Warner Bros. is moving forward with their animated feature film adaptation of The Jetsons and they've hired Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon to develop the project. Vernon also co-directed films such as Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. He also provided the voice of Gingerbread Man in Shrek.
WB has been developing The Jetsons for awhile now and in 2015 they hired Matt Lieberman to write the script. Lieberman is also writing the Short Circuit remake. Robert Rodriguez was originally attached to the project, but he no longer has any involvement.

Christina Hodson and Lindsey Beer have become the latest, and first female, writers to join the 'think tank' devoted to expanding Paramount's "Transformers" franchise with further sequels and spin-offs.
The pair join a group that includes Robert Kirkman ("The Walking Dead"), Art Marcum and Matt Holloway ("Iron Man"), Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari ("Ant-Man"), Zak Penn ("Ready Player One") and Jeff Pinkner ("Lost"). Akiva Goldsman leads the group which aims to have the fifth film's script done soon and will follow that with multiple "Transformers" projects afterwards.
Hudson was recently announced as the writer of "The Fugitive" remake and has made it onto the annual Black List three times for three different scripts so far. Beer is attached to "Short Circuit" and "Wizard of Oz" remakes in the works, along with Disney's adventure tale "Dig".
It's not known which film specifically the pair are working on at this point.

The Transformers writer’s room being assembled by Akiva Goldsman to expand the Paramount franchise into a cinematic universe has come under fire already for a lack of diversity, but today brings news that two female screenwriters have joined the burgeoning team. Christina Hodson and Lindsey Beer have joined the group that will hatch ideas for Transformers sequels, prequels and spinoffs before breaking into smaller groups to write them.
Both scribes are making waves in Hollywood. Hodson is penning an update of The Fugitive for Warner Bros. and also wrote The Eden Project, which Sony is developing, and thriller Shut In, which just wrapped production with Naomi Watts in the lead role and Farren Blackburn directing. She has also dabbled in television, writing CBS’ Unforgettable and working on an untitled pilot for FX.

Ryan Heppe, producer of the upcoming Short Circuit remake, has snared the rights to a little-known Marvel comics property Crash Ryan. Heppe will join forces with writer David Cowper to develop a script, although as yet there are no details on whether a financier has stepped forward to usher it onto the big screen.
Per Variety who dropped the news, Crash Ryan takes place “in an alternate 1935 in a world of super airplanes and giant flying airports. Crash Ryan is a pilot caught up in the battle between the heroic United Airmen and the forces of evil, led by a masked world conqueror who calls himself “the Doom.””
At this early stage, the two scribes have so far penned a 50-page outline. Titled Crash Ryan and the Eyes of Lemuria, it is poised to reinvent the original story as an “earthbound, steampunk-inspired fusion of Indiana Jones and “Star Wars.”” That...

With Peanuts looking better with every new trailer, Warner Bros. is plotting a feature-length return for another classic cartoon – Hanna-Barbera series The Jetsons.
Hoping to transform the beloved show, about a family living in a futuristic utopia filled with fantastical technology, into an animated theatrical feature, the studio has hired Matt Lieberman to pen a script. Word is that Warner Bros. was impressed with Lieberman’s work on an animated Scooby-Doo project that it is putting together, and that’s what landed him this gig.
Lieberman, who honed his skills in the Disney Writers Program, has been everywhere in Hollywood recently. He penned spec script 12/24, a found-footage Santa Claus movie that 1492 scooped up; another spec called The Pet, which Disney has set Napoleon Dynamite helmer Jared Hess to direct; Paramount Animation’s Giant Monsters Attack Japan; sci-fi Short Circuit, which Alvin and the Chipmunks director Tim Hill has signed on to helm; Mr.

