This is set in WWII, not WWI before the October Revolution. In the first episode the cadets are part of the Soviet Army. Their unit has a Soviet Political Officer attached. When the cadets get drunk they talk about taking planes to Berlin to capture Hitler and are later bombed by the Luftwaffe. Just wanted to let perspective viewers know this. So far, after watching the first part the series is pretty well made with rather straightforward directing and a convincing young cast. The simple storytelling (built around the narration of one of the characters later in life) works well here to craft a modest believable tale. In my opinion, many of the modern Russian war films I have seen tend to clutter themselves with their attempts to make the film "more epic". I give this one a thumbs up.
