On the day before the release of Homi Adajania’s quirky crime comedy ‘Murder Mubarak’ on Netflix, Sanjay Kapoor, who plays Rannvijay in the film, has revealed that he holds the rights to Rishi Kapoor’s 1975 film, ‘Khel Khel Mein’, and wanted to produce a remake of it with Adajania as director.
“Homi actually has been on my bucket list for a very long time,” Kapoor said, adding that he plans to produce the remake “in the future”.

Zoya Akhtar is no stranger to contradiction.
The Indian writer, producer, and director grew up in a film family, the daughter of poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar and child star-turned screenwriter Honey Irani. She grew up surrounded by the arts and was poised to enter the Hindi film industry — but when the time came to make her first feature, it took years.
“It took me a really long time to get a movie made in India, and I’m from the industry, so I had access to everybody,” Akhtar told IndieWire in New York City. “It was because I wanted to make a film like ‘Luck by Chance.’ It wasn’t the norm. People weren’t doing ensembles at that time. People weren’t gray as characters, male actors didn’t wanna play a character that was gray. They didn’t get the irony of the film, in a sense.

Over the 21st century, Bollywood cinema has entered into a completely different era of filmmaking and storytelling than was being made in the decades prior. Actors and directors who started their careers in the ‘80s and ‘90s have experienced such a drastic shift from their beginnings to what they are doing now that their older works seem almost archaic and unrecognizable. This has led, expectedly, to many of Bollywood’s artists making self-reflexive work that also reflects on the industry in general––Fan, Sanju, The Dirty Picture, Luck By Chance, and Shamitabh are just a few examples. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Ak vs Ak is the latest and best of the lot.
One of India’s most interesting filmmakers, Motwane’s movies are constantly in dialogue with both India’s cinematic past and its socio-political present. In his latest offering, he dives headfirst to deconstruct Bollywood’s cinematic identity crisis, where...

The trailer of Ak vs Ak is out now, and while the audience is loving the style of Anil Kapoor, his co-star Anurag Kashyap, a popular director, is getting lauded for his acting skills too.
Ak vs Ak is not Anurag's first film as an actor, and he certainly is not the first Bollywood director to come in front of the camera.
Here's a list of present day directors who took on the challenge of being an actor for their own films or others':
Anurag Kashyap
He will be seen as a filmmaker who kidnaps the daughter of a filmstar in Vikramaditya Motwane's upcoming film "Ak vs Ak". He had also appeared as a cop in "Ghoomketu" directed by Pushpendra Nath Misra. Prior to this, he had acted as corrupt police officer, Acp Rane, in "Akira", directed by Ar Murugadoss. It is an exceptionally windy night. Monsoon has shown its face and the raindrops are dramatically falling over everywhere. Sitting in a car, Sanjay Mishra’s elderly character is leaning over his window. There are all blues and blacks outside and you see this actor as a sort of maniacal joker in his own narrative. There’s this uncanny visual similarity with The Dark Knight and a feeling that you just can’t dust off. A person that has been ridiculed with an absolute apathy by society – a misunderstood freak struggling to understand the purpose of all the years he has spent on the earth – that’s the common thread. Being Kaamyaab (Successful) has always been a wish of this protagonist from ‘Kaamyaab’. The film, which was a part of last year’s Mami film festival, finally gets a wide theatrical release in India.
Sanjay Mishra plays Sudheer, the protagonist of this film.

In what has become a fruitful collaborative partnership, four of India's top directors have come together to create a brand new horror anthology for Netflix called Ghost Stories. This latest endeavor sees all four of its filmmakers venturing into horror for the first time ever. While Kashyap is well known as India's foremost genre film icon, his films have never quite eked over the thin line between thriller and horror. Karan Johar is best know...

Eminent Indian filmmaker Zoya Akhtar’s new film, “Gully Boy,” had its world premiere at Berlin as part of the Berlinale Special screenings strand.
Set in Mumbai’s Dharavi area, one of Asia’s largest slums, the film is loosely based on the lives of street rappers Divine and Naezy, whose music Akhtar first heard in 2014. Akhtar is known for her successful dramas set among the world of the hyper-wealthy in films such as “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” (2011) and “Dil Dhadakne Do” (2015) or in elite Bollywood circles such as her debut feature, “Luck by Chance” (2009). “Gully Boy” marks a significant departure in milieu for the filmmaker.
“It’s not so much the theme as the world and the music that is attractive to me,” Akhtar says. “Thematically, the same kind of story that I end up making, which is coming of age, finding your voice, it is similar. It is...