I’ve wanted a live-action movie of The Jetsons for decades. In the late ’80s, when a lot of my favorite cartoons were heading to the big screen in one form or another, the trend was disappointingly more for animated features, basically extended episodes of what we saw on TV. I recall being a peeved kid. Even though the Masters of the Universe movie was terrible, something I knew at 10 years old, and even though I knew some of these projects couldn’t be worked out in live-action — DuckTales, in particular (though back then I might not have minded it using costumes a la Howard the Duck) — the futuristic world of The Jetsons seemed perfectly achievable by the end of that decade. After all, it’d have been kind of like Back to the Future Part II without the time travel, and that arrived in 1989. Now, 25 years later, the effects necessary are even more available, but...

Over the last few years we’ve reported on the development of a live-action film adaptation of The Jetsons. At one point Robert Rodriguez was even attached to direct it. It seems like things have moved away from that, and now Warner Bros. Pictures is looking to finally move forward with it as an animated feature. According to Deadline, the studio hired a screenwriter named Matt Lieberman to write the script. He hasn’t really done much, other than a direct to video film called Doctor Dolittle: Tail to the Chief. He’s also currently working on films such as an upcoming remake of Short Circuit, set to be directed by Tim Hill, and an original idea called The Pet, which Jared Hess is attached to helm. He's also working on a new theatrical animated film for Scooby-Doo.

The Jetsons are returning to the big screen in animated form, as Warner Bros orders a screenplay.
The last time that The Jetsons arrived in cinemas in a feature didn't quite go to plan. In spite of the involvement of Joseph Barbera, William Hanna and Mel Blanc, it was an underwhelming effort, with a song plonked in the middle of it all that didn't really help. We love The Jetsons, but that film was not a high point.
Effectively the futuristic take on The Flinstones, there's still a lot to like about The Jetsons then, which has become oddly prescient. How many people do you know push a few buttons and then sit down needing a rest?
Anyway, Warner Bros had been toying with a live action movie of The Jetsons for some time now, and we now learn that it's opted to go fully animated. As such, it's hired...

After being stuck in development hell for some time, there's finally a big screen adaptation of The Jetsons in the works, but it won't be live-action as was originally the plan. Instead, the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon will be getting an animated feature film from Warner Bros. Pictures, and the studio has just hired Matt Lieberman, who has scripted a lot of films that are in development at various studios. Since this is an animated adaptation of the cartoon, we're guessing that the plans for a live-action version that somehow involved Kanye West. Honestly, we're a little bummed that we'll probably never get to see that version. Anyway, Lieberman has been all around Hollywood with projects like a spec script called 12/24 that is a found footage Santa Claus movie and also an adaptation of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disney, along with the remake of Short Circuit that seems stuck in development.

According to Variety, Warners is ready to answer the age-old question, “Scooby Doo, where are you?” The studio is prepping an animated feature for the world’s most famous sandwich-eating dog with the same producers that worked to bring the 2002 live-action/CGI hybrid to life. Charles Roven and Richard Suckle will be producing from a script from Matt Lieberman who recently wrote the Short Circuit reboot. The studio isn’t revealing the concept, but they won’t get away with it if the meddling internet has anything to say. The character has been through a ton of incarnations (the best, of course, involving the Harlem Globetrotters), but anytime someone plans new Scooby Doo, there’s a potential for goofy greatness. Naturally it’s difficult to see new stuff without Don Messick voicing Scoobs, but maybe there’s a great vocal talent that can do the character justice. Neil Fanning was passable in the live-action movies, and...

Back in 2002, Warner Bros released a live-action "Scooby-Doo" movie that was written by James Gunn (director of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy") and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze, Jr, Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, and Alicia Silverstone. The film grossed $275 million worldwide on a budget of $84 million. A sequel was quickly greenlit and released in 2004, but it grossed only $181 million. The studio apparently feels that there's still some money to be made from the franchise, because it is now developing an animated "Scooby-Doo" movie that will be released in theaters. Matt Lieberman ("Short Circuit" reboot) is writing the script. "Scooby-Doo" was created in 1969 by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. The original animated TV series focused on a group of mystery-solving teenagers, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, Velma and their cowardly dog, Scooby-Doo. Since then, there have been numerous TV spin-offs and direct-to-video projects, in addition to the two live-action movies.

