A wild roller-coaster ride of an episode
ametaphysicalshark9 October 2008
Contrary to what some say, "Skins" IS realistic in some ways: the characters are believable and even some of the more outlandish events in the series are unsettlingly authentic, such as most of the partying shown. "Skins" does take dramatic liberty with a lot of things, though, and the reason it remains essential, excellent drama as opposed to cheap nonsense like most teen dramas is its sense of humor, audacity, relative originality, and tendency to take risks.

"Effy", episode 8 from the first series of "Skins", features what is by far one of the most outrageous and over-the-top story lines on "Skins", following up on Tony sending the pictures of Abigail through Josh's phone to Michelle and a bunch of other people. Josh's idea of revenge is sick, twisted, and dark like nothing else in the series up to this point, and is handled excellently by the writers, who succeed in making it feel dark and actually sort of spooky and disturbing. There's some hilarious sections in this episode, but as a whole it's as dark as "Skins" gets in series one (series two would feature several more episodes where things got really dark and miserable).

Hats off to director Adam Smith who builds a spooky and foreboding atmosphere without which this episode might have fallen flat on its face, and kudos to Kaya Scodelario, the youngest of the frequently seen Skins actors, but also perhaps the most talented and promising. She perfectly embodies the mysterious, intriguing, and dangerously sexual Effy.

This is terrific drama.

Sid is an idiot.

Warning: Spoilers
He convinces the very sweet, very beautiful, very fragile Cassie to meet him in the middle of the night. And then he leaves her sitting there for that POS useless jerk Tony. Once again breaking the heart of a wonderful girl, over a miserable selfish idiot. Tony is the most useless type of individual. And apparently although very different, Sid is no better. Cassie deserves so much more.

Josh Gets Payback By Using Effy

Warning: Spoilers
Tony and Effy sit at the table with their parents for their dad's birthday. Their dad tells an anecdote that they have heard before - aunt leans down and shows her breasts, grandpa tells her he wants the breasts, legs and something else. Dad says he thought of the most nonsexual part - he asked for thighs. Tony says thighs can be sexy and dad retorts how?! Mom tells dad maybe not in front of Effy.

Effy secretly leaves the home and takes off the outer layers to reveal a stringy-backed royal blue top that shows off her belly. Tony just smiles as he watches.

Tony goes to Effy's room and wears her red socks to fool his parents into thinking she is asleep under the covers. The parents cringingly talk about lovemaking and mom tells dad to go wash his bits.

Effy is in the bus with a very chatty girl. Effy looks so hot with the dark makeup.

Effy and her group are in what looks like a warehouse of some sort. She sits and makes out with a boy high up.

Effy smiles as she gets injected.

Tony goes to find Effy. He ends up at a sports club. Inside its red light in a locker room.

Effy is passed out and Josh reveals his plan. He tells Tony he has to have sex with his sister. Josh is angry Tony sent out pornographic photos of his own sister out under his name. Tony is stripped to his boxers and told to start getting an erection. He has to have sex with Effy.

Next scene shows Tony carrying out Effy.

Effy lies unconscious on a hospital bed with her parents and Tony around her. She looks so beautiful lying there. The parents accuse Tony of giving her the clean drugs.

Actions have consequences....

Warning: Spoilers
Ep 8 is Effy focused which felt like a surprise, you're expecting her to be this background character who she doesn't speak. It starts with a funny family dinner scene, Effy and Tony are very close, they both like to manipulate their parents in different ways. As well as not speaking there's other character traits about Effy which ought to set alarm bells ringing, she likes to play with fire, seems to love partying, taking drugs, being reckless, and seems to have no regard for her own safety or anyone else's. Throughout the show though, Tony despite being something of a sociopath, there is one exception, he does care and worry about his sister. By this point Tony is now effectively friendless, having isolated the group through his cruel and manipulative behaviour. Even Sid will no longer return his calls. Effy meanwhile also has a talkative slightly Bristolian friend which you'll see more of again later. The episode is pretty unique taking place over just 6 hours or so and shot almost entirely at night. Being friendless is a nightmare for Tony, largely because he has nobody now to show off to, nobody to worship him, which is basically what his selfworth is based on, everyone thinking he's the best. When it looks like Effy might be in danger though Tony is pulled into some kind of weird game, with no idea who or what is waiting for him at the end. He's forced to turn to Sid for help. It might be the first time we've seen Tony desperate, he's usually the one who's in control and calling the shots, so it's a nice role reversal. He does though have the intelligence to grab a partner and a car, to cruise around, spot her and take her home. Posh Josh also makes a return "I'm off for a late night at the sports club. Wanna come? Quick drink? Can't we be a laugh?" "This is here the rich kids come to die." There's a of nice lighting in here, red, blue, neon colours, masked boys, raving and some cool music. The dialogue too between Sid and Tony continues to make you laugh, "It's a bit spooky." "You're not still afraid of the dark? You still sleep with that night light on don't you?" "It's not a nightlight, it's a glow in the dark batman! It's retro!" This is the last episode featuring a mean Tony, again the bright, colourful look of episode 1-5 is gone now and the night seems to go on and on. Things get pretty dark in this one. But I think Tony had to go through it to come to understand the error of his ways. There's a lovely final shot and conversation between Tony and Sid at the hospital. It's lovely cinematography how they're both in the same frame together during it and how the camera slowly pans in emphasising their closeness.
