A small revival for a tired genre
stensson28 July 2006
Does anyone really know how many movies have been done, using these characters created by Swedish crime writers Sjöwall/Wahlöö? These authors used to be very much to the political left. But times change. I would say they have sold out. Completely.

But never mind, "Beck-Skarpt Läge" is one of the better ones in this endless line of movies, using the policemen Beck and Larsson. They this time deal with wife abusers and obviously, the plot becomes more effective, when it is about so called everyday crime.

Rather exciting, even if you too soon get to know who the murderer is. Peter Haber and Mikael Persbrandt are not that tired in their acting performance. This is not for an international audience, but it's functioning in it's Swedish environment.

A light of hope for Swedish cinema
supercoool8927 August 2006
Having become much of an institution in Sweden, Sjöwall/Wahlöö's characters Martin Beck and Gunvald Larsson has seen a lot in their days on the silver screen since Mannen på Taket came sometime during the stone age. Especially the latest incarnation (for yes, just like James Bond, Martin Beck has been portrayed by several actors, as have Gunvald) have seen many ups and downs.

But entering the third and last season of Beck movies for the duo Haber/Persbrandt with Skarpt Läge has put the bar up high.

This is not a common Swedish movie. The dullness of the "diskbänskrealism" is gone, yet we never leave the frightening proximity of home as the plot evolves around spousal abuse.

Skarpt Läge delivers an experience of utter and sheer horror as well as action rarely seen in this cold country's cinemas. A joy, but it has its price - a look into the terrifying world of the victims suffering from a husband beating them gives repulsion a meaning. Uncomfortable, yet the film is captivating and even fun at times.

If you are to see a contemporary Swedish movie - skip the boring dramas and see this. Had the international audience seen Sweden as a film industry, this would be praised abroad. A shame it isn't, but a terrific film, none the less.

Warning: Spoilers
To follow from first episody you will learn better about this tv-movie. You need to go up when Mikael Persprandt debuted. There you will learn his character better. He looks tough and arrogant but in bottom of heart his heart is big. In this movie her sister refused his help because they haven´t seen each other since childhood years. Gunvald regrets it deeply and try to make a bond with his little sister. Parents abused them and Gunvald helpless left sister alone. Therefore sister hated him so much. Time healed they started to bond together but sister´s husband abused her so much, Sister denied any help even Gunvald suspected something is wrong. In Hospital sister very badly injured reached out her hand to Gunvald..they held hands together.I cried I cried...Mikael Persprandt did his work BRILLIANTLY. Look at his face...beautiful moment! Gunvald Larsson very important person with Beck. Gunvald looks tough but inside him he´s soft. I LOVE HIM