Parting is such sweet sorrow and none more so than to see the end of the 2017 London Indian Film Festival. After a rollercoaster week’s worth of films, we saw the closing of the London portion of the festival at the BFI Southbank with the English premiere of Sexy Durga.
The night began with a star-studded red carpet event. BollySpice was on hand to mix with the movers and shakers of the Festival. In particular, we caught up with executive and programming director Cary Rajinder Sawhney who had promised at the beginning of the run that this year would be the best ever. We asked him whether he stood by that comment. “In terms of the films? Yes, this has been the best ever. We had such a good selection of films, many from other festivals where they have won awards.”
There were many famous names from the Festival line-up who graced the red carpet.

Farhan Akhtar started his acting career in 2008 [Rock On], followed it up with Luck By Chance in 2009, experimented with Karthik Calling Karthik [2010] and then hit a high with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara [2011]. Post that, he delivered a major hit with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag [2013].
Another interesting factor about Farhan and his Bollywood career is the fact that in his nine films that have released in last eight years, he has always seen a new leading lady opposite him. This is what makes Rock On 2 special since this time around, he is paired with a new leading lady, Shraddha Kapoor.
Rock On!! – Prachi Desai Luck By Chance – Konkona Sen Sharma Karthik Calling Karthik – Deepika Padukone Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara – Ariadna Cabrol Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – Sonam Kapoor Shaadi Ke Side Effects – Vidya Balan Dil Dhadakne Do – Priyanka Chopra Wazir – Aditi Rao Hydari Rock On 2 – Shraddha Kapoor

A tale of love, Mirzya, which hits theaters Friday, explores the tragic folktale of Mirza and Sahiban both in the world of folklore and in modern Rajasthan in 2016. The story, presented in a very unique way, weaves in and out of the love of Mirza-Sahiban of the folk tale and the characters of today. The Ae Dil Hai Mushkil cast is getting bigger and even more exciting by the minute. If Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Anushka Sharma coming together in a Karan Johar film was not good enough already, Fawad Khan was added to the mix.
Now we hear that there is another amazing cast memeber that will be making a special cameo! The film director, Karan Johar, has confirmed that Shah Rukh Khan will be making a guest appearance in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
At the Toronto International Film Festival Karan Johar said, “Shah Rukh and I have an amazing working rapport. I haven’t directed a film with him in the last seven years, but he did a scene for me recently in a film that is going to release in Diwali and after seven years when I directed him, I realised nothing had changed. By now, we all know that Shah Rukh Khan is playing a dwarf in the much talked about Aanand L Rai's untitled film. Although Shah Rukh Khan has been finalised as the film's leading man, there were no details available about the film's heroine. If the buzz is to be believed, then, the film's heroine will be none other than Kareena Kapoor Khan, who has apparently given the nod for the film, but is yet to sign the dotted lines. Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, who were last seen in Ra.One, have together done films like Luck By Chance, Don, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Asoka amongst others. While repeated attempts to reach Aanand L. Rai to confirm the news proved futile, do watch this space for developments.

Zoya Akhtar’s latest film – narrated by a dog with Aamir Khan’s voice – takes a while to set sail, but steers its wealthy family on a voyage of self-discovery
It must be Bollywood’s silly season. Last month’s Piku structured itself around the constipated Amitabh Bachchan’s inability to pass solids; now Dil Dhadakne Do, the latest crowdpleaser from writer-director Zoya Akhtar (Luck by Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara) sees the misadventures of a family of one-percenters narrated by a dog with Aamir Khan’s voice. Seeing as this family is weighing up whether to sell off their private jet, we arguably need a closer point of identification; this humble pooch, balefully observing his masters’ follies, will for a while be the most sympathetic presence on screen.
We meet the Mehras as they embark upon a 10-day Bosphorus cruise, organised by industrialist patriarch Kamal (Anil Kapoor) to celebrate...

Ok, so ‘achche din’ are here at the multiplexes. Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Gabbar Is Back and Piku have done good business at the box office. If Gabbar Is Back took the best opening of the year, Tanu Weds Manu grew from strength to strength and is still bringing in audience. As for Piku, it had the lowest opening amongst the three and still managed to sustain very well based on word of mouth. At this time, when audience is back in mood to watch films, the arrival of Dil Dhadakne Do is good news indeed as it has the kind of ingredients that warrant good footfalls in theaters.
First and foremost, it is a true multi-starrer that is hitting the screens after a really long time. Moreover, it has a director (Zoya Akhtar) at the helm of affairs who has always taken a different path and has made an...