After all, Scooby and the gang have maintained a steady stream of new content over on Cartoon Network; with more than twenty direct-to-video depictions since 1998, too. In terms of this new animated feature, though, the studio has kept plot details in the spooky dark other than announcing that Short Circuit scribe Matt Lieberman has been hired to pen the script.

The generally repugnant reboot would, in this case, offer a chance to correct everything that's wrong with the current version – the characters, the plot, the actors, the soundtrack …
In cinematic terms, "reboot" has become a dirty word. People who reboot old movies are seen as hacks; cynical, idea-free megalomaniacs who'd happily stamp all over your childhood memories for a stack of coins. Michael Bay wants to reboot the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because he wishes the turtles were aliens. Tim Hill wants to reboot Short Circuit because he wishes it was a paranoid thriller. Zack Snyder wants to reboot Superman because it's that or make a sequel to Sucker Punch. It can only be a matter of time before someone makes a reboot of The Last Station where Leo Tolstoy raps and has a cheeky pet monkey. Simply put, there is nothing good about a reboot.

Hop & Alvin and the Chipmunks mastermind Tim Hill is at it again, with Deadline reporting that, through Fox, he and Dave Johnson have been hired to write Playdate, a family comedy that he’ll be directing. You may be curious as to what the plot will entail; if you ask Deadline, the title itself makes the under-wraps story “somewhat self explanatory.” So, what, kids go on a playdate and something crazy happens? I guess? If we’re in the dark to such a strong degree, Nicky Weinstock and Invertigo Films are taking a huge risk here.
Of course, there is the question of where this might leave his Short Circuit reboot — which, in all actuality, would only be a pressing matter if anybody a) cared about or b) wanted to see his Short Circuit reboot. Maybe Playdate can… not exactly redeem his career or turn it all around, but possibly serve as some basic entertainment.

Bob Gale (Back to the Future) and Ryan E. Heppe (Short Circuit) are set to bring Scott Hampton‘s supernatural graphic novel Trespassers to the big screen. The story centers on a group of mythbusters who set out to debunk the legend of a famous allegedly haunted house. They have their scientific rationality tested when they discover demonic guardians, a gateway to hell and the fact that not all of them are exactly who they claim to be.
Producer Ryan Heppe told Variety,
“A good horror flick needs one thing: a simple, original premise that’s terrifying as hell,” Heppe said. “Add to that obvious franchise potential, and the opportunity to combine “found footage”-style scares with traditional filmmaking frights and you’ve got something really unique.”

Apparently, the film has been a "pet project" (no pun intended) for Academy Award-winning producer Scott Rudin and director David Silverman (The Simpsons Movie, Monsters, Inc.). Previous writers include Matt Lieberman (Short Circuit) and Tim Downing (This Means War), though Hess is expected to take over writing duties as well as to direct the film. I know this idea is nothing new because I read this same story as a book. I tried looking for the name of it, but I can't find it. All I...

Jared Hess, remember him? Well back in 2004 he was one of the hottest young directors on the block after the success of “Napoleon Dynamite,” which achieved almost instantaneous cult status and spawned a generation of kids who became inseperable from their "Vote For Pedro" t-shirts. His next project looked set to be a sure fire hit – a similarly quirky comedy, “Nacho Libre” -- only instead of the unknown Jon Heder, he had comedy titan Jack Black still riding the crest of the wave of success from “School of Rock” and “King Kong.” But the film opened to poor reviews, and despite a solid enough showing at the domestic box office, it flopped internationally. Following that up with “Gentleman Broncos” did him no good at all, and eventually Hess found himself back where he started – creating “Napoleon Dynamite – The Animated Series.”
But it looks like Hess’ luck is about to change...

