"Dig Up the Dead Bodies First"
wes-connors2 September 2011
At the hotel restaurant, Burke (Mitchell Ryan) discusses Malloy's disappearance with waitress Maggie (Kathryn Leigh Scott). With her car in the shop due to carburetor problems, Carolyn (Nancy Barrett) has coffee with Joe (Joel Crothers). They decide to end their recent quarreling and later share a kiss at Collinwood. Burke interrupts, looking for Roger. Worried about Malloy's disappearance, Maggie questions Sam (David Ford), who is working on Burke's portrait. The mystery surrounding Bill Malloy is partially overshadowed here - by the trouble Mr. Ryan has with his lines...

In spite of possible tragedy, romance has to go on.

Warning: Spoilers
The focus here is on the romance of Carolyn Stoddard and Joe Haskell, soap veterans Nancy Barrett and Joel Crothers in their first daytime roles. The disappearance of Bill Malloy is still on the burner, but it's backed up from the previous two episodes. Burke believes that either the unseen Roger or Sam Evans know what happened with Bill, but even Maggie can't get her father to admit anything.

Even on a gothic mystery soap, the edge of night brings out romance in the young characters, and for the future "Edge" leading man Joel Crothers, he's the focus of romance here. It's a chance to see the flighty Carolyn at her most vulnerable, and Nancy Barrett makes her complex character quite intriguing. Hints are abound that Bill may not be found, and that puts a damper on young love as well as the strong relationship between a father and daughter.

Filler episode

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 49 is another filler episode. Malloy has disappeared for sure, and everyone's talking about it, but nobody is doing anything. Meanwhile, there's some cheesy romance stuff between Carolyn and Joe which definitely isn't worth tuning in for, and Sam goes through the same old down-trodden routines. Burke remains the only fun character.
