Nice, no spin interview with Lauren Bacall, direct and unpretentious...
Doylenf16 September 2011
This is an enjoyable interview with Lauren Bacall that gets off to a good start with her tale of being discovered for TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, her surprise kiss from Humphrey Bogart during shooting of the film, and her subsequent surprise at how much of an impact her appearance in the film had at the film's first sneak preview in California when preview cards singled her out for stardom.

And then, of course, she goes on to tell Robert Osborne about her other films with Bogart, their subsequent marriage before filming DARK PASSAGE, and his love of sailing which meant spending every weekend on his yacht where he found his freedom and she found she got seasick easily.

A bit about his illness (which he almost never talked about), her involvement in work during his ill period by filming DESIGNING WOMAN, her first comedy, with Gregory Peck. Then, after his death, her return to New York and the theater for some stage work including the highly successful CACTUS FLOWER and APPLAUSE (her favorite theater role).

She reveals the surprising fact that she's really still insecure, something one would never guess, as Robert Osborne mentions, from her on screen persona as a strong female.

Very interesting chat, some interesting tidbits about fellow performers, and ending with Bacall calling Robert "a prince." You can see the mutual admiration between them is genuine.

Private Screenings: Lauren Bacall (2005)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Lauren Bacall sat down with host Robert Osborne for this installment of Turner Classic Movie's Private Screenings series. The first twenty-minutes of the movie deals with Bacall, her relationship with Humphrey Bogart and their films TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, THE BIG SLEEP, KEY LARGO and DARK PASSAGE. Fans of Bogart will certainly love this section as Bacall talks about how they met, the rules he laid down before marrying her and the final section of his life. Being a fan of Bogart you can help but love all of this stuff. Also talked about is her relationship with Frank Sinatra plus working with Kirk Douglas, Monroe and Gregory Peck among others. This is a really nice interview as Bacall shows some sides of her many might not have seen and that's vulnerability. Hearing how she isn't so sure of herself was rather amusing considering all the strong roles she played throughout her career.