Jared Hess, the director best known for his breakout hit Napoleon Dynamite, is going into business with Disney and producer Scott Rudin. Hess has agreed to helm The Pet, a science-fiction project that has been sitting on the shelf for quite some time but now appears ready to fast-track its way to theaters, according to Variety. Based on an original idea by Short Circuit screenwriter Matt Lieberman, The Pet follows a human who is abducted by extraterrestrials and turned into their family pet. The trade notes that Rudin has been shepherding this picture along since 2007, when he was still with Disney and under contract at Miramax. No word yet on when Hess will begin Pet production. The tone of the comedy will be family-friendly, making it a perfect fit for Disney, and now The Pet will have to be tailored to fit the comedic styles of whomever is hired to...

Jared Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite") has been hired to direct long-gestating sci-fi live-action family comedy "The Pet" at Disney Pictures says Variety.
Matt Lieberman ("Short Circuit") came up with the story which centers on a man abducted by aliens, taken to their planet and turned into a family pet.
Tim Dowling ("This Means War") performed a recent re-write on the script but with Hess' involvement that script is expected to get further tweaks. David Silverman has previously been attached to direct.
Scott Rudin, Craig Perry and Sheila Hanahan Taylor are producing.

The Pet sci-fi family comedy from producer Scott Rudin to be directed by Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite. Rudin will produce the live-action family science fiction comedy alongside Taylor Hanahan and Craig Perry, reports Variety. Pic is based on Matt Lieberman's (Short Circuit) original idea and tells of a man who, after being abducted by aliens, is taken to their planet and made into a family pet. Rudin originally had this at Disney but after Miramax was sold, he had no place for his adult-targeted films, and moved over to Sony. Hess will apparently be overseeing all parts of the creative process for The Pet, which was recently rewritten by This Means War writer Tim Dowling, and had The Simpsons' director David Silverman on board.

Like a poor, unwanted stray making big watery eyes as potential adopters walk past its cage, Disney’s alien comedy The Pet has been looking for someone to take care of it for a while now. But there could just be a happy ending in sight, as Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess has been hired to take it on.The Pet, originally written by Short Circuit reboot scribe Matt Lieberman, has been sitting at Disney since 2007. Producer Scott Rudin had been in charge of feeding it and taking it out on walks, but he left it behind when he departed Disney in the wake of the company selling Miramax. In 2008, Simpsons Movie director David Silverman was interested and actually ended up attached, but it didn’t work out.Now Rudin is involved once more, and since the film is a family comedy – it focuses on a man abducted by aliens...

Dimension Films announced today that they have hired Matt Lieberman to pen their family film Short Circuit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, newcomer Matthew Lieberman has been signed to write the Short Circuit reboot going on over at Dimension Films. He’d previously written the not-at-all-liked Dr. Doolittle: Tail to the Chief which went straight to video on the coattails of the Eddie Murphy movies, but this project is an interesting way to get a foot in the door of the feature world. What’s more important is that Tim Hill is set to be the director. Hill’s recent work includes Alvin and the Chipmunks, Hop and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (apparently everyone involved loves “tail” puns). All of that sounds awful, but once upon a time, Hill also directed Muppets From Space. How someone got from weird and wonderful to boringly broad and homogenous is anyone’s guess. Forget it, fans. It’s Chinatown. That’s sad, but the most fascinating thing about bring back Johnny Five to life is...

We've been hearing about a potential Short Circuit remake for half a decade now. It began in 2006 when the project was first announced, continued in 2008 when it was announced that Dimension Films picked up the rights, and kept going when it was reported that Steve Carr had signed on to direct. In all that time the project has never managed to make its way out of development hell, but leave to a Hollywood studio to never let a bad idea die the death it deserves. Deadline reports that Dimension Films is now in talks with director Tim Hill to reboot Short Circuit. Hill is best known for his work in the field of CGI/live-action hybrid films, having previously made Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, Alvin and the Chipmunks and, most recently, Hop. The original film centers on a robot named Johnny-5 that is built as a weapon for...
