No Regrets
GirlAchromatism29 June 2007
The English title of this film is "No Regrets" and I have no regrets about seeing it.

The characters were honest and real and the plot was well developed. I cant comment on the acting as I don't speak Korean, but rather relied on subtitles, but I can say that the low budget of this film had no adverse effects on the quality at all.

The best part of this this film is that although the characters are gay, the film would have been equally cohesive and interesting if the cast were changed to male/female heterosexual roles.

I would recommend this film to any Indi film fan, GLBT film supporter and mainstream viewers alike. This is truly a film anyone could enjoy. Don't miss out!

A Good Gay Movie
lia0002718 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Well South Korea has made good progress in making gay movie since "the king and the clown (cast. lee jung ki). This "no regret" movie basically is a real life story of how poverty could make people's lives change dramatically.

A young orphanage (sung min) in his 20th tried to live on his life as good as he can but unfortunately he got fire from the factory where he had worked on by the CEO's son that accidentally fall in love with him when he bumped him before. Sung min became a gay prostitute and he changed from innocent silly-look guy became a masculine with good style of clothes. The CEO's son however wooed him even though sung min always rejected him, soon after they became a couple but life never that easy since the CEO's son had a fiancé and he had to choose between sung min and his family's fortune with condition to marry his fiancé. It is a happy ending gay movie even though the ending a bit blur and should be make longer.

The feeling of the actors especially the actor who was acted as a sung min is truly incredible, he could showed his emotion for the first time knowing what love and happiness is and also showed the anger and sadness of being left behind and being hurt by the person he loved at the 1st time. Not to mention I have to say that the director's job is splendid everything went well and touched my emotion still the movie is quite dark they should make it lighter (for the light) since I barely see anything when they were acted in the dark room. The sex scene is really good and full of emotion and I suppose it is not been easy for the actors to do it. This is the 1st movie that could really show a good gay sex scene differ with France, Japan, Chinese, Thailand gay movies.

Rentboy Triptych meets Romeo & Juliet
Havan_IronOak29 April 2011
Su-min is a poor country boy raised in an orphanage who goes to the big city and gets a job working in a factory in Seoul. He also does odd jobs to make ends meet and one night while working as a driver meets a man Jae-min who propositions him. Su-min soon discovers that the Jae-min is the son of the plant owner and that he's being laid-off. While the son attempts to save his job, Su-min rejects the offer and walks out.

Shortly thereafter he finds himself working in a boydello and the rich man has tracked him down. Also working at the boydello is a jaded Hustler named Jung-tae who's only working where he is so that he can make a lot of cash to spend on his girlfriend. Later we meet another young country orphan who comes to work at the boydello and wins the affections of a local policeman.

With the story of how this life changes these three young men as a backdrop we see the relationship between Su-min and Jae-min grow from a stalker relationship to something more only to have Jae-min's parents intercede with plans of their own.

The subtitling could be better and some of the plot developments seemed to be somewhat abrupt, (at least to an occidental mind) but overall the film is watchable and better than most Korean gay films that I've seen. Some additional character development would have helped as well.

Haunting & unforgettable
derekmcgovern28 April 2007
I recently purchased this film from dvdfromkorea.com & I have no hesitation in saying that it's one of the best films to have come out of South Korea in the last few years - and certainly the most memorable gay-themed Korean movie. It's also proof that a miniscule budget (of reportedly just US$100,000!) needn't compromise artistic standards. The acting is wonderful (including the superbly talented Lee Young Hoon, who is simply heartbreaking), and Leesong Hee-il's script and direction are top-notch - all the more remarkable when one considers that this was the first feature-length film for both men. Yes, the film does take an unexpected narrative shift toward the end - one that may strike some first-time viewers as implausible - but subsequent viewings should enhance one's understanding of the reasons for this change. And while it's also true that the English subtitles could have been better, I certainly had no difficulty following them.

A great film - and one that I've returned to many times. I can't wait to see what the very gifted Leesong Hee-il comes up with next.

"Once there was a shy man who fell in love with a poor man........
arizona-philm-phan27 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
.........but the poor man wouldn't accept the shy man's heart." {this parable-like utterance is the lead-in to a love scene you won't want to miss}.

