A Magical Tale Perfect for Little Girls
pandykim17 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this movie was perfect for little girls. It was about a magical place where Genevieve and all her sisters could do what they wanted to do the most anytime they'd like. Most little girls would like this story, even though there is the thought of death in it. Although no one dies, the king almost does, but little girls would not understand it, so it adds up to make a perfect story. All the events add up, creating a great plot that can have a meaning if you dig deep enough. This story is perfect for little girls, and since it is a barbie movie, the kids can have more fun with it, especially if they have barbies of their own. Anyone can have fun with it, though, because it is so cute and understandable. Overall, I think this movie is a good movie for everyone, especially little girls, and will give anyone a smile at least once during it.

Very charming
TheLittleSongbird27 May 2012
I do get some pleasure out of the Barbie movies, and the 12 Dancing Princesses is no exception. The animation is mostly full of lovely colour, fluid backgrounds and nuanced facial expressions. True, the animation in the dance sequences is not very inspired, but none of it is bad as far I could see. The music is whimsical and catchy, the dialogue is decent with some fun moments even with some corniness, the story has a lot of charm and heart making an existing story fresh in terms of storytelling and while the characters are not much different from the types of characters from the previous Barbie movies they are likable still. The voice acting is solid from all involved. Overall, a very charming movie. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Cute...
RosanaBotafogo19 February 2023
When the evil Aunt Rowena moves into the castle, she forbids princesses to dance or sing forever, as she believes it is not the kind of behavior appropriate for a princess. The princesses discover a magical and secret palace to which they flee, but when Barbie learns that her aunt is plotting to rule the kingdom, she must go back to help her father, the king!

The dramas are always cute, although the graphic remains ugly, perhaps for the time not so much, clichés and nice, the scripts do not escape the commonplace, but enchant by the Barbie magic of being and the cute little children, despite being repetitive, I don't care I'm tired of watching the sequels, there are still a few to go, I find them even cuter today than a few years ago, they still entertain me...

Charming and well-animated
peace9-12 November 2006
This is a nicely-done story with pretty music, lots of dancing, lots of big sister/little sister interaction (almost all of it positive), and lots of wishes granted. There are funny moments that older children and adults will enjoy, such as when King Randolph exclaims, "They're just SHOES! Aren't they?" And tender moments such as when Princess Genevieve comforts her youngest sister, Lacey, after a blunder.

The animation is perhaps not as good as Disney, but it still is very good. The facial expressions are nuanced, particularly for Genevieve, King Randolph, Duchess Rowena and her servant, Derek the cobbler, and little Princess Lacey. My only quibble on the animation is in the dance sequences where the dancing princesses become absolute carbon copies of each other without the slightest deviation -- even the three youngest copy the dance steps perfectly. I would have liked to see a little more individualism in the dancing, considering that these girls are not professional ballerinas or chorus dancers.

The resolution of the story is handled cleverly to get rid of a villainess without actually hurting her. There is some violence done to guards in the story, and the villainess's monkey is mean to other animals in the story.

My 4-year-old daughter loves this movie and has watched it repeatedly, and I have found it to be quite acceptable for her to watch.

Genevive and her 11 sisters find themselves thrown into a world without color or fun, but they find an escape where they can dance all night.
rachel_efy_200021 September 2006
This movie was very cute and totally little girl appropriate. My nieces have watched it non-stop since they've gotten it, and as a result I've seen it nearly 4 times all the way through. I can't get enough of it. The CGI images are great to watch, the humor is good, and the ballet portrayals are excellent. Although the story line has a few holes, no little girl will pick up on them, and as an adult, the movie is so charming that one hardly even notices. Just keep in mind that it is a Barbie movie, and, though cheesy at times, in my experience, this one lives up to the high standard which the other Barbie princess movies have set for it. I would recommend this to anyone who has a little girl who has always wanted to be a princess. It teaches a good lesson as well. Everyone is special and different in their own way, and everyone can make a difference.

