Both on the awards circuit and in the public consciousness, HBO is widely regarded as among the first Hollywood heavyweights to recognize that television, as a medium, had the power to deliver sprawling, large scale stories on a smaller screen. From HBO’s ascent in the late 1990s through its dragon-aided roar across the 2010s, the network’s original series tackled universal stories, stretching across continents and decades.
The network hasn’t been without controversy, though. HBO faced questions about its lack of diversity in flagship series, including “Game of Thrones” and “Girls,” throughout the 2010s. And, unshackled from the restrictions of broadcast TV, the various steps the network took to push the limit of what’s allowed on screen garnered a fair share of pearl-clutching headlines; see “The Sopranos” in the ’90s and “Euphoria” just a few years back. The two buzziest TV shows of 2024 so far are FX's "Shōgun," adapting James Clavell's 1975 book about an Englishman who winds up in 17th century Japan from novel to miniseries, and "X-Men '97," a revival of every millennial's favorite "X-Men" cartoon from 1992. But what if I told you there was a comic out there which combined the thrills of both these shows into one?
That comic is Hiroaki Samura's samurai manga "Blade of the Immortal." Set during Japan's Edo period, the titular immortal is Manji, a ronin with a checkered past. So checkered, in fact, that he was cursed by a witch with kessen-chū — "bloodworms," or grubs infused in his body that enable him to heal from almost any injury and keep Manji in his physical prime.
If you've been watching "Shōgun," you'll know how important honorable death was to warriors in feudal Japan, so Manji's immortality is not a gift.

With the appetite of a hungry grizzly, “The Bear” could gobble up a few Emmy records for its sophomore season. Fresh off a smashing first season that set a new benchmark for comedy series wins with 10 trophies, FX’s awards-gobbling show shows no signs of letting up. Its second season, which aired in June 2023, is eyeing three more records to own: most acting nominations for a series in a single year, most nods for a comedy, and most nominated episode in history with its sixth installment, “Fishes.”
“Fishes” dishes out a heated Christmas dinner flashback of the Berzatto family, positioning itself as the series’ pièce de résistance thus far — imagine the “Succession/Connor’s Wedding” version of family dinners, only with more food spills. Directed by Christopher Storer, who also co-wrote the episode with Joanna Calo, “Fishes” seems the obvious pick for Emmy nods in both directing and writing categories.

George Martin has been building the world of Ice and Fire for decades, and HBO’s TV adaptation allowed the whole world to marvel upon his creation. Unfortunately, as you know, the TV show went off the rails at one point — and according to the latest information, Grrm was actively trying to steer it back in the right direction.
That… Didn’t work out. Here’s how the events unfolded.
George Martin Started Worrying in Season 5
While the distinct lack of new ASoIaF books tells us that Grrm doesn’t necessarily know what happens next in his series, he has always known what doesn’t happen. A third Wonder Woman movie was in development at Warner Bros. right up until James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-heads of the relaunched DC Studios, and the decision to scrap the project came as a surprise to a lead actor from the previous films.
While promoting his new movie, Poolman, during an interview with Business Insider, Chris Pine (Steve Trevor) said he was "shocked" that the studio would pull the plug on a franchise that took in almost $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
"I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere. I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”
Pine wasn't going to reprise his role after being killed off (again) in Wonder Woman 1984. “It would be...

Renowned fantasy author George R.R. Martin stands by his principle on the importance of writing ‘gratuitous’ food scenes in his Game of Thrones book series. He has received several comments about the abundance of his narratives when it comes to writing about food, and many think his novels would have been a lot less thicker had he spared them the long descriptions.
Jack Gleeson and Lena Headey in Game of Thrones
But for the writer, it is very essential that he puts a premium on these types of scenes. Martin believes the journey matters more than the destination, so he wants the readers to see, feel, and even taste his words when they read them.

Although Kit Harington attracted all eyes on him with his prolific performance since the beginning of Game of Thrones, people can’t forget one House Stark character who set the tone for the show’s notorious unpredictability. It’s none other than the actor behind the role of Eddard “Ned” Stark, Sean Bean, who left quite an impression on the series and its fans.
Sean Bean in Game of Thrones
Despite Sean Bean’s appearance in Game of Thrones being cut short with an untimely demise at the end of season one, his impact on the series extended far beyond his character’s arc. His influence was later seen in the performances of subsequent actors, including Paddy Considine who appeared as King Viserys in the prequel series House of the Dragon.

