Ann is making the move from small town Brewster in upstate New York, to New York City to pursue her acting career. While her mother Helen is concerned but allowing, her father Lew is on the verge of forbidding her to go. Ann assures them that she has a nice apartment - where she eventually befriends her next door neighbor Judy Bessemer - and that her agent, Harvey Peck, has lined up a probable acting job for her. Her excitement about that acting job wanes a bit when she learns that it is as a mop in a children's television show. Ann's already busy life in the city with fixing up her apartment, preparing for the acting job and her part time job as a waitress takes a back seat when her mother arrives in the city unannounced to stay with her. Despite its outward appearance, Helen's visit is in support of Ann. Ann has to figure out a way to get her mother to support her from Brewster instead, which means the help of her father.
