Apple TV+ found the perfect fit for its ever-growing lineup with the launch of ‘Tetris” on March 31. The film tells the unbelievable story of how one of the world’s most popular video games found its way to avid players around the globe. Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) discovers Tetris in 1988, and then risks everything by traveling to the Soviet Union, where he joins forces with inventor Alexey Pazhitnov (Nikita Efremov) to bring the game to the masses. Based on a true story, “Tetris” is described as “a Cold War-era thriller on steroids, with double-crossing villains, unlikely heroes and a nail-biting race to the finish.”
Following its March 15 premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, critics praised the film, earning it an 82% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads, “While it’s nowhere near as addictive or fast-paced as the game, ‘Tetris’ offers a fun, fizzy account of the story behind an 8-bit classic.

One of the more fun challenges for any writer must be figuring out the narrowest possible scope to capture the broadest possible moment in history. Take Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City,” for example. The recently un-greenlit series remains a Hollywood favorite because Larson used a lurid series of events – the rise and fall of serial killer H.H. Holmes – as a window into turn-of-the-century America and the rising tide of modernity.

Hulu viewers will not see The Devil in the White City on the streaming service after all. Plans for the limited series have been cancelled, per Deadline.
Based on the book by Erik Larson, the story is set in 1893 Chicago and tells the true tale of the conflict between two brilliant men -- Daniel H. Burnham, the brilliant architect behind the legendary 1893 World's Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, the infamous serial killer who used the fair to lure victims to their death.

There was great rejoicing from Keanu Reeves’ fans when Hulu announced the “John Wick” star had signed on to star in “The Devil in the White City”, a limited series from producers Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio that would have been Reeves’ first major television role, with Todd Field (“TÁR”) on board to direct.
In October 2022, Field exited. This was followed by Reeves dropping out of the project, in which he would have played Daniel H. Burnham, described in the series’ logline as “a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair,” who found himself in the orbit of Dr. H. H. Holmes, described as “America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious ‘Murder Castle’ built in the Fair’s shadow.”

"Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir this show's blood." Hulu has decided to walk away from "Devil in the White City" -- the series adaptation of Erik Larson's 2003 non-fiction historical novel -- after developing it with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio for over two-and-a-half years. Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter all brought word of the new development at the same time. Their sources say that the show's producers, ABC Signature and Paramount Television Studios, are still committed to the project and will be shopping "Devil in the White City" around to other platforms, in the hopes of finding a new home. But as of now, the series is more or less dead.
According to THR, Jude Law ("Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore") and Jeremy Allen White ("The Bear") were last in talks to star in "Devil in the White City," with Matt Ross...

Martin Scorsee and Leonardo DiCaprio’s adaptation of “The Devil in the White City,” based on Erik Larson’s 2003 book about the notorious real-life 19th-century serial killer, is no longer moving forward at Hulu, multiple sources reported on Monday.
It’s the latest no-go for the project in a nearly 20-year attempt to bring it to the screen. The most recent version had Keanu Reeves set to star as visionary architect Daniel H. Burnham, but once “Tár” director Todd Field exited in October, so did Reeves.
No casting was announced for the title role of Dr. H. H. Holmes, who is considered America’s first modern serial killer. He slaughtered guests who were attending the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair in his diabolical “Murder Castle.” The horrific true story inspired a 2006 episode of “Supernatural.”

The Devil in the White City is officially leaving town: Hulu has scrapped the book adaptation that formerly had Keanu Reeves attached to star, our sister site Variety reports. There are plans, though, to shop the project to other outlets.
The series, based on the Erik Larson bestseller, was to tell “the story of Daniel H. An adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City has been in the works for over a decade. The most recent incarnation was set up at Hulu as a limited series, but after losing leading man Keanu Reeves (John Wick: Chapter 4) and director Todd Field (Tar) last year, it seems that the streaming service has scrapped The Devil in the White City.
The Devil in the White City tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, “a visionary architect who sets out to mark history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” that was built in the shadow of the Fair.” THR’s report states that producers had been nearing deals with Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Dumbledore) to star in the...

The series adaptation of “The Devil in the White City” is no longer moving forward at Hulu, Variety has learned.
The series had originally been ordered to series at the streamer in August 2022 after originally being put into development there in 2019. At the time it was ordered, Keanu Reeves was attached to star in one of the lead roles with Todd Field onboard to direct.
However, Variety exclusively reported that Field had dropped out of the show in October, with Reeves also exiting. According to sources, Reeves had signed on to the series due in part to Field’s involvement, but left the show once Field did.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, there are plans to shop the project to other outlets.

The devil was in the details, apparently: Hulu has decided not to move ahead with The Devil in the White City.
The long-gestating limited series was to tell the story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” built in the fair’s shadow.

