Zack earlier stated this was a gesture of approval between an older man and a younger man - which makes sense later when the priest's identity is revealed.
Because of filming curfews in downtown Los Angeles, the opening scene with a burning body had to be filmed in the day rather than a night. A technique called 'day for night' was used to make the change.