Opposites in life, they meet, they fight, they fall tumultuously in love (well, not so easily as all that). One (Jae-Min), is the wealthy and well educated son of a big industrialist........the other (Su-Min---the lead we follow in this tale) is a just-in-from-the-country, young man---an orphan who is wise from life's hard knocks (yeah, yeah, it's clichéd.....but how do you avoid that in these sorts of films?). From the beginning, our unhappy, has-it-all-in-life second lead (who's engaged and on the verge of marriage) falls hard, and it's through his persistent pursuit that lead character, Su-Min, finally overcomes his reluctance involving the several differences between them and accepts the reality of their love. What follows is one of gay filmdom's better love scenes. As one might expect, all that comes along is not smooth sailing. Through misunderstandings, both lovers pass the very brink of near-death, itself, before a resolution is reached.

PS--I should point out that the original Korean DVD release (Region 3) contained very, very poorly done translation to English subtitling. One can only hope that TLA Video's upcoming Region 2 release (available through Amazon.com United Kingdom) will have more correct translations.

Meh- too long and confusing, but OK
seronjaa-797-3131244 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if it was because of the subtitles or the story is just weird- but I can't see how these guys fell in love with each other. It's a weird gay version of Pretty Woman. I think the dialogues could have been written better. One guy is a stalker and falls in love with the other for no reason, like it was love at first sight and the other hates him for no reason and then they're magically in love and what to say about the end?! I can't imagine something like that being romantic. It's not just a small mistake where you can say- I'm sorry and move on. I liked the actors and the atmosphere in the movie, the story itself isn't that bad but it's still weird. The movie was for me like talking to one of those people, you can't really talk with so you try but never come to common ground.

Gave me "the goosebump experience"
laweat8 July 2007
This movie gave me one of those very rare and difficult to describe experiences, where I was completely riveted during the film, then literally ecstatic afterward thanks to the artistic brilliance on display here. I saw it at the San Francisco Frameline film festival 6/07. Maybe my experience was personal, and maybe I just enjoyed the movie more than anyone in the audience that night, I really can't say. But wow! I wanted to jump for joy when it was over. So unique, inventive, fascinating, unexpected, beautifully acted (beautiful in all senses of the word), and with direction so insanely brilliant it was a gift to this movie lover. There are some great films coming out of S. Korea; this is one. See it if you can.

strange. not wonderful, but OK
citronellaa7 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Well this film outlines conservative culture in South Korea that I have heard of from a South Korean. Homosexuality is not widely accepted, men are expected to marry.

The film has a kind of strange and dark nature, at times. There is a death, almost a murder, and of course, prostitution. We see the desperation of a man who feels he is not worthy due to his lack of education, and simple rural background, fall into a prostitution ring for money.

A man from his previous non-prostitution workplace takes a liking for him, but eventually follows suit, giving into his parents demands - who he is financially dependent on - to marry a lady. I found this disappointing, as the two main characters were getting on well. But by the time he changes his mind, his lover already has other, very twisted plans, and is accompanied by an equally mentally troubled man to fulfill them. Thankfully at least, the plan is not completed.

Overall I found this film too dark a storyline, cold in behavior, and at times the acting seemed stunted, in ways.

Brilliant gay-themed drama - superb performances, direction
bbmtwist9 April 2009
I was very surprised at the quality of this film. Script, direction and performances were superb. It is a gritty, often violent romance between two young men of different classes and the love that almost destroys them.

Su-Min is an 18 year old orphan who comes to the city of Seoul, Korea to find work so that he can put himself through college and gain an education. He works at a variety of jobs, one of which is a car service. Here he meets the tortured Jae-Min Song, a wealthy closeted young man, who is trapped by his parents into a soon to be heterosexual wedding.

Jae-Min falls hard for Su-Min, who rejects him because of his contempt for the rich and careless. When Su-Min loses his jobs, he turns to a life of prostitution in an all-male brothel, where Jae-Min tracks him down as a client, only further gaining Su-Min's contempt.

It is Jae-Min's true love and constant pursuit of Su-Min that finally wins him over. The jaded Su-Min allows himself to return the love, but the road to happiness is paved with many pitfalls, all arising out of the class hatred and opposite backgrounds of the two protagonists.

The film's first half occurs almost always at night in murky and oftentimes unpleasant locations. When love blossoms it is all sunlight playing over naked bodies. Then night falls once again.

The script is very believable in depicting the conflicts of the main characters, although it has some plot continuity problems at times. The subtitles are poorly written and spelled, but one can grasp what is happening at all times.

Both Lee Young-hoon as Su-Min and Kim Nam-gil as Jae-Min turn in extraordinary emotional performances - every nuance from elation to grief is superbly expressed. Director-writer Leesong Hee-il in his first feature has the firm control over every detail of a veteran film director and does an astonishing job here.