What is it about Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment that puts off Saif Ali Khan and his begum Kareena Kapoor Khan?
Saif has not done a film with Excel since Dil Chahta Hai in 2001. In 2008, Farhan offered Saif a film called Voice From The Sky. However, they disagreed in the remuneration and the film never got made.
Now, after 7 years, Excel offered Saif Ali Khan another film, Reema Kagti's Mr. Chaloo. Saif seemed very excited, as he often seems about many assignments. Then, he lost interest because they didn't agree on price. This loss of interest, says a producer who has been a victim, is also typical of Saif.
One hopes for the talented Reema Kagti's sake that a replacement hero is found very soon.
Kareena Kapoor, too had a fair share of almost-done-it projects with Farhan and Ritesh. Except for a cameo in Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance,...

The title of Sulemani Keeda, a tale of two struggling young screenwriters in Mumbai, is Hindi for pain in the rear and may also allude to a keeda (or an idea) that just won’t go away. It is probably intended as a meta comment on the film itself as reports have it that the script was lying in the can for years before finally seeing the light of the day. And it’s also equally true that many commercially successful Hindi film directors may view these struggling artists who constantly badger them for a break, as a pain in the ***.
Sulemani Keeda is a cleverly crafted Indie comedy that a certain section of Mumbai residents will instantly identify with and admire. This segment (and it’s a fairly large one) happens to be the familiar breed of “creative types” who want to make it big in the Hindi film industry.

Last Sunday saw the grand finale of the popular musical reality show India’s RAWStar on Star Plus. The episode started with a recap and highlights of the previous 14 weeks. The shows original mentor YoYo Honey Singh also featured in the highlights. The show opened with the finalists Darshan Raval singing ‘Mast Magan’ from 2 States, Rituraj singing ‘Arz Allah’ from Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Mohit sang ‘Tharki Chokro’ from Pk. The three of them then sang ‘Indiawaale’ from Happy New Year.

We are back with another look at what happened on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa! This week’s show opened with the international judge Maksim Chmerkovskiy dancing to the song ‘Criminal’ from Ra One. The audience really loved his performance, as it was the first time Maksim had danced solo on the show.
Host Ranvir, then tricked the contestants into a “pass the parcel” game, by throwing them a mirror ball and saying that whoever caught the ball, would go directly into the face-off. But judge Karan Johar used his “jhoothameter” and said that Ranvir was fooling around, the mirror ball would say who was safe from the eliminations.
This week’s theme was Made in India which meant the contestants would be performing on dance styles that originated from India.
Actor Ashish Sharma & his choreographer Shampa were the first to perform. They danced on the song ‘Har Kisi Ko Nahin Milta’ from the film Boss.

While speculations are on the rise about Farhan doing a role in Zoya's next, the actor recently revealed that he is indeed doing the film. Zoya's next will see Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh playing the role of siblings as the film is based on the brother-sister relationship. Not divulging many details about his role in this family drama, Farhan recently said that he will be shooting the film along with Dev Benegal's Bombay Samurai but there won't be any overlap since his look in both the films are drastically different. Also putting an end to all the rumors about this film being based on his real life, Farhan cleared the air by stating that the film has nothing to do with his relationship with Zoya. This will be Farhan's third venture with sister Zoya after films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Luck By Chance.

Prediction came true to the T as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag indeed had an average occupancy of 60% by the time Friday came to a close. It was Paid Previews for the ‘aam junta’ that gave a good indication of what would unfold in days to come as 1.5 crores came in from the evening/night shows on Thursday itself. Soon after, the word of mouth started spreading around this Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film being a quality product. Friday footfalls did the rest and by the time the day came to a close, it was a given that the film had done well.
This was evidenced from the fact that Saturday and Sunday saw further escalation, hence resulting in the first weekend collections in an excess of 31 crores. With this, in one stroke, Farhan Akhtar has managed his biggest solo success till date. Also, in the process the film has comfortably surpassed the...

Every country has its sports heroes. For India, one of the greatest is Milkha Singh, The Flying Sikh. Singh was, for a time in the late '50s and early '60s, one of the fastest men in the world in the 400 meter race. He competed in two Olympics, heavily favored to win the event, and came home empty-handed both times. If you're not Indian, this is probably all you know, if anything at all, of Milkha Singh. Director, producer, writer, chat show host, reality dance show judge: Karan Johar’s CV could rival that of the very best in showbiz. But the one thing the 41-year-old hasn’t done — a few cameos aside — is take up a serious acting role. Now, that is set to change.
Three days back, Karan decided to take up an offer to act in Anurag Kashyap’s next, Bombay Velvet (Bv). Karan says the offer “came out of the blue”. In the film, he will be seen playing the “antagonist” opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

And all the cast members — besides Ranbir and Anushka (Sharma, lead actress) — have strong roles in Anurag’s film. Since I’m playing an antagonist, there are shades of grey to my character.
