The Department of Defense declined to support the film, citing the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. The DoD objected to a 15-second superimposition at the trailing credits, disclosing three cast members had been awarded the Bronze Star during their military service and were gay when they received the awards.
Three cast members are Bronze Star recipients: Donald Irwin (Ret. Lt. Col., US Air Force), John Patrick McCaffrey (former Lt. US Army, Viet Nam), and William Smith (former Sgt., US Army, Iraq I) - all of whom were gay and serving when their medals were awarded.
Has been shown at over 50 mainstream film festivals.
From Black Maria Film Festival: "This is an impressive drama about a young soldier in a verterans hospital where he's being fitted for an artificial leg. In this highly accomplished and exceedingly well acted narrative played by actors who are real American soldiers, the battlefield flashback rings strikingly genuine. The surprise ending elevates this work above an obvious fictional work." Director's Choice award.
