In the gray light of morning, Vicki (Alexandra Moltke) goes back to the basement of Collinwood, but the crying from last evening has ended. She encounters burly Thayer David (as Matthew Morgan), in his first of several distinctive "Dark Shadows" characterizations. This meeting is similar to the episode that introduced the departed George Mitchell in the caretaker role. Unlike his predecessor, Mr. David would become an invaluable member of the cast. Matthew thinks the sobbing could be the ghost of Josette Collins, but Liz attributes it to Collinwood creaking in the wind...
Loyal to Liz, Matthew advises Vicki to stay out of the basement. At the hotel restaurant, Carolyn (Nancy Barrett) finds Burke (Mitchell Ryan) reading Alexandre Dumas' revenge story "The Count of Monte Cristo" and they are served coffee by quiet Colleen Kelly (as Susie). Carolyn tries to arrange a date with Burke. Liz (Joan Bennett) finds more "Rover Boys" books for David and orders Vicki to stay out of the basement. Carolyn reveals she has also heard the ghostly sobbing. While Vicki tutors David, Liz tries to get in touch with Ned Calder. In town, Matthew threatens Burke...