One of Stephen King's newest stories is already set to get the big screen adaptation, as Deadline is reporting that the 2021 crime novel "Billy Summers" has been acquired by Warner Brothers, with J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot producing. This is a slight change of plans from the news that broke almost exactly a year ago, when the same outlet reported that Bad Robot was set to develop the book as a limited series.
Abrams isn't the only big name on board, as Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way is also producing, with Deadline speculating that DiCaprio himself may star while Abrams directs. Still, the project is in the early stages, and we know better than to put all our eggs in one basket when it comes to dream-casting DiCaprio in his producing projects after what happened to "The Devil in the White City."

Todd Field: Adam Sandler in ‘Punch-Drunk Love’ Is ‘One of the Great Screen Performances of All Time’
A Lydia Tár-Adam Sandler mash-up? Not quite.
Todd Field said that while he has been in casual talks with Adam Sandler about one day collaborating on a project, odds are it will not be a classic Sandler comedy. Instead, Field pointed to Sandler’s dramatic turn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love” as his personal favorite performance from the “Uncut Gems” actor. Anderson wrote the role for Sandler, and he earned a Golden Globe nomination.
“The first film of Adam’s I ever saw was Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Punch Drunk Love,'” Field said during the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “It floored me. It really is one of the great screen performances — for me — of all time, and obviously, the stuff he has done with the Safdies is amazing, and as you mentioned, the stuff he did with James L. Todd Field was working as an actor on Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut” when star Tom Cruise took him aside. Cruise looked Field in the eye and told the budding auteur that he would one day be a director. “He basically pushing me onto the fighter jet,” Field recalls to Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I said, ‘oh yeah, I went to film school.’ And he said, ‘no, no…you’re going to Direct.’ What are you going to do?”
That moment with the superstar had a profound effect on Field, who was then pursuing an acting career, with previous film credits that included “Radio Days” (1987) and “Sleep with Me” (1994).
Field, of course, did indeed eventually become a celebrated filmmaker. But 16 years have passed since his last film “Little Children” (2006) was released in theaters. Now, he’s back with his finest film yet, “Tár,” starring Cate Blanchett.

Back in July, we learned that the Duffer Brothers, the creators of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, will be executive producing a live-action series based on the Japanese manga and anime series Death Note for the streaming service. Halia Abdel-Meguid is set to write and executive produce “Death Note,” a manga adaptation being developed at Netflix. Todd Field’s widely acclaimed Oscar hopeful “TÁR” takes on a rarified world rarely explored in movies: classical music. In the drama now in limited release, Cate Blanchett plays the Egot-minted conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic who idolizes Leonard Bernstein and is now recording Gustav Mahler’s fifth symphony in his vein. Except, she’s now in freefall, thanks to a blizzard of accusations from protégés and peers alike.
The movie may be divisive for its morally ambiguous take on a public figure and self-styled genius who unravels amid #MeToo-worthy allegations — when she’s not seemingly grooming an ingenue, she’s stomping over them, such as Noémie Merlant’s up-and-coming violinist-turned-assistant Francesca. But the movie now has one especially coveted imprimatur: that of Yo-Yo Ma, Grammy-winning cellist.

The trouble continues for The Devil in the White City. The Erik Larson book had its rights purchased back in 2010 by Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio. Exclusive: A high-profile TV series project from Miramax Television based on Herbert Asbury’s 1927 non-fiction book The Gangs of New York is about to hit the premium/streaming marketplace. Oscar winner Martin Scorsese, who directed the 2002 feature adaptation of the book, is attached to executive produce the potential series and direct the first two episodes.
Details about the drama, from playwright/TV writer Brett Leonard (Shantaram), are sketchy but I hear this is a new take on the story with new characters that were not featured in the movie, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz.
Asbury’s book details the confrontations between rival gangs in New York in the mid- to late-1800s, prior to the domination of the Italian-American Mafia during Prohibition in the 1920s. That latter period was the subject of HBO’s drama Boardwalk Empire, which Scorsese executive produced and won an Emmy for directing the pilot episode.

It was just a few days ago when it was revealed that Keanu Reeves had exited Hulu’s series adaptation of The Devil in the White City, and now Variety has reported that director Todd Field has followed the actor out the door.
Todd Field was set to serve as director and executive producer of The Devil in the White City. It’s not clear why Field exited the project, but this now leaves Hulu searching for both a new director and a new star for the series. The Devil in the White City tells the story of Daniel H. It's looking a bit less likely that Hulu will be adapting Erik Larson's 2003 novel "The Devil in the White City," after all. Variety reports that the adaptation has lost its main director, Todd Field, mere days after Keanu Reeves left the project. What in tarnation is going on?
The answer to that question is still unknown. According to Variety's anonymous source, Hulu is now trying to recruit a new director for the buzzy series alongside a new lead actor. Reeves was slated to play Daniel H. Burnham, a real-life architect who gets caught up in the frantic energy of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair as a serial killer roams the nearby streets. Much like Field's sudden departure, it is unknown why the actor dropped out, although it is quite odd that both the lead and the show's director left the project around the same time.

