- As Fog, Rigodon and Tico begin their journey, Mr Sullivan hires a cunning saboteur called Transfer to stop them; Inspector Dix and Constable Bully also go after Fog believing he is a criminal.
- Wesson is the owner of the "Morning Chronicle", the newspaper which printed the article Fog described to his colleagues at the Reform Club. When he tells Ralph, the squirrel who wrote the article, about Fog's planned expedition, Ralph is excited to hear that his article has actually inspired someone to try and go around the world in eighty days. Wesson, though he is one of those who have bet against Fog, quickly sees a chance to sell more newspapers.
At Fog's house, Rigodon and Tico, having finished the housework and believing they have two hours before Fog returns, go up to their room to take a rest. Tico asks Rigodon when he plans to tell Fog about him. In reply, Rigodon says he kept Tico hidden because Fog might not have been willing to hire both of them; now, Rigodon is waiting until the time is right to introduce Tico and Fog to each other. Just then, Rigodon and Tico hear the former's name being called, but Rigodon says it can't be Fog since he knows Fog is not due home yet. Seconds later, the call comes again, confirming that it was Fog's voice Rigodon and Tico heard.
Rigodon hurries downstairs to greet Fog, who tells him they will shortly be leaving to go on a trip around the world. Hearing this, Rigodon (who had hoped he would never have to travel again, much less travel around the world) runs up to his room, ranting and raving all the way. Tico, however, can't wait to be on the road again, but Rigodon, still riled, says Tico is not coming on the trip. As Rigodon tries to placate Tico, Fog calls to him, telling him to hurry up; while Rigodon's back is turned, Tico stows away in the bag. Downstairs, Fog has taken a large quantity of banknotes out of his safe and hands them to Rigodon to carry in the bag during the trip.
Meanwhile, Sullivan is determined make sure Fog loses the wager and hires a cunning master of disguise, a wolf known as Transfer, to sabotage the expedition. Elsewhere, a special edition of the "Morning Chronicle" which contains news of Fog's journey has been printed. Bully and Dix, sent to look for the suspect in the robbery at the Bank of England, have just bought a copy when Dix notices that Fog, whose picture is on the front page, resembles the artist's sketch of the robber. Dix is convinced that Fog is the thief and that the trip around the world is a smokescreen to allow him to flee the country with the money he stole. But Rowan tells Dix and Bully that Fog cannot be arrested without proof and orders the pair to trail Fog and look for the proof they need before they arrest him.
At Charing Cross, a large crowd has gathered to see Fog off. But Fog has not yet arrived and Sullivan, joining the other members of the Reform Club, says he suspects Fog won't turn up at all and will claim it was all a joke. Just then, however, a shout goes up from the crowd; Fog has arrived. Fog greets his colleagues, before he and Rigodon (with Tico in the bag) board the train. Moments later, Dix and Bully come hurrying onto the platform and just manage to jump onto the train as it pulls out of the station, accompanied by the cheers of the crowd. During the journey, Rigodon suddenly realises he has forgotten to extinguish the gas lamp in his room, meaning it will burn non-stop until the travellers return home; Fog says the cost will be deducted from Rigodon's wages.
Arriving in Dover, the travellers cross the English Channel by ferry, unaware that Dix and Bully are following them. As the ferry approaches the coast of France, Dix is growing increasingly frustrated that he has been unable to find any evidence against Fog. Bully, meanwhile, is suffering from a bout of sea-sickness, a problem which will recur on other vessels.
Later, the travellers are on the train to Paris when the conductor (a bear) approaches them and asks if they would mind sharing their compartment with a "young lady". The "lady" (a doe) claims "she" asked to be moved after "she" was harassed by two male travellers in another compartment. "She" then asks Fog where he and Rigodon are going; Fog tells "her" they are travelling around the world and the "lady" asks if "she" can travel with them as far as Brindisi, where "she" is going to visit "her" widowed aunt. Claiming to need a rest, "she" gets up to turn down the lamp in the compartment, but turns it down too far and plunges the compartment into darkness. Fog tells Rigodon to get the matches out of the bag so the lamp can be reignited, but when Rigodon reaches for the bag, he discovers that the "lady" has already opened it. A brief struggle ensues, culminating in a loud scream from the "lady", whom Tico has bitten.
Fog reignites the lamp as Rigodon picks himself up off the floor of the compartment. The "lady" has disappeared and Fog demands to know what Rigodon did to make "her" scream. Rigodon insists he did nothing and that he is as puzzled by "her" behaviour as Fog. Just then, the conductor comes to investigate the scream, but Fog says he and Rigodon are fine. The "lady" turns out to be Transfer, who sucks his finger where Tico bit him and vows to get Fog sooner or later.