Good for Girls and Boys
jolene-215 January 2007
I feel that this movie is different from so many others in that it shows a family of girls who actually care about each other. They may have faults, but bitterness and put-downs have no place with these girls. Try to find that on TV or in the usual movies. It is a breath of fresh air to see girls being feminine--wearing beautiful, feminine dresses and shoes. Contrast that with the apparel in stores today, i.e. raggedy and faded jeans and jackets, etc. The story line has an evil thread running through but that is what makes it more realistic and interesting. I know that it is animated, but it still gives you a feeling that families can stick together and come out okay. I would recommend this movie for boys and girls alike.

Not sure if I like this one...

Warning: Spoilers
My 4YO and 2YO love this movie. It does help a little that my oldest has the same name as Barbie in this movie. :) We've only just gotten into the Barbie movies as they've gone on clearance, they usually have pretty twisted morals. Not sure if I'd rather have that than the boy saves girl of the original stories. Anyway, this one has rubbed me the wrong way. The duchess that comes in and tries to make them "princesses" is only enforcing normal rules... like bedtime and punctuality. (Some of the same things I try to enforce at home.) Okay... and then she tries to kill their dad off, that's bad. But my kids don't really understand the whole death thing, so for them it seems like everyone's upset that the duchess is making them follow rules and be considerate of others...

Hmm... other than that, its not so bad.

Perfect for young girls
blue_dragon_5124 November 2006
I have a 4yr old daughter, and before this movie she was all about the Disney princesses, now she watched this movie and all she can talk about is Princess Genevieve, and all her sisters. I definitely recommend this movie for all young girls. This movie is one of the best from the Barbie collection. It shows all the good values that any mother would love to encourage on there little girls. With the great songs and dance moves, it gets my daughter up and trying to mimic the moves. The extras are also good, one even works on how good your memory is. I would definitely have say it is a must see for kids and grown-ups alike.

Barbie is so perfect.
alanisdsc5 July 2022
Twelve princess sisters love to dance, play and sing. But when their father, the king, finds it inappropriate and wants his daughters to behave like princesses, he asks his cousin, the Duchess Rowena, to discipline the sisters. Its first law is to stop girls from doing everything that is not considered "princess-like", like dancing, singing and playing. On the triplets' birthday, they receive a book that belonged to their mother and discover that, by dancing in their room, a magical world opens up where they can do everything that is forbidden in the castle.

It is in an animation/family movie, scripted by Elana Lesser, Cliff Ruby and directed by Greg Richardson, Terry Klassen and it was released on September 10, 2006 with 1 hour 23 minutes.

It's a beautiful movie, both for children and adults, besides presenting very beautiful songs composed by Arnie Roth I particularly love all the old movies from the Barbie collection, they have a story that captivates you and makes you want to watch more. It also makes me feel nostalgic. I highly recommend everyone to watch it, it is a great movie to watch eating candy. I'm even going to watch it for the umpteenth time.

The movie that makes me think in be a ballet dancer <3

Warning: Spoilers
This awesome movie could look like a kid's movie and in part it is, but you can watch it with all the family and all the members will learn something from this. Is an astonishing story that I enjoyed since the first time with the most light-hearted combination of music, dance, love and a lot of family values. Is a fantasy movie with funny moments but with a weak point in its graphics and design characters, it's possible to see how the main characters are a copy and little changes like the hair or dress color. It shows us the story of the King Randolph who ruefully lost her wife and in the middle of his loneliness tries to educate his twelve daughters but, he can't, the sweet princesses have improper behaviors for their position and in the other kingdoms are refused; all this situations makes that Randolph takes the worst decision, asks for the help of the Duchess Rowena, his cousin; since this moment all change, all the happiness, music and colors became darkness and silence. But not even this achieve to separate the sisters, they always stay linked and are the support for each one until they make things better for all their family. Is a magic story full of teachings, it introduces topics like the death, the familiar union, the love between father-daughters and between sisters, the sacrifice, the friendship and the romantic love. Finally, the mix music-dance is awe-inspiring, you just can watch and enjoy the choreography and the synchrony of everything, and after of this inspired experience you will want became a ballet dancer (or at least it happens to me all the times that I watch the movie).