This is the best gay-themed film to come out of Asia and the Pacific Islands thus far and is close to masterpiece status. One of the great film experiences for gay audiences.

Romantic
nomodusproject31 March 2020
An orphan's love story with a son of rich businessman. This is not unusual, but I like the character of su-min, he is very natural as a straight-acting gay guy. The depiction of the sea landscape is also very representative of the story. And when the story was almost slided by a korean twist of thriller, i held my breath. Then it turns out ok. Well, I was hoping something in between of suspense and happy-ending drama, though.

Regretful Title
thesar-26 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah, well, I definitely had regrets about giving up my Saturday night watching this strange little, yet very long, movie. Apparently neither did the main character for stealing two hours of my life. Here's the epitome of the antihero in 'No Regrets.' We have this jerk, so messed up, so wandering, so selfish, aimless and unlikable that it was extremely hard to get past the attraction a highly favored businessman's up-and-coming son, Jaemin, unless it was just that: physical attraction. He claims otherwise, that it's love. But after watching this, it's like loving Charles Manson because you dig the beard. (Alright, he's not that bad, but still no real redeemable characteristics.) I could never get past the reason Jaemin endless stalks Sumin. It was never shown, just told, that Jaemin loves Sumin. Perhaps it's a culture thing that flew over my head: crazy/stalking = mad love over in Seoul. It has to be, because a little more than half the movie is one stalking the other and the last part is stalking back and forth to the point I thought this was turning into a screwball comedy. I was waiting for a tiger named "baby" to make an appearance. Okay, so Sumin works two jobs while going to school, so far so good on someone trying to better themselves. But after his first taste of his stalker's attraction, he gives up his day job for some kind of prostitution ring. What? OK, well, as previously mentioned, the obsession doesn't stop due to the job/career change and if you throw in a bunch of other very angry characters you get one messed up movie where unbelievable occurrences just seem to happen without buildup. Basic movie, not 100% terrible, but you can do better with foreign gay-themed movies.

Universals: Common Denominators in Life and Love
gradyharp13 May 2009
NO REGRET (HUHWIHAJI ANHA) is an impressive film from Korea, especially in that it is the first venture for writer/director Hee-il Leesong who gives evidence of not only a his ability to create a film that examines life in Korea in a verismo style, but also knows how to cast and direct a crew of actors in a polished manner. He is most assuredly a new artist to watch.

NO REGRET takes many chances with the story of Korean orphans growing to the age of self- sufficiency without the guidance of parents, fending out a life with the sole support of their fellow orphans. The boys in this story come from the country with little exposure to the city life of Seoul and the tough choices that must be made to survive. The other side of the story reflects the wealthy young men who come from homes burdened with high expectations and preordained 'lives' of inheriting the family business, marrying the right girl, continuing the level of 'sophistication' to which they were born. NO REGRET places a member of each of these disparate groups together and the impact of opposite backgrounds is the thread that weaves so well through this love story.

Lee Su-min (the remarkably gifted newcomer Young-hoon Lee) is the orphan who works at menial jobs until he finds a source of good money as a rent boy in a company called XLarge. Su-min adapts well as he is apparently comfortable with his sexuality: his fellow ex-orphans who work at XLarge present the gamut of types that find prostitution monetarily if not emotionally rewarding. At a chance encounter Su-Min meets Song Jae-min (Nam-gil Kim) and while the attraction is one sided at first, Jae-min is bound by family expectations to marry and take over the family business and has not come to grips with his sexuality. Fear and recognition of class differences keeps Su-min from responding to the near stalking Jae- min, but eventually the attraction blossoms and differences seem to disappear. The two young men have found love, but Jae-min must cope with the expectations of his family - the results being devastating to both men in different ways. How the relationship works through this rocky road is the essence of the film and to discuss the ending would be to destroy the impact of the film.

