to contend with 2D and some very select 3D screens. Even otherwise, the film has actually completed most of its run and is now hanging in there since there are...

Sony Pictures is playing a little release date shuffle this Friday evening. Kraven the Hunter, the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was originally slated to hit theaters on August 30th, but the film has now been pushed back to a December 13th release. Kraven the Hunter‘s fresh release date was already occupied by the new Karate Kid movie, which has now been bumped to May 30, 2025.
Kraven the Hunter has been delayed several times already, but hopefully, this will be the last move. Coming on the heels of the less-than-impressive debuts of Morbius and Madame Web, this Spider-Man spin-off has a lot to prove, but with an R-rated edge, it could just turn the tide. Director J.C. Chandor has previously described the movie as a tragedy. “Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this. but the story is a tragedy,” Chandor said last summer. “When the final credits roll on this film,...

The original 1954 "Godzilla" film may look a bit worn 70 years after its release, but one aspect of the movie is still capable of reaching across time and space to rattle the nerves of modern moviegoers: that famous kaiju roar. Ishirō Honda's groundbreaking film brought its eponymous creature to life with a screeching, discordant sound that sends tingles down the spine, and it's a noise that the latest Toho Studios masterpiece, the critically acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One," aimed to emulate and expand upon.
In an interview with A Frame, the sound team behind the Oscar-winning film explained exactly how they put together the new Godzilla roar, a stunning noise that punctuated the film's first trailer and sounds even better in context. According to writer-director Takashi Yamazaki, he and the sound team decided to create the latest roar in part by replaying the original audio in a space that would allow for major echoes and reverberations.

This piece contains spoilers about “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”
Even now, months after she wrapped production on Season 1 of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” breakout star Mari Yamamoto gets admittedly emotional while talking about the show’s finale.
The actress plays Keiko Mura, a Japanese scientist who, in the 1950s, helped start the organization Monarch alongside Bill Randa (Anders Holm) and Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) to understand and study Godzilla and other Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs). But after a mission gone wrong, Keiko is presumed dead and is only later discovered to have survived, barely aged for decades, within a part of Hollow Earth she’s coined Axis Mundi. It’s there, in the show’s finale, where Keiko reunites with an elder Lee and realizes that her 57 days spent in Axis Mundi have translated to literal decades on Earth.

The Shawshank Redemption has often been considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. The film was based on a novel by Stephen King and starred Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins in the lead roles. While the film has been a cult classic since its release, its director Frank Darabont has reportedly been blacklisted by the TV and film industries.
Darabont was reportedly instrumental in the success of the AMC series The Walking Dead, for which he was a director, executive producer, and developer. However, the filmmaker was reportedly fired before the production of season two, leading him to sue AMC. Now, Darabont is all set to make a comeback with Netflix’s Stranger Things.

The MonsterVerse continues to be a winning franchise for Warner Bros. and Legendary as "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" had another good weekend at the box office. While it was, all around, a bad weekend for theaters with not one but three new releases underperforming, the latest kaiju brawl in this ever-expanding universe held strong in its fourth weekend of release. It now ranks as the biggest entry in the franchise since 2017, surpassing 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong."
Director Adam Wingard's "The New Empire" pulled in $9.5 million in its fourth frame, placing third on the charts behind A24's "Civil War" ($11.1 million), which was in its second weekend, and Universal's "Abigail" ($10.2 million), which was new to theaters. The latest MonsterVerse film dropped just 38%, demonstrating an excellent hold week-to-week. Part of that has to do with a lack of direct competition in the marketplace but, either way, it's good news for WB and Legendary.

Dan Stevens is having the time of his life as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has become a big hit for Warner Bros and Legendary. His versatility in switching from a delightfully charming role to an intense individual in the two films is impressive, to say the least.

The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November into January (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. Legendary’s chairman, Mary Parent, would state, “This (box office) is certainly an exciting result. We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds. These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.“
