As the director of The Fire I am probably both uniquely qualified and a somewhat biased person to comment on the picture. However, it might be interesting to some to hear the stories behind the making of the independent picture. I began with a simple concept for the script in 1999. It took basically 5 years to finish the script and get the funding together to turn it all into a movie. We cast the picture locally in North Texas in January of 2005 and began shooting in March. Many of our cast and crew had other projects going on concurrently; so much of the shooting was scheduled at night or on weekends. We wrapped principal photography at the end July. The editing process took three and a half months, and we screened it to the cast and crew in November of that same year. The Fire was a fun picture to make, and I think that that translates well to the audience. Russell Reynolds steals the show in many cases with over the top performances as Comstock the up and coming Drug Lord. Drew Waters (as Devon Malloy) endears himself to the audience despite the sad path he reluctantly chooses. The principal cast does a fantastic job creating a pretty unique story. Independent filmmakers rarely take such a stance as is taken with The Fire. The picture is not a horror film, and it doesn't have some socio-political message, or pet cause. It is what it is, and it's fun entertainment for 88 minutes. - C
