A Bed with a View
Prismark1018 September 2019
In hindsight it is surprisingly that Only When I Laugh lasted for so long when it involved three people in a hospital ward.

It is a surprisingly strong opening episode with several laughs. It starts with naive Norman Binns (Christopher Strauli) entering the hospital ward and he encounters the working class Roy Figgis (James Bolam) who is eyeing up Binns hospital bed as it has a view of the garden.

The more urbane, middle class and hypochondriac Archie Glover (Peter Bowles) also has his eye on that bed and manages to scare Figgis out of it.

The result is that staff nurse Gupte becomes exasperated and confused with all the patient bed hopping. Dr Thorpe (Richard Wilson) is not impressed with new boy Norman, he certainly dislikes Glover as there is nothing wrong with him and Figgis who is always moaning.

As for Glover, he wished he stayed in his own bed.

Bolam is not that far removed from his character Terry that he played in The LIkely Lads. It was a well made opener. However I always had issues with this show and it might explain why it might not be as well loved as the other sitcoms that some of the cast has been involved in.

The character of Gupte with his Peter Sellers Indian accent was always problematic with me. Take it this way, the next day at school, the asian kids got the Gupte treatment as people mimicked his accent to them. Then there was the casual sexism with Glover always reading soft porn magazines in the ward. This occurs in the subsequent episode.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a good start to the show and introduction to the cast, newboy Norman Binns has just arrived on the Ward doesn't know what he is in for.

Norman is not exactly off to a good start when Dr. Richard Thorpe, does not even seem to know one patient from another.

Archie Glover appears happy to hear that he is fit to leave hospital, but he still wants it in writing for his insurance premium.

Dr Thorpe is surprised when he discovered that Glover is still around, as he was convinced that he had seen the last of him.

I see comments about the accent of actor Derrick Branche, who plays the male nurse Gupte in this show. Comparing it to that of Peter Sellers when he, portrayed an Indian doctor in the film Goodness Gracious Me.

This is quite frankly a nonsensical comparison, as Derrick Branche is actually an Indian actor.

While Peter Sellers was patently not, and of course would never have got any opportunity to play that part today.

Bed hopping. Good first episode.

Young Norman Binns arrives on the ward, only to find competition for a bed, a bed with a view of the Daffodils.

It's a fine first episode, a funny scenario, it definitely has some good one liners, the delivery from each cast member is great.

It's also a battle of the classes, Peter Bowles always played the part of a toff really well, Bolam the complete opposite, amazing as a working class man.

We're introduced to the main trio of patients, Figgis, Binns and Glover, and we meet Doctor Glover and Gupte.

There are elements of Victor Meldrew in Doctor Thorpe, he's definitely a bit grumpy, and definitely sarcastic, Wilson's delivery is flawless.

Enjoyable, 7/10.
