Witnesses Cost Extra

Warning: Spoilers
Charles Breedon is a defence solicitor who seems to be a bit too successful in getting his clients off.

Supt. George Grover believes that Breedon has been nobbling the jury, even the trial judges. All for charging his clients a little bit extra for this special service.

Harriet Peterson is willing to prosecute Breedon and his associate. It seems an undercover policewoman was placed in Breedon's office.

There was a lot of fireworks in court between Harriet and defence counsel Sir John Gallagher (Philip Stone.)

There are serious concerns shown by the judge over the antics of the police and Harriet. Reference is made to Hitler. The police rounding up defence lawyers and infiltrating their offices with spies.

The ending might be regarded as a damp squib. Breedon is shown to be shady, greedy but it was always likely he would be found not guilty. The witnesses against him in court were all lags and proven liars.

I can see why Harriet had concerns. I did wonder if she could had taken a leaf out of Stone's book and just got on with the job.

There are several references in this episode about Harriet's sex. This was an era where female barristers would had been fewer in number.

It did bring to mind something that came to light in post apartheid South Africa. It seems several human rights lawyers who dealt with ANC activists were actual police informants.