After over a decade in development, it looked like Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese’s long-gestating television adaptation of Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City” was finally starting to take shape. The series, which had been in the works at Hulu since 2019, announced that Keanu Reeves was set to play legendary Chicago World’s Fair architect Daniel H. Burnham, with “TÁR” director Todd Field executive producing and directing all episodes.
But the project soon started falling apart, with Reeves exiting the series last week. Now, the project has been hit with another creative blow, as Variety first reported that Field has now dropped out as well. It would have marked the continuation of a triumphant comeback for Field, who has been receiving glowing reviews on the festival circuit for “TÁR,” his first feature film since 2006’s “Little Children.”

It would have marked the continuation of a triumphant comeback for Field, who has been receiving glowing reviews on the festival circuit for “TÁR,” his first feature film since 2006’s “Little Children.”

The long-gestating project was set to mark “The Matrix” star’s first major television role, as the infamous Dr. H. H. Holmes, considered to be the first modern American serial killer. Based on the bestseller by Erik Larson, “Devil in the White City” tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Holmes’ involvement in the Fair’s notorious “Murder Castle.”

"The Devil in the White City" seems to have lost its architect in what might be the worst TV news we've heard in weeks. According to Variety, Keanu Reeves has exited the long-gestating adaptation of Erik Larson's popular book, where he was set to play real-life Chicago World's Fair designer Daniel H. Burnham. His turn as the historic architect would have marked Reeves' first live-action major American TV role.
The adaptation of "The Devil in the White City" has been plagued by changes and interruptions since it first began its path to production in 2010. Back then, Leonardo DiCaprio acquired the film rights to the book with plans to play serial killer H.H. Holmes – whose own story parallels Burnhams as the two both make their mark around the same time – in a film adaptation of the material. In 2015, Martin Scorsese boarded the project with plans to direct, but in 2021, news...

Focus Features has released the latest trailer for Cate Blanchett’s latest, TÁR, directed by the great–and infrequent director–Todd Field.
TÁR “examines the changing nature of power, its impact and durability in our modern world.” Well, that’s awfully vague…In TÁR, Cate Blanchett stars as a renowned composer on the verge of completing what could be her masterpiece. As suggested in the trailer, her struggle with time as both a conductor and an aging woman prove to take a physical and psychological toll.
Cate Blanchett’s performance in Todd Field’s TÁR seems prime for an Oscar nomination. This wouldn’t be much of a surprise, considering Blanchett has seven nods and two wins already (for Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine). Director Todd Field, too, has a history of leading his performers to Oscar nominations.
That history, granted, is brief. Todd...

16 years have passed since “Little Children” hit theaters. Now, the world is finally getting another Todd Field movie. The writer-director is returning to the fall festival circuit — and (presumably) the Oscar race — this year with “TÁR,” a new project set against the highly competitive classical music scene in Germany. If “Little Children” and Field’s earlier “In The Bedroom” were any indication of the filmmaker’s modern sensibilities, cinephiles should be in for a real treat when his third feature opens this fall.
Cate Blanchett stars as the titular Lydia Tár, an accomplished orchestra conductor. Not much has been revealed about the film’s plot and the trailer provides precious few cryptic clues. According to the official synopsis from Focus Features, “TÁR” is “set in the international world of classical music, centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer/conductors and first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra.

The market for international shoots in the Czech Republic is “on the edge of a precipice,” says Vratislav Slajer, the head of the country’s main industry group, the Assn. of Audiovisual Producers.
Speaking to industry colleagues on Sunday at the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, Czech producers warned that they are witnessing the impending loss of more than a decade of progress in bringing in foreign shoots – and the prospect of witnessing billions going to other countries.
The Czech government suspended film production incentives this year, citing a spending crisis brought on by the need to rescue businesses hit by Covid losses and to accommodate over 300,000 war refugees from Ukraine.
But, says, Slajer, “It’s a false argument.”
Booming film productions would offer lots of jobs to Ukrainians, for one thing, he posits. “We can help solve the crisis – we can bring in more money.”

Exclusive: Chernin Entertainment has won the rights to Erik Larson‘s audiobook original, No One Goes Alone, with plans to adapt as a feature film.
No One Goes Alone follows pioneering psychologist William James, a prominent member of the Society for Psychical Research, as he leads a team of researchers to the remote Isle of Dorn in 1905 to investigate the cause of several mysterious disappearances, most notably a family of four who vanished without a trace after a weeklong holiday on the island. Was the cause rooted in the physical world, or were there forces more mysterious and sinister at work? The idyllic setting belies an undercurrent of danger and treachery, with raging storms and unnerving discoveries adding to a growing sense of menace. As increasingly unexplainable events unfold, members of the isolated party are unsure whether they can trust their own eyes, their instincts, one another — or even themselves.