“Storytelling, and the words that they put in their actors’ mouths. They’re just glorious,” declares Liam Cunningham when giving high praise to the creators of Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem.” The series was created by multiple Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” duo David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who serve as co-creators and producers with writer/producer Alexander Woo (“True Blood”). For our recent webchat, Cunningham (who worked with Benioff and Weiss as Ser Davos Seaworth on “Game of Thrones”) adds, “it’s just wonderful! They aim so high with difficult storytelling that most normal people wouldn’t attempt to go near.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

James Cameron has seldom been more vocal about his appreciation for an artist than when he was completely bowled over by Bernard Hill’s role in Titanic. For a director as esteemed as Cameron, there must be very few things that can still hold that effect on him, however, Titanic still manages to churn out such rare and treasured moments at a steady pace.

Despite playing only a minor role in the film, the subtlety of Bernard Hill’s powerhouse performance in the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio film held the capacity to move the director of the $2.26 billion romantic tragedy. As such, it was only right that Cameron expressed his gratitude and privilege after witnessing the understated actor’s process at work.

Doctor Who is one of the most iconic and storied sci-fi franchises ever. However, while the long-running British TV series commands a legion of loyal Whovians across the globe, its low budget has held the show back from reaching the same heights as, say, Star Trek and Star Wars. However, with Disney+ now involved, Doctor Who stands a very real chance of breaking into the mainstream and attracting a larger audience than ever before. That was evident from last year’s specials and, with Russell T. Davies (who relaunched the series to great success in 2005) at the helm, the Whoniverse is in undeniably safe hands.
Two episodes were provided for review, both of which launch on Disney+/BBC this weekend. The first of those is "Space Babies," a light-hearted effort allowing Millie Davies to establish Ruby Sunday as the Doctor’s new companion as she discovers the wackiness and joy...

During her “stay” at Harrenhal, Arya Stark once again met the enigmatic man she’d saved earlier — the one who called himself Jaqen H’Ghar at the time. As we learn later, he was, in fact, one of the Faceless Men, the order of shapeshifting assassins who assumed Jaqen’s identity as a disguise and had nothing to do with the man.
Despite that, the Faceless Man was very clearly disturbed when Arya told him to kill Jaqen H’Ghar. Why would he be afraid? He wasn’t that person, after all. Right?..
Arya Cleverly Blackmailed the Faceless Man
Most Game of Thrones fans would argue that Arya Stark mishandled the power of having a Faceless Man at her disposal. With three names and an entire list of enemies to choose from, she picked way too insignificant targets — but, justified by the consequences or not, Arya still used her sinister power over life smartly once.

Ever since the release of HBO’s eight-seasoned highly anticipated Game of Thrones in 2011, the series gave birth to several fan discussions and theories. Considering Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen as one of the most influential characters in the show, there sparked a debate surrounding her, that still hasn’t died down, years later.

Apart from gaining global fame, Emilia Clarke’s journey as Daenerys Targaryen struck a chord in many fans’ hearts, who then turned her into the HBO show’s most-loved character. However, despite her good deeds and loving nature, the last season saw Daenerys struggling to fit in at Winterfell as if the North didn’t care about her sacrifices. This particular behavior sparked debate among Redditors about whether or not she sacrificed for the North.

Joseph Michael Straczynski, a screenwriter who worked on numerous films, TV series and comic books, dreamed of correcting what he saw as the main problem with sci-fi series of the 1980s and 1990s – the lack of long-term planning.
He believed that writers and directors who were forced to work from episode to episode could not tell a truly big, complex, and consistent story.
Instead of making a series in which the characters explored a new planet or uncovered an anomaly in each episode, Straczynski decided to create an epic that focused on the relationships between characters and states.
His primary source of inspiration was literature: Asimov's Foundation series, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Herbert's Dune, and other large-scale epics. And in 1994 his ambitious project was released – Babylon 5, which even after 30 years has an audience rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When the first trailer for Disney Plus’s new Star Wars series, The Acolyte, dropped this winter, it raked up more views in its first 24 hours than any other Star Wars series to date. However, it also happened to be their most disliked trailer to date on the platform, to the point that many accused online trolls of review-bombing the trailer. Even still, hardcore fans of the franchise seemed to meet the trailer with a bit of a shrug, so Lucasfilm and Disney are celebrating Star Wars Day (May the 4th) with a new, more-action driven trailer which makes it seem almost like a sci-fi version of a classic Kung-Fu film from the seventies.
Indeed, martial arts epics and samurai tales always influenced George Lucas when he crafted the original trilogy, so it makes sense that showrunner Lesyle Headland’s take on the franchise would make these elements more prominent than ever.

An earlier trailer released in March (watch below) first introduced us to the characters of Mae, Master Sol and Master Indara — respectively played by Amandla Stenberg (The Eddy), Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Marvel’s Jessica Jones) — and offered a peek of the Wookiee Jedi named Kelnacca (Solo: A Star Wars Story...

