When Roy is in the barn with Nathan he puts a crate of jars onto a shelf, above Nathan's head. He stops to mention going on a camping trip to Nathan. Next you see him putting one of two sacks, which were on the ground moments ago, up onto that high shelf. The second one is up there already and the crate of jars is now pushed neatly to the left.
When Nathan meets Roy's mother, she asks if he goes to the Baptist church. Nathan says yes. But when Nathan is seen in church with his family and the preacher reads about Judas's betrayal, there is a large crucifix on the church wall. A second large crucifix is seen on the wall in Nathan's bedroom. Baptist doctrine denounces the use of crucifixes, and no Louisiana Baptist of the 1970s would have one in either their church or home. They are, however, quite common in Roman Catholic churches and homes in Louisiana.
The story is set in the 1970s, but the car shown in the opening scenes is a Buick Roadmaster station wagon, which was produced from 1991 to 1996. Also, the refrigerator shown is a modern model, not one from the 70s.
The school bus used in the film is the sixth generation Ford B-Series with rectangular capsule headlights in production from 1980 to 1986. The film takes place in the late 1970s.
