At a quarter to midnight on New Years Eve 1899, Adriaan Lietaard is fatally bitten by his prized green panther snake. He only has 15 minutes to figure out which one of his relatives put the snake in his safe, before succumbing to the deadly poison. At Photo studio P. van Straaten, two models, Jacky and Penny, are dressed in Lederhosen to film a muesli ad. A missing prop, William Tell's arrow, is found lodged in the chest of Mabel de Ruijter, the studio's owner. Inspector Jeanine Kaart and her assistant De Bruin round up the suspects. Mabel's widower Ralf is already busy flirting with Penny. Nephew Paul, the photographer, is planning to marry Jacky, while his assistant Suzanne also has a reason to despise Mabel.

During a cruise in 1988, young Mrs. Vrijland appears to have taken her own life by jumping out a port side window. The ship's purser suspects foul play and begins an investigation. The last to have seen the missing woman was her neighbor, elderly Mrs. De Vos. The purser soon finds out the victim's husband Jan is having an affair with another woman on board, while the victim herself was seen in the company of notorious playboy Arnold Pauw. Even the purser's assistant turns out to have done time for forgery.

Inspector Lucassen learns the victim's widow is having an affair with Skinny the drummer. Road manager Toni would do anything for guitarist Adje, who was being blackmailed by Ricky. A screwdriver with white paint on it becomes the most important piece of evidence.