The 2010s ushered in the golden age of television: the production of TV series became more expensive, scripts were on par with high quality feature films, and Hollywood actors forgot the cliché that "acting in TV is the end of a career."
At some point, there were even too many TV shows, and while some of them won the audience's love and achieved hit status, such as Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, others went almost unnoticed.
It is generally accepted that the heyday of sitcoms remained somewhere in the 1990s and 2000s. But such successful shows as Schitt's Creek or, for example, Abbott Elementary prove the opposite. Unfortunately, not every good sitcom has found an audience due to the abundance of projects.
Such a fate befell Catastrophe, which was released in 2015 and received unconditional love from a narrow circle of fans. The sitcom currently has a 98% rating from critics...

By the notorious Game of Thrones finale, few OGs remained around. The Tyrells, the Targaryens, the Martells, the Bolton, the Freys, and many others essentially went extinct and lost everything. The Lannisters, the Baratheons, and the Starks lost almost all their heirs save for the most unlikely ones. Many Great and small Houses fell to never rise again, with new dynasties coming to take their places.
But one unlikely Great House managed to sit out all the danger, and its lord didn’t lose anything; in fact, he gained much more than he had at the start of the story.
House Arryn Started the Chaos in Westeros
If we pretend to ignore Petyr Baelish’s active participation in these events for a second, it was Jon Arryn, Robert Baratheon’s Hand of the King, who started the entire ordeal that led to the War of the Five Kings. Jon Arryn...

Game of Thrones fans obsessively watched the series to see who would end up on the Iron Throne. The conclusion to years of scheming and fighting was a controversial one to say the least.
However, we’re got a different question about the series to answer: Which star from the cast is the wealthiest with the highest estimated net worth?
HBO’s fantasy series is the sort of industry dominating, pop culture titan that comes around every so often and totally changes the game. And while the characters battled it out on the screen, the show made its stars rich in real life.
The show brought the world of Westeros to life straight from the pages of George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire novels and became a breakaway hit that fans are still talking about many years after the grand finale.

More than three years after Game of Thrones came to a divisive end, HBO returned to the land of Westeros with House of the Dragon, a Targaryen-centric prequel series that debuted on August 21, 2022. Fans weren’t meant to wait this long for a Game of Thrones spinoff — or “successor show,” as author George R. R. Martin prefers to call it — but HBO didn’t have the easiest time turning its smash hit into a franchise. Case in point: The pilot for another prequel series, the Naomi Watts-led project detailed below, cost $30 million to film, according to the James Andrew Miller book Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers (via Entertainment Weekly). The next spinoff in development was a Jon Snow sequel series that would see Kit Harington return to his most famous role. Harington himself has said it’s been shelved, but that’s not the only tale of Westeros in development.

Elden Ring puts forth a lot of mysteries for players to deduce in FromSoftware’s typical cryptic storytelling fashion, and the colossal Fire Giant, who has an eye in his torso for some reason, is one of these mysteries. The Surtr-inspired boss is apparently the last of the giants after the war against them, but beyond this, their lineage isn’t expanded on much.
However, the game also hints at a far more ancient and somehow even larger breed of giants, with their remnants scattered chillingly across the Mountaintops of the Giants. The lore doesn’t explain how they ended up there, and we’ll likely never get to fight them, even in Shadow of the Erdtree.
The Giants Were Of Unbelievably Massive Stature
Just the skull alone is bigger than the Fire Giant, so the entire body would be incomprehensible.

The Bear is one of those rare stories that comes along once in a blue moon. It doesn't get by on flashy CG, explosions, or modded-out race cars flying down the streets.
Witty dialogue, high stress, and intense drama fuel this machine, and perhaps that's why so many big-name actors are attracted to its frenzied undercurrents.
Kudos to the creative team assembled under the banner of The Bear. They've created a fantastic ride, thrumming with intensity and entertainment without needing to spend a fortune.
They're clearly doing something right. Series creator Christopher Storer (bolstered by incredible writers like Joanna Calo) nails the pace and character beats while accomplishing a rare feat within the industry, perfecting the art of the cameo appearance.
Cameos are often tricky for several reasons. They tend to disrupt the immersive nature of the story. As a prime example, everyone is still trying to forget Ed Sheeran...

One of the most fascinating elements about the Assassin’s Creed franchise is how with every instalment, Ubisoft takes the player on a journey to experience a completely new and fresh country. And the icing on the cake for gamers who also happen to be fans of the popular Game of Thrones series is how the next game might just be set in the place where a lot of the shooting for the HBO’s show took place.
This Ubisoft franchise might soon be in a crossover with Game of Thrones indirectly
As many diehard fans would know, much of the shooting for the mentioned series was hosted nowhere else but in Malta, an Island country located in Southern Europe, and a place that has been one of the top tourist destinations ever since, especially for Game of Thrones fans.