The best Barbie Film I've ever watched.
XueHuaBingYu18 May 2019
Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses is the best Barbie film I've ever watched. I love the opening music very much. The choreography is great and also performances of the voice artists are very good. So that it turned out to be the best one.

This film is flawless, making my review shorter than usual. So, to conclude my review, I love this one very much and no matter how people are saying this is very bad or something like that, as for me, it's the best of Barbie films.

Best barbie film

Warning: Spoilers
As someone who watched as a little kid,it still holds up,The animation was pretty cool if a little mushy (in color sorta). This film successfully uses foreshadowing from the duchess serving the king tea which is later revealed to be poison,to the princesses using their abilities they were given at the beginning of the film. The choreography is greatest that I've ever seen and it actually serves to the plot,The Villain is also not shallow and goes from somwwhat of a jerk to a complete psychopath and it never felt forced, she wants the kingdom to herself and won't let anyone in her way.I also liked the rivalry between the monkey and the cat as it felt like a brother sister rivalry vibe Overall,it's a good film Also to the people mentioning how its "too scary" and it "has too much consumerism" shut up,being scary isn't a bad thing and consumerism doesn't affect a film's quality, just look at the Lego Movie I'd out this film on my top 5 for sure

Its was and entertaining movie

Warning: Spoilers
This is a new Barbie movie. The graphics were really good. They made the movie seem partially realistic. I used to do ballet and this movie made me want to continue it. This movie was kind of like a Cinderella movie but a little bit different. A father of 12 princesses gets very sick. His cousin poisons him and wants the throne. The girls find a secret magical land thanks to their dead mother's stories. Its up to them to save their father and society. With the help of their handsome prince. It was a funny movie and me and my friend had fun watching it. We enjoyed it a lot and also enjoyed the Indian talking parrot. The music was very nice and made the movie even greater. It had a great classical orchestra. The voices were great and the characters were adorably sweet and cute. I liked it so enjoy the movie its great for the family. All in all I'd watch it again.

Beautiful, Engaging and Unexpected
mnttrekker-7621010 April 2018
I love this movie, especially all the little details and subplots-- such as the monkey, and I'm an old man! It's sure to be loved by little girls (and probably most boys too). I've tested it out on the little girls in my family, or vice versa, to be precise.

If you don't like classical music, in particular Mendelssohn, then this might not be your cup of tea.

I like the portrayal of the princesses as not being so stereotypically girly.

It is very rare for me to reward a movie with a "10."

Dark for a kid's movie 😨
dvadervader2 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I walked into this movie expecting it to be fun and happy and colourful. I am a young adult who's never seen this before. And it is in the beginning, colourful and fun. The plot is good. The music is 💯 The dynamic between the sisters is fun. I love the lore It gets depressing quick though. In my opinion, this is rather dark for a kid's film. Spoilers: the villain forces them to wear gray outfits, robbing them of their joy and identity, and is just a wicked, scheming character. I prefer villains like Preminger who, while dark, add a bit of comic relief. She was just straight up evil. I was invested in the storyline, so it was hard to watch the princesses be mistreated. I thought it was going to be a fun dancing film. The magic land was cool and was the redeeming point of the movie (as well as the male lead) for me. Without spoiling too much, in my opinion, this movie needs a PG-13 warning as content can be dark for little kids (to be fair, it probably goes over their heads). I was satisfied with the happy ending but traumatized 😂 (no seriously) by the time the movie was over. Sheesh! #emotionaldamage.

I didn't grow up with this movie, but I really wish I did. It has a great story, the animation, while a bit rubbery, is still pretty good for 2006, and the music is stellar. Definite recommend.