Every aspect of this film - writing, directing, acting, lighting, music, editing - is first rate. No one who sees this film will be able to escape the impact of the characterization by Young- hoon Lee: his screen presence is magnetic and his range of acting is solid. He definitely is a rising star. As for writer/director Hee-il Leesong, here is a man who not only knows the art of story telling but also the sensitive insight as to the parameters of both economy and exposition when each element of the story calls. Highly recommended. Grady Harp

Finally out on DVD - a must see!
penncare6 April 2009
I saw this movie at PIGLFF (Philadelphia film festival). It was an incredible movie and I am so glad that it finally made it to DVD. It is one of the best GLBT Asian films to come out in the past 5 years. I judge a movie on whether it is worth paying full price/matinée/Netflix/"can't give it away" and this movie is definitely worth paying full price to watch. Some may comment it is over the top but American viewers have to remember that Asian sensibilities and their respective story lines are different. This movie is so worth watching and enjoying. I will admit the movie is a bit slow in parts but the overall product is highly satisfying. The actors do an amazing job especially the main protagonist, Lee Su-Min (played by the very cute Lee Young-Hoon). To get the full effect of this movie or any sub-titled movie, it is worth watching twice to capture anything that you miss. You won't be disappointed in watching this!

Stunning
iamintampa15 April 2012
I just finished watching this movie and I don't have words to summarize the emotion it places on you, the roller coaster ride of ups and downs and twists. I have never seen anything like this movie. The last 30 minutes of this film is unlike anything I have ever seen or experienced in a movie in my entire life. The visuals of the last 30 minutes -- I've never seen anything like that -- I've never had that kind of emotional experience from a film. There are so many scenes in this movie that stay with you, that pull at you, that are universal. You don't need to be gay, or Korean, or anything like the characters in this film because the emotions and experiences are universal, shared by everyone.

It is a must see. Do not doubt for a moment the payback you will receive from locating, buying and spending two hours with this movie.

If anyone connected to this movie's distribution or production is reading this -- please put out a high definition version of the DVD. Please!

Resisting and Then Giving In to Love
ekeby16 February 2020
The one negative review here (at this writing) says a lot more about the reviewer than it does the movie. Someone who complains about the lack of nudity in this film was looking for something completely different. The art of this superb film flew directly over his head.

This story of obsessive love and desire between two guys who are at opposite ends of the economic and social scale is haunting and beautiful. I watched it. I thought about it for an hour or so. Then I had to watch it again to make sure the film was as good as it seemed.

It is. This story is completely unpredictable. It's kind of amazing that you're pretty sure you know where the story is headed, and then it takes a turn that knocks the wind out of you.

This is a first rate production--acting, script, cinematography, everything. I think this is going to bump something off my top ten gay-themed film list. But I will watch again to make sure. That's how watchable it is.

For me, this film depicts a time and place and circumstances that I am more than willing to get lost in.

wonderful entertainment
barrie-729-6118063 July 2013
really moving and endearing story of a love that seems doomed from the beginning, terrific acting especially by Young Hoon Lee who brings beauty and charisma to this demanding role. I watched this with open eyes which turn many times to eyes of tears, the film has twist and turns and a very surprising end, the gay interest is handled with compassion and skill. If you want a film to entertain and flood your emotions, watch this film. I targeted this film because of the content but was amazed how easy it was to be emotionally involved with the lead characters, filmed in a professional way with great effort taken to run the emotions of the film and the prejudices of society and the families involved, I saw no downside for this movie.

Stupid, grossly overwrought and tiresome soap opera
jm1070118 November 2012
I've been trying to think if I've ever seen a stupider and more annoying movie than this one. I'm sure I must have, but I can't remember any right now. I often disagree with other reviewers, but I can't remember another movie that got almost universally good reviews that I absolutely hated. I kept expecting it to get better, but it just kept getting worse.

Both leads, even the orphaned hustler - actually, everybody in this stupid movie - they're ALL selfish, arrogant, unattractive, manipulative people, expecting everybody else to bend under the pressure of their relentless, selfish demands - without EVER showing ANY sign of ANYTHING the least bit attractive to make such a surrender desirable.

If this were meant as a clinical study in extreme, unrelenting human dysfunctionality and co-dependence, I might have been able to stand it - just barely - but romance? PASSION? What movie did these people see? Not the one I saw. Not the mindless, petty, self-indulgent, tantrum-filled, grossly overwrought, hand-wringing, tear-jerking, IDIOTIC soap opera I just spent almost two hours with.

"Prepare to be captured and enthralled for every minute, beginning to end." Well... I was prepared, but I was not ever, not for one second, captured (unless being held hostage counts) or enthralled, or even mildly interested. And "Strong sexual content"? "Nudity"? WHAT nudity? I didn't see any, unless a shirtless man smoking a cigarette merits an adults-only rating now. What a profoundly disappointing and irritating afternoon this has been. This is the worst movie I've seen in ages, if not ever.