The Elden Ring community has had a field day since its Shadow of the Erdtree Dlc was first announced last year. Likewise, players have often been proposing theories that would explain the events that took place in the main storyline and the ones that are going to happen in the coming extension, with one speculation even predicting how Messmer the Impaler is not the villain the players think he is.
Messmer in Shadow of the Erdtree
Not much is yet known about who the snake and flame-wielding Npc really is, but everything will finally be revealed to players when the Dlc comes out on 21st June, next month, and it might just bring the answer to how Queen Marika is related to the new character.

George R. R. Martin’s commitment to Game of Thrones and his eventual exit from the show felt somewhat like a betrayal to the audience of the critically acclaimed HBO series. But for Martin himself, one particular betrayal from the series’ creators felt like severing a limb from his body.
Game of Thrones [Credit: Home Box Office Inc.]The commitment that the author and the audience generously devoted to the HBO show was paid tenfold in kind for the first 6 seasons and could have progressed in the same manner, if not for one disastrous decision. Months before Game of Thrones branched off into a spin-off series, the author reflected on what made the ending so inconclusive and unsatisfactory.

House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series that debuted on HBO and Max in 2022 and is returning soon, focuses on House Targaryen, generations before the events of the original Game of Thrones series.
They are, of course, the ancestors of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), one of the main characters on Game of Thrones, whose series-long plot was about wanting to recapture her family's throne.
While House of the Dragon focuses on that particular family, we did get occasional glimpses of other familiar houses in the first season of that show, including the Baratheons. Also, there are fleeting mentions of Houses such as Arryn and Stark.
While the members of House Stark were among the most important characters throughout Game of Thrones, none of the Starks were major characters In the first season of House of the Dragon.

Elden Ring is the pinnacle of Soulslike games and FromSoftware CEO and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has some ambitious plans for the franchise and its future. The lore is vast enough for the developers to omit certain content and save it for the Shadow of the Erdtree Dlc.
Expansions and DLCs are a common practice for FromSoftware but in this case, the upcoming Dlc for its most successful video game is a long time coming. Initially, the content was intended for the base game but Miyazaki believes it is best suited as an expansion.
Shadow of the Erdtree Will Amplify the Elden Ring Experience
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree will be released on June 21st.
The Soulslike director dropped his two cents regarding the topic of expansions and new content that could affect the player’s experience if it were divided into separate parts or sold across different points in time in an interview.

Following a limited theatrical release, director Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review Here) was released through the Netflix streaming service back in December, then Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver (read our review of that one Here) reached the service last month… but we’ve known from early on that these PG-13 versions of the movies wouldn’t be the only versions we’d see. Snyder has also put together extended director’s cut of both films, which will each have around an hour of additional footage. They’re expected to be released through Netflix sometime this summer, possibly in August, and the director’s cut of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire just got its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. It earned an R for brutal bloody violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.

Being as humongous and intricate as it is, the Star Wars franchise has had several plotholes that continue to confuse fans. From the Galaxy forgetting the Jedi to Palpatine’s secret horde of superweapons, there are several instances and events that remain unsolved. And one of the biggest plotholes is the relationship between Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker in the first film.
Leia and Luke in the original Star Wars trilogy
From their incestuous kiss to their alleged romantic trope, the misunderstanding of the two being romantically involved was also aided by John Williams’ romantic musical score. And the legendary composer solely blames George Lucas for his mistake.

Despite the widely despised series finale of "Game of Thrones" -- which, for the record, we at /Film didn't hate nearly as much as the rest of the world seemed to at the time -- the show was an immense cultural juggernaut for HBO, and in the risk-averse television landscape, it's only natural that other channels and streamers saw that show's success and wanted to replicate it for themselves. Prime Video spend ungodly amounts of money on the rights to a TV show set in "The Lord of the Rings" universe, Netflix dumped a bunch of money into the forgotten "Marco Polo," and even History got into the mix with "Vikings."
FX, meanwhile, decided to greenlight "Shogun," a tremendously expensive-looking adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 novel (which was previously adapted into an ultra-popular miniseries in the '80s). After enduring production delays due to the pandemic and finally premiering this February,...

A gripping plot, superb acting, thought-out dialog, an amazing ability to hold the audience's attention, sex, violence, and struggle for power – Game of Thrones was famous for all of this, but was it the first of its kind?
Perhaps in every genre there is the series that was unfairly closed at the most interesting moment. For fans of science fiction, Firefly became such a wound in the heart, and for fans of historical dramas, there is Rome, the return of which most connoisseurs of the genre dream of.
As it happens, Rome has only two seasons. But even that is enough to appreciate it.
Rome Was Game of Thrones’ Predecessor

It's a show that is as controversial as it is influential, one that helped bring serialization to mainstream TV, make the showrunner as recognizable among TV obsessives as the actors on screen, and delivered one of the most controversial endings in history (though it is a perfect send-off for the show).

It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.
If the reason you fell in love with a series is altered or gone one day, then the connection created is absent,...
