- Faith's unannounced visit to her wealthy Uncle Rex's estate turns into quite a surprise. When Rex's body turns up, his would-be heirs engage in a battle of wills that exposes plenty of motives for murder.
- Faith Alexander returns with husband Alan to native Midsomer Deverell after four decades away to meet her long-lost uncle rich Rex Masters (80) in his lavish mansion but are shocked to discover Rex's friends were told she died in a plane crash. Then Rex is found drowned in the nearby river. Barnaby and Jones struggle to workout who wished 'amiable prankster' Rex dead but soon find he kept tricking people into free services. Niece Faith, gardener Miles King and housekeeper-cook Eileen Carnack and cleaner Janet Bailey each counted on a version of Rex's last will to inherit his fortune, ignoring their rivals, so each had motive believing to be the sole beneficiary. Jeremy Thacker wrote a book to promote his late mother a candidate for sainthood but claims Rex was the mystery man whose sexual abuse damaged her as a maiden. With two more murders the detectives investigate if the motive could be just envy, greed, passion or some revenge.—KGF Vissers
- When Faith Alexander arrives in Midsomer Deverell to meet her long-lost uncle Rex Masters, she is surprised to find he has disappeared and told everyone she was killed in a plane crash. Then Rex's body is found in the weir, and his friends produce wills, each claiming to inherit his fortune. But what is the truth about Rex's life of mischief-making, and who wanted him dead?—Anonymous
- Faith Alexander travels to Midsomer Deverell to visit her uncle Rex Masters, whom she has not seen in 40 years and learns that he is missing. She also learns that he had told everyone that she and her entire family had been killed in a plane crash the year before. When Rex's body is fished out of the nearby river, Chief Inspector Barmaby and DS Jones investigate if it was murder or possibly suicide. Faith believed that she would inherit Rex's estate based on a will he had drawn up some 4 years earlier. Soon however, it's learned that Rex was apt to change his will as it suited him with Miles King the gardener, Eileen Carnack the housekeeper and Janet Bailey the cleaner all in possession of a will leaving them the entire estate. While only the most recent version is legally binding, it does mean that several people thought they had something to gain by Rex's death. As well, Rex had quite a reputation as a free spirit so it may not only be those with a will who wanted him dead. There will be two other murders however before Barnaby puts it all together.—garykmcd
