I Hate Musical is one of a very short, straight-forward film, with a compressed but very real beginning, middle and end. It's a basic boy meets girl, boy and girl move in together but grow apart while girl pursues artistic ambitions (musical theater) and boy pursues financial gain (in order to secure their future); however, in standard-issue Hollywood fashion, they have been growing apart because he is most concerned about this security and hates musical and she feels less and less in common with him, especially when he so clearly loathes her most current play. She wishes things (read that as her guy) were different; this wish turns everything into a song - at least, everything that comes out of his mouth. You get this information in about the first quarter of the film, leaving the last 12 or so minutes for several musical numbers, including one really great scene in a car.

I'm not a big musical fan. I've never gone to see one theatrically and don't expect to do so ever. I probably wouldn't have seen this short if it did not appear as part of a program of shorts at the 2007 Outfest film festival in LA. However, this was charming, well made and very clever. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed an entire movie, but it certainly shows promise on the part of the filmmakers.
